SUPERMARKET WORKERS UNION REP ON TALK RADIO --- Illegal aliens don't drive down our members' wages
Brian Whitman, KABC in Los Angeles | 11-30-03 | dfu

Posted on 11/30/2003 7:11:50 PM PST by doug from upland

I think liberal talk show host Brian Whitman was just as surprised as was I. Although a liberal, Brian is a pretty stand up guy. We actually agree on more things than I thought we did when I first heard him. He is a great supporter of our troops and has avoided bashing the commander in chief during time of war. He, of course, has many disagreements with the president, but I have not heard him make any statements that give aid and comfort to the enemy.

For the 6:00 pm hour of his show on KABC in Los Angeles, Brian had on a union thug who represents the picketing super market workers.

Brian asked him about the problem of wages being held down by a flood of illegal aliens. With what I presume was a straight face, the guy said that illegal aliens have not caused wages to be held down. Rather, the union has raised the wages of all workers. He finished with some blather about jobs Americas would not take. Yadda yadda yadda.

The comment was so preposterous, that I wonder where to really begin. Mr. Union Thug apparently does not understand basic Econ 101 and the concept of supply and demand. In this case, it is the demand for labor.

If there were a million few illegal aliens in L.A., would grass not get cut? Would crops not be picked? Were children not be babysat? Of course they would. For those workers who want to do those jobs, their wages would increase. In some cases, they may increase dramatically. Those not working would suddenly be in demand. At some wage scale, they would take those jobs.

Let's hope Brian has the union thug back to debate his preposterous and self-serving statement.

I heard the first half hour of this. Notice how he (and Whitman) ignored the comments about the nastiness of the strikers to shoppers.

The guy really did confirm the image of the union thug in his demeanor and attitude.

And of course he is getting paid plenty while he has all these working class people go out on strike over a few dollars. They've already lost more in wages probably than they'd ever have lost with the agreement the union bosses refused.

One of the replacement workers at Ralphs told me that the customers are coming in and saying very nasty things to them about the replacement workers taking the union members' jobs! Weird!

Quite honestly, Doug, a lot less people would have housekeepers who do double duty as babysitters, and gardeners-- because not many people have such help in New England, for example, where there isn't a steady flow of illegals. But so what if more people mow their own lawns around here? Seriously.

The problem with the nuts I saw sitting around with their signs in front of the Pavillions in BH is that the union is basically ruining the cushy set up they have had and they don't even know it. There are currently some ex-cons, etc, working at the Ralphs I go to and I think they are very friendly and helpful and glad they are being given a chance. If it weren't for the Teamsters withholding deliveries, I think it would be pretty much business as usual. Sorry, bag boys and cashiers, you are replaceable.

Lawn mowing used to be done almost exclusively in my old neighborhoods by 12 - 16 year old kids who couldn't get jobs because they were too young.

I think you've nailed it. The union bosses are using them and the workers are the ones losing money and who will probably be out of a job.

Well, of course the aliens aren't holding down his members' wages. They're doing a bang-up job of that for themselves right now.

As a kid, I cut grass every week for several people. Every week I was able to buy a new golf club. Hard work really does teach valuable lessons. I still cut my own grass.

I was one of those kids. Also, I was a cashier in high school. All the afternoon cashiers and bag boys were high school kids. Minimum wage, no benefits. We didn't even know the word "benefits." I can imagine Mr. Brough, the manager getting on the supermarket loud speaker and laughing, "One of my cashiers just asked about the health plan! HA HA HA! Kids these days!"

It's fun to watch the Rats scramble when their special interests conflict. Labor vs. Environmentalist, Gay Rights vs. Union Good ol boys, Illegal Aliens vs. Labor, African Americans vs Jews, Hispanics vs. Abortionists.
