Bush's Ohio Valley Why has he stopped campaigning here? By Chris Suellentrop Posted Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at 1:37 PM PT
Could he win without Ohio? Maybe.
COLUMBUS, OhioWhite House press secretary Scott McClellan wandered into the press cabin on Air Force One this week to let the media know where President Bush would be campaigning. On Thursday, Pennsylvania. On Friday, Pennsylvania and Florida. On Saturday, Florida. Those are two of the presidential campaign's "Big Three" states, which nearly everyone assumes will decide the election. The glaring omission: Ohio.
"Why aren't we going to Ohio? The president hasn't been there in several weeks," a reporter asked McClellan after the plane landed. Oops, the president will head to Canton on Friday, McClellan said. "I think I forgot to mention Ohio."
McClellan's lapse is understandable. Bush seems to have forgotten about Ohio, too. "The Bush campaign is confident it can win the state; as if to prove its comfort level, today marks 14 days since the Republican president last set foot in Ohio," Cleveland's Plain Dealer wrote this past Saturday. By the time Bush arrives in Canton tomorrow, he'll have gone 19 days without campaigning in the Buckeye State. His last stop here was in Cuyahoga Falls on Oct. 2.
Frikin liberals!!!
Dont fret. I'll be traveling down there tomorrow. I'll straighten this out.
ill be there in a few days myself on leave....
and I think a look at the polls would show that there is no reason to give up on Ohio....
I heard that talked about on Fox last night....and they said the BUSH Campaign doesnt know what this is all about that they are very much in Ohio and will not give up...
pay no attention to the swings in NM, MI, IA, WI, MN and PA.
grasping at straws......
The dems are getting desperate. Kerry is losing at least 3 Gore states right now that I can think of...is very very close to losing in 2 others....
Slate is as reliable as DEBKA.
I got the Ohio Valley right here:
Friday, October 22, 2004
Several weeks ago, John Kerry came to Canton. He needed help to support his election to become president. A member of his staff contacted a local grieving mother of a Stark County hero who gave his life for what he believed in.
The staff member asked her to come and speak at the rally. This young hero believed in God, truth, freedom and liberty. What more great qualities could an excellent soldier and son have?
After being contacted by phone, this fine, moral mother, having the same standards as her son, found out she was being selected to support John Kerry, as she is a registered Democrat.
She responded that she and her husband would appear at the rally but she would like to ask John Kerry a question. It could be in private or public. If done in private, she would not reveal his answer to the news media. She said she would even sign a statement not to reveal the answer.
The question was: Mr. Kerry, why did you vote against the $87 billion for the equipment for our troops?
The Kerry campaign, after hearing this, told this mother she wasnt needed.
A few weeks later, President Bush came to Canton asking to meet with the families of the three Stark County fallen heroes. President Bush ex- pressed his sorrow, love and gratitude to these families.
The family I am writing about is the Jesse Buryj family. They are close friends of my wife and me so close that Peggy and Steve Buryj and we are one military family.
Both families are voting for President Bush for the second time.
Please pray to God and support our troops.

Editors note: Peggy Buryj corroborated the letter writers account.
Yeah....
almost sounds like the Emperor's New Clothes or something doesnt it?
I disagree. I remember DEBKA being right once!
That also has to say something at how well Jim Robinson must have freerepublic.com optimized for the google bots...
yeah....
I find myself looking at what my enemies are saying these days (i.e. Slate, DU, CNN, etc).....
heh heh
glad I could help LOL
Wow....
I think the Democrats are in denial that any Ohio Democrats are voting for W....isnt that going to bite them in the butt or what?
He would like to be accepted at Ohio Wesleyan University - but he hasn't been to Ohio since March. Other standout Lacrosse Face-off Middies have campaigned against him to earn one of the coveted few admissions/playing spots.
(Son) has sent numerous letters and other documents to the OWU campus on a regular basis; communicated with the voters in the Admissions Office and Athletic Department by telephone and email nearly every week; met "representives of the student Press" in person (they accompanied a scouting trip here); and sent hours of video taped "highlights" to the Lacrosse Coach.
