Iowa Senator Tom Harkin has called for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, saying it's the only solution after recent religious violence in that nation.
Harkin's comments place him among the first members of Congress to publicly state that the war in Iraq has become a fight between Muslim factions.
The criticism follows a CBS poll last week that showed 65 percent of respondents disapproved of President Bush's handling of the war, his worst marks since the war started three years ago.
A White House spokesman says retreat before victory would be reckless.

Zarqawi wins support from another US Senator.
Harkin is just another jerk who blows in the wind depending on what the polls are.
They are so anxious to turn it into another Viet Nam. Cut and run is all they know.
Lots of chickens in Iowa, and Tom's king of the barnyard.
Harkin's father should have pulled out.
Zarqawi has been a thousand times more effective winning the public opinion war in the US with the help of the MSM then he has been in winning the war in Iraq.
This guy is like a man with a tide table ordering the sea to recede. We *are* going to be reducing the number of troops in Iraq pretty dramatically before the year ends. That is because the Iraqi army will be taking over defense of their own country. So by demanding that the sea go back when the tide is ebbing, it will look like he actually got something done.
Harkin? Another Dimocratic no-name trying to get people to remember who he is.
It isnt that Zarkawi wins their support, Its that they dont have the courage to go against the polls.
Doing whats right isnt always the easiest way to get re-elected. Sometimes the easiest way is to go along to get along. The Senate isnt noted for courage.
I have a very hard time with people, especially Government People, who is suppost to know more than the American People in this situation, who makes these statements.
Where was this idiot on the morning of Sept. 11? There is more to Politics in America than putting your finger up in the air to see which way the wind is blowing...
They don't seem to care, its all about winning another 4-6 years in their little nests they have built for themselves on our money...
This is one of the MANY reasons I feel term limits should be passed...it would, in my opinion anyway, make them do what WE want them to do, and not what THEY want to do on our money....
Right on.
Please dont shoot but... Im getting slightly teed off at W. I am so tired of reading all the crap coming out of the mags, MSM, newspapers, books, blogs, etc. He has got to fight. What is he doing? Im perplexed.
Like durbin, harkin is a disgrace to the U.S. Senate.
Right on. Most of the heavy lifting, such as it is, is done in the House of Representatives. The senators are merely a bunch of preening, posturing, bloviating pouter pigeons.

That is brilliant.
I know moderate Dem friends who are furious at HArkin tonight. They are trying so hard to triangulate and act moderate while undermining Bush, but the fringe like HArkin keep cutting their legs out.
A definite candidate for the "Opportunist Party"....
Harkin has given quite a few speeches on the Senate floor calling President Bush and other Republicans "chicken hawks"...
You're right. And, good evening Txsleuth!
Going slow this evening. Household chores, and all that. LOL
If the situation is precarious, what good will pulling out the troops do? If we lose this thing, I will place the blame squarely on the Democrats.
And Harkin and his fellow Democrats are simply chickens.
All members of Congress have no balls except for the silk lining in their pockets. Not one is exempt. And don't forget it! Vote them all out of office, everyone of them. This problem is so rampant, no one sees it.
It's too bad Toms father didn't.
Hello....I have been busy with errands and chores all day as well...so I am just now catching up to the news.
Mostly done here. At the moment I'm watching Neil Gabler making a fool out of himself.... AGAIN. This idiot is only qualified to teach geography in a Colorado High School....
Will he pull out to Nebraska?
What a pitiful waste of skin!
BINGO!!!
I wonder if he and Kerry will try to set up a meeting with Al-Zarqawi....like they did with Noriega...
and like Kerry did with the Communist Vietnamese in Paris?
Whenever I see Harkin or even read his name I think about dancing to the Dean scream.
How about clammoring for Harkin to pull out of the Senate.
Isn't it time for Tom to make some more claims about himself shooting down MiGs over Vietnam again (later proven false)?

"and like Kerry did with the Communist Vietnamese in Paris?"
Or like Clinton did with the Communists in Moscow when he was a student.
It's gotta be about farm subsidies! Take out subsidies and close the borders and see you food prices go up by 50% overnight. But, we have no inflation.
He's not called "Cut and Run Tommy" for nothing. Cowards like Harkin and Murtha are a dime a dozen on the left.

Not THAT, the shirt!
That may leave a void,we should probably allow some to stay;)
Instead of blabbing why doesnt he introduce a bill to cut off the funding for the war .That perogative he has ,he is not the president so he can not order troops out himself ,so I believe he should shut the old pie hole.
God help us if the Dims take over and this moron gets even more power.
Tom Harkin has been the friend of America's enemies for the last 40 years.
He gave direct aid and comfort to North Vietnamese communists and every other communist regime thereafter.
So this should surprise no one.
By the way...in the lead up to the Iraq war, we had a support the troops rally on the steps of the Capitol in Des Moines. Thousands of patriotic Iowans showed up, but NONE of the Dem leadership did...not the Governor, and certainly not Tom Harkin...
No need. He hasn't had anything but a PO box in Iowa for many years...
The people of Iowa need to be called on the carpet for continually electing this sc*mbag.
Harkin needs to STFU and just keep his Senate seat warm until it's time for a permanent dirt nap.
That loser has absolutely no balls, no spine, and not a shred of common sense.
I remember so well the day that God decided that Paul Wellstone should keep his promise not to seek another term, and manifested that with an unexpected plane crash, and Harkin is crying and sobbing like a baby, he made Voinovich of Ohio look like freakin John Wayne, and Mrs. Harkin is murmuring into his ear loud enough for the microphones, "you can do it, Paul would want you to, blah-blah-blah" and Harkin pulls himself together long enough to blubber into the cameras about the tragedy (of course in his mind, the 'tragedy' was losing his closest Commie pal), it wasn't a parade, it was a damn pageant.
If Harkin is the best that Iowa can do, then I see another state in the Lower 48 that we might want to consider trading to Canada for say, Alberta?
LOL--Gabler never ceases to amaze me how far he will skew any story to end up President Bush's fault...
Just like the last story about the "Citizen of the World" award...the story had NO Bush connection...but, he had to force one at the end...which in essence had him pick Kofi Annen over President Bush and John Bolton...
He should offer to fly them out... afterall, he flew in Vietnam!
I don't think we can stop the occupation yet. But I wonder why we are in this position almost 3 years after the war.
The war went well. The occupation is a cluster****.
I really make an effort to be respectful to most of the Democrats, but Harkin makes it impossible. The man is a bald faced liar and political hack.
I think he's going down in '08.
The trick to beating him is to nominate a real conservative.
Chuck Grassley has held the other seat forever...repeatedly garnering over 70% of the vote.
Commie Tommy has been holding on by the skin of his teeth, barely winning with 50% of the electorate.
