Encouraging News [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
Even I, "raging Santorum enthusiast," wasn't too into that poll circulating earlier today that had Senator Santorum him down 4, for reasons I've mentioned.
But maybe that "4" wasn't insane. I'm told by a good, albeit Republican, source that Gov. Rendell's latest internals have Santorum only 5 behind.
I'm told he had Santorum at 9 on Friday and 17 three weeks ago.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, this race is in play. The innane analysis is that turnout means everything. But it couldn't be more true in the Keystone state. Conservatives in Pennsylvania can make a big difference tomorrow between winning and losing a leader.
TOPICS: Extended News; News/Current Events; Politics/Elections; US: Pennsylvania
KEYWORDS: congress; election; election2006; elections; gop; pennsylvania; polls; republican; republicans; ricksantorum; santorum; senate; vote; votegop
Santorum is known as a strong closer. Keystone poll had the race closing fast. Casey has been invisable. I only wish the gop pundits were talking this race up because it has closed fast.
If he is only 5 behind in rendell's poll that means it is even closer.
Hopefully conservatives aren't lulled to sleep by past polls.

"The innane analysis is that turnout means everything."
1. Its inane to spell that way.
2. What is so inane about that analysis? I think it happens to be true.
That said, I sure hope the Rick pulls this one out.....

The innane [sic] analysis is that turnout means everything.Um, I thought that was pretty common sense. The ground game might very well win us some key races tomorrow night.
To: jamesrichards
I wouldn't trust Casey enough to let him boil water. He is an unbelievably stupid man.

The Missus and I will be casting our votes for Rick tomorrow. We'll also be voting for a stand-up guy in the House - Todd Platts.

I think winning this race would make me happier than any other
To: jamesrichards
I wish I had Rick Santorum as my Senator, and I live in Georgia with two Republican senators.
Keystone conservatives, please get out and vote for Santorum . Take a neigbor with you. Take two.
Santorum is quite possibly the best senator in Washington.

We'll also be voting for a stand-up guy in the House - Todd Platts.Platts? You mean the guy who won his first primary by courting the Dem vote? The enthusiastic supporter of the Shays/Meehan/McCain/Feingold elimination of the 1st ammendment?
To: jamesrichards
Rendell????? He's not running against Santorum.
I think this race will be closer to 10 points than 4, I am afraid. I hope I'm wrong, but PA is in that chain of NE states that have gone more 'blue' and 'blue' the past 20 years...

Santorum is my senator and is the #1 reason my wife and I will be at the polls early tomorrow morning. Yes we would be there no matter, but we are very energized to step up and go to bat for Rick. He is one of the true conservatives and as such demands our vote. I can only hope that there are many others out there like us.

The polls have always been closer than the media has been transmitting. They're tightening now so they can claim that they were "close to right" when the actual numbers come in on election day.
Hold tight, Santorum friends. Rick's going to take it!

I know what you mean, and OH is joining that same bloc quickly. Those states may be permanently lost to liberalism. And look at that pathetic little VT -- no hope there for generations to come.

I wonder if Specter has been deliberately kept off the campaign trail this year -- since his presence might only serve to diminish support from Santorum's conservative base.

Hopefully conservatives aren't lulled to sleep by past polls. Win or lose, I despise voters that let a poll, or the news or anything else decide for them whether to vote.
If I lived in Hawaii and the Dem presidential candidate had already won 48 states, I'd still stand in line to vote.
Anyone that says "we're ahead in the polls so I don't need to vote" or "we're gonna lose, so there is no point in my voting" is an idiot and deserves the government they get.
In 2000 when the networks called it for Florida and supposedly Republicans walked away from the polls, if that really occurred, then those kinds of voters are flippin' morons. The media thinks they are stupid, and I find it hard to disagree.

I was under the impression that those were Kathryn's words.
I'm not sure what was meant, but I do happen to think the turnout of the conservative base will dictate tomorrow's results more than any other factor.

Am I the only one confused by this? "Who" should skip the "gov" job and run for President? Swann? Rendell? Santorum isn't running for Governor.
If Rick does lose, I'd like to see Rummy retire and Santorum become Secretary of Defense.

I'm pretty sure they're her words.
But anyhoo, the *important* thing is that the GOP ground game can put us over the top where needed. I think they can -- probably not everywhere there's a key race, but hopefully in enough places.

Newt was on Greta tonight saying the GOP turnout will make up for 2 to 7%. Hope he is right. He was talking about how "registered voters" means nothing and how repubs never do well on weekend polls - all things I've learned here on FR.

What happened to the 'strong closer'?????
We were led to believe that Santorum was within 5 points.
Casey won 59% to Santorum's 41%. Talk about a blowout!!! How do you explain the difference between expectation and reality?

No doubt about that. Who would have thought that the GOTV would exceed 2002 and 2004 and we would still get this result? Not me, that's for sure.