Son plans an on-campus visit and further interviews later this week during the tradional fall "Senior College Trip" break.
Mid-Term grade reports show (son) edged up from 23rd to 17th in the class of 432 students
Recent polls in the Indoor Lacrosse League here suggest (Son) is favored 51%/47% to win the 'Hardball' trophy, with 2% undecided. Winning this trophy would add 20 points to the OWU Admissions and Athletic weighting system.
Application for Admission to OWU is due Monday, Nov. 1, 2004
By the way - she's not THAT hot? You think? Maybe the pic doesn't do her justice. The female newsperson I last had a crush on was Sumi or Suni (something-or-another, can't remeber the last name right now) who actually does morning CNN with Bill hemmer now...she used to be on TechTV...man she was cute...
...but DEBKA is less biased!
By the way, I'm currently watching Stolen Honor on the web. Powerful is an understatement.
By the way, I'm currently watching Stolen Honor on the web. Powerful is an understatement.
wow....
I almost went to Capital University in Columbus to play baseball....but elbow issues and the cost (I couldnt afford it on my own and I dead set against having my parents pay it for me) stopped me.
Good luck to your son. I am sure he will make it.
Yeah she is.....the picture on the CNN website doenst do her justice to what she looks like now.
To me shes gorgeous and is just a notch below my wife :)
BS...unless kerry has given up on NJ as well...pure BS
Thats cool...
I didnt need to see it. Just from what my dad says (he is a Vietnam vet as my mother is) I dont need too know anymore than that.
The bastardo is going down....
Bush is going to be there in the final week, with the Governator.
"I'll be back"
I feel for the liberals down there.
I pity the fools . . uh . . whoops. Wrong big scary guy.
Ohio is weird. The entire state in is deep depression over the Buckeye's 0-3 start in the Big 10..If they win this Saturday..look for W's pol numbers there to jump 5%..
I emailed the author of this article Chris Suellentrop the following:
Chris,
Bush hasn't visited Ohio in 20 days and it's tied!
Bush owns Ohio.
Nice try getting the dems revved and the Repubs bummed though. But we see through it.
Regards,
John
This was his response:
Actually, I didnt mean to exclude that possibility. But Bush seems to think the state has swung, one way or the other.
----
"didn't mean to exclude that possibilty?" THis is Slate propaganda pure and simple. They want to demoralize us and are risking their (IMHO) good reputation to do so. I'm comfortable calling them reputable because they are openly left.
HERE WAS MY RESPONSE:
Chris,
Just heard that Bush plans to hit all 12 media markets in Ohio before 11-2-04 and Rasmussen's 7 day has Bush up 50-46 in Ohio.
Just saw Mickey on CNBC spreading this ridiculous rumor that Bush has given up in that state.
Come on, we know Slate wants Kerry to win, but this propaganda has to stop. You guys have a reputation to uphold, which in this conservatives opinion is a good one.
And let me repeat: Bush spent 20 days out of Ohio and he's at worst a point down. Kerry has lived there and that's the best he can do?
That's the story in Ohio.
Have a good weekend.
-----
Hopefully they will get it together. It's one thing to be leftists. It's another to be propagandists.
It is total BS...
more or less any state that is within 5 %...which both NJ and Ohio fall into, has not been given up on by either candidate...
Welcome Home Mike! Enjoy your stay, thanks for your service, and God bless you and your loved ones!
I'm not worried at all.
I think Ohio is a consistent 3% lead for W...all the polls that have him down have more Democrats than Republicans polled...
and I am sure a good portion of those Democrats are the ultra liberal types in Cincy, Columbus and Cleveland, not the conservative ones in the outlying areas that also vote....
