The unscientific poll of more than 2,500 of the group's members found that 31 percent would vote for the former House Speaker if the 2008 Republican presidential nomination were held today. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani ranked second with 25 percent of the vote.

how the heck does rudy get 25%? i really just don't get it. this is a guy who's not only a social liberal, but has essentially no foreign policy experience. sure, he's a good hawk, but that doesn't mean he knows what the heck he's doing. all that leaves us with is...what, that he likes free markets? that he has this nebulous quality of "leadership"? the question is, where will he lead us?
Forget Rudy. Nothing conservative about a gun grabber.
"31 percent would vote for the former House Speaker if the 2008 Republican presidential nomination were held today. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani ranked second with 25 percent of the vote."
Newt & Rudy PING
#1 - He won't run.
#2 - Even if he did he has been demonized by the left so much that he probably couldn't win.
I'd like to forget Rudy too...and until now I've been figuring that his high poll numbers are the result of rank-and-file Republicans not understanding his positions well enough. But this straw poll was taken among an educated group of voters. That's what scares me.
They live in a dream world.
The Kerryites of 2004 pined for the 1960s.
The Gingrichers pine for the 1990s.
They seem to forget that Newts departure from the Speakership and from the House were anything but stellar.
They decry Hillary and her baggage while excusing Newt and his.
..and Duncan Hunter didn't even show up on the radar--doesn't line up with the good finish in S.C.
agree. I, too, like Newt. But, doubt he could win.
We sure have to work hard to avoid having the Dems take the White House in 2008.
Winning ticket would be Hunter/Gingrich!
Here's one more.
And here is the link to the full details from CPAC, posted by Mount Athos on another thread:
http://www.conservative.org/documents/3-07_CPAC_Straw_Poll.ppt
1st choice: Romney
In combined 1st & 2nd choice: Giuliani 34%.
It is interesting to note the comparison they also posted, in 2000 Bush was #1, Gary Bauer was 32.
You altered the title; this is a very different poll, not the CPAC.
Thanks for pointing it out, I thought I was clarifying it, but you are right, this is a different straw poll, not the CPAC, as I thought upon cursory reading
Could someone please correct this title.
Fred Thompson may run
Hunter/Thompson
I already sent a note to the Admin Mod.
It's about 9/11. Why don't people get that!
When a Saudi Prince offered NYC $10 million - Rudy told him where he could shove it.
That act touched a lot of people .. it was what they wanted to do and Rudy did it for them.
You may not understand why people are drawn to him but I can see why his actions after 9/11 are the key.
I saw a replay of Duncan Hunter's speech at CPAC on C-span last night.
There were only a handful of people in attendance...
THAT could explain why he didn't get voted for in the straw poll..
He got screwed in the "time of speech" lineup.
There is no upside to being the harbinger of bad news, but Hunter isn't going to show up on the radar anywhere when it counts.
If we're going to nominate someone who reflects the conservative values that most of us share at this forum, it's going to be someone who isn't an unknown.
That's simply a fact, and you or I are powerless to change that.
Stomping our feet and cussing about Rudy won't change that.
Telling people that they're traitors won't change that. That probably backfires, by the way.
Either someone like Fred Thompson or Newt Gingrich gets in the race, or you pick your poison with the frontrunners who actually show up on the radar.
That's just the way it is.
Demonizing, he can gethis, and also give i out.. if Hillary
is the opponent..there is enough on both sides so go
for the guy who thnks fast and has the comeback in his
head at all times....Go with Newt....JK
Another vote for Newt!
'Americans love a winner'
Speaking of Thompsons, wasnt Tommy Thompson cotemplating a run?
They also (incorrectly) announced that he would be speaking on Saturday, not Friday which probably eliminated a few folks.

I believe it was corrected some time later but the damage was already done.
Its a damn shame George Allen stepped in macaca
Yeah, I think he even has an exploratory committee. Maybe not. He's polling at about 0% at the moment, maybe less, so I'm not sure I'd focus much on him, either.
"But this straw poll was taken among an educated group of voters. "
Exactly.
THEY understand that it's critical that Republicans nominate someone WHO CAN BEAT HILLARY.
..I know you are not talking about me
But one thing is real--I will never support Giuliani under any circumstances.
As far as Duncan Hunter is concerned, Dog, let's see what happens through a couple of pre-primary debates--things could change.
Newt could jump in and change everything.
And there is another individual who I am not convinced is not running, who could come in and take it all--Dick Cheney...
NOBODY, except a handful of people at FR are interested in Duncan Hunter. He is UNELECTABLE.
NEWT GINGRICH (16,671): 42%
RUDY GIULIANI (12,953): 33%
MITT ROMNEY (4,572): 12%
JOHN MCCAIN (2,412): 6%
MIKE HUCKABEE (1,196): 3%
SAM BROWNBACK (1,056): 3%
CHUCK HEGEL (487): 1%
No idea why Dick Morris would exclude Duncan Hunter (and include a nothing like Hegel). But there it is.
L0L Its a funny thought eh?
Not at all, and I'm glad that was apparent.
I am sick, however, at the acrimony at this forum at the present time when a meaningful vote will not even be cast this year.
I don't know what to do about it, but I hate it.
Unless the White Knight arrives to save us, we appear willing to eat our own, maybe even anxious to do so. It's way too early to be having this battle. We don't know who the Rat nominee will be, but we have people, and you are included in this criticism, who are declaring that they'll never support a particular nominee, no matter what.
Let's have that debate when we're faced with a final decision. Until then, let's promote ideas and candidates in an effort to get the best nominee possible.
I don't follow this. Please elaborate.
Cheney could own the nomination in a heartbeat, although there would be people here who would loudly criticize his position on civil unions.
I'm not sure when we decided to demand perfection in any particular candidate. We've never gotten it before.
I love Ronald Reagan and literally cried during his funeral, but he cut and ran from Lebanon. Nobody is perfect.
I certainly would prefer Gingrich to the other so-called top three.
Dang..I didn't know that.
poor Hunter...he can't get a break.
McCain got MORE publicity about CPAC for NOT going..than Hunter got for showing up!!
While I agree with what you say about the Gipper and Lebanon, in fairness to Reagan, he had bigger fish to fry. He didn't want anything to interfere with his geo-strategic Grand Design (we win, they lose.) Reagan wanted to use radical islam as a cudgel to beat on the Soviets, in Afghanistan, and elsewhere. He wanted to destroy the epicenter of world communism, as he saw it, and would leave the issue of terrorism and radical islam to future Conservative Republican Administrations to tackle.
But open, reasonable, intelligent debate is a very good thing.
It has been getting pretty muddy around here of late...
WHAT IF...the reason Hunter doesn't get put on these polls...and the MSM don't talk about his is because they are AFRAID he could win??
Morris may hate Hillary...but he is a dem.
Everyone makes mistakes, but I knew right from the start when we got GW in the White House we would pay the price with more illegals and I said so to many people at work. Once he got the nomination it was over as far as I was concerned. It was him or fools like Kerry and Gore. No contest.
The primaries are where this stuff gets sorted out and that is all that is happening now. Whomever gets the nomination has my support, I just hope it is someone electable that at least shares some of my values.
President Hillary can't be allowed to happen. I can promise you no conservative progress will be made on any position once she gets her claws on the perch.
KO is such a fairy!