I'm in Ohio and I think I know why - there is so much voter fraud. It is awful here and there is just so much that can be done. College students have registered in mulitiple places. We have registrations larger than the census count of some precincts. Vote reminder cards for new and old voters are being returned at a rate as high as 9% because the addresses are ficticious. Some people are finding out when they check their mailboxes that there are ficticious voters registered at their addresses. It is really awful here. Perhaps Bush's team is concentrating on states where the fraud is not so prevalent and the vote will be honest. Bush can win Ohio with an honest vote, but with the fraud - I dunno. PS - Mike if you are in Iraq - God bless you!
Thank you!!!
I am soo glad to be getting out of here!!
I've heard the theory that Bush's last minute visit to Ohio with Arnold will tip the balance. This sounds to me like a "hail Mary" move by a campaign that believes they're behind (in Ohio) and have to resort to a gimmick.
Any thoughts?
Hi, Mike in Iraq!
Are you still there?
If so. Give my regards to the Military! I pray for you folks several times a day! You are to be honored for your good deeds!
Just wanted to tell you!
God Bless our Military!
God Bless George W. Bush!
I dont know...anything over about 1/2% will get noticed...
I figure that if the President goes to bed on the 1st with a 3% or more lead in most polls, he will win by at least 2%....
I think that since Ohio is THE swing state, President Bush will be there every day in the last 3-4 days before the election. Kerry will have to be in other states that he has to try to hold on to. He won't be able to be in Ohio. President Bush will have 100% of the attention of the Ohio voters and he will win the state. Just another rope-a-dope by Rove, Inc. :>)
To me it means he is bringing in his closer.....to use a baseball term....remember W was an owner (a good one too) and I would bet that he is thinking of it in those terms....
I am here for one more day and then its time for my leave :)
Take it to the bank. I'm in the Republican Party and the President will win Ohio without question. Just to give you a hint the republicans have out registered the democrats in the last year by over 25,000 in this state. It's a done deal Bush will win. The breakdown further indicates that Kerry will not have a big enough lead coming out of Cleveland area while Hamilton County is very strong for the President in the southwestern part of the state. The Columbus area even looks good for Bush. You wonder why Kerry has spent a week in Ohio? He's trying to turn this state but then he's losing states that Gore won in 2000. This campaign is slipping away from the democrats and Kerry.
If the fraud is that extensive, the Bush campaign and election officials will take note.
Are you getting to come home?????
I know you will be soooo glad! God bless you!
They are coming back because Ohio is important. But, there are lots of states to focus on. That is why they have not been in Ohio lately....since before it was all Ohio all the time. They will go back for another all Ohio all the time swing.
I will be loving it believe me....
yes I am going to get home sometime around next Thursday....
I know you will be!
God Bless you and your family. I am sure they have great plans for your time with them!
Are you going to be able to vote while home? And will you be home for the "after the election" stuff that's been promised?
Or do you just ignore politics while home on leave?
-----------------------------------------------------------
ABC's The Note drew up this scenario earlier in the week: Kerry wins Ohio and Pennsylvania, but Bush wins the presidency by carrying Florida, Wisconsin, and two out of three from Iowa, Nevada, and New Mexico. Maybe we should start calling Wisconsin, Iowa, Nevada, and New Mexico the "Little Four." Or maybe the Big Three should annex Iowa and Wisconsin and become the Big Five. The electoral scorecard from Slate's William Saletan estimates that if the election were held today, Bush would win the presidency while losing Ohio by picking up both Iowa and Wisconsin (and holding Nevada).
Lots of Democrats took heart when the blogger Mystery Pollster declared that Bush was losing Ohio. But Ohio isn't this year's Florida, the one state Bush can't do without. It looks like Florida still is.
Bush hasn't campaigned in France either. So what?
O..H..
I am an BUCKEYE alumnus ...
... I wept quietly.
So I redirected my abundant effervescent personality, and COMMITTED MYSELF TO DO EVERYTHING I CAN to re-elect my Congressman and President Bush!!
(and I live in Los Angeles County -- and I can defeat DEMON-RATS with my weak hand ...)
