Anyone who has observed politics for long sees that too many politicians believe nothing positive would happen unless they pass a law requiring it. They think that the American people are dependent on them for their wealth, safety, and happiness. This ''nanny state'' mentality has always been with us, but the nannyists in Harrisburg are working overtime to intrude into our lives.
For example, many lawmakers are pushing to ban smoking in all places of business. The bill would criminalize restaurant, bar, and other business owners who choose to allow smoking in their privately owned facilities. Supporters of the smoking ban argue it would protect patrons and employees from the harms of second hand smoke, despite the fact that those patronizing and working at these places are doing so voluntarily.
The nannyists refuse to recognize that the free market already provides smoke-free facilities for those who want them. Today, almost 80 percent of workplaces ban smoking without a government mandate to do so. Recently, a slew of restaurants in Pittsburgh (and national chains) and a number of (no longer ''smoke-filled'') bowling alleys voluntarily went smoke-free. Those restaurants that allow smoking typically limit it to a separate smoking section.
The recently passed minimum wage increase is another example of the nanny state mentality at work. Under the guise of raising the incomes of low-wage workers, lawmakers ignored the negative impact that artificial increases in labor costs have on unskilled employees. They further ignored the fact that fewer workers have been earning the minimum wage. Since the last federal minimum wage increase in 1997, the number of workers earning the minimum wage declined by 64 percent, while the total number of workers increased by 13 percent.

Ping - great article from PA
Nanny State Ping!
C’mon down across the Mason/Dixon and see the near-empty parking lots of the bars and local private clubs such as the Moose, the VFW, American Legion, AmVets, etc.
The bar owners and clubs are suffering greatly.
[except for the few with outdoor decks]
Everyone in my area has been slipping up to PA and over to WV, instead.
Looks like WV will get all of our money, now.
I have been arguing the above since and including my days in the college classroom. One hasn't lived until one has argued conservative points against the minimum wage in a classroom chock full of liberals.
I love reading the comments sections on these articles. Some hyperventilating lefty invariably shows up to make a complete ass of himself, to wit:
"Typical right wing rants. I invite the writer to come to my camp in Potter County and he and I will set out to seek the elusive (no, not Big Foot), the elusuvie non smoking establishment. There aren't any, yet the MAJORITY of people (even up there) are non-smokers. Why is it that the majority rule on, oh lets say, banning domestic partnerships in PA, is acceptable, yet majority rule on this smoking issue is simply trampling on your individual rights. Hypocrites."
I live just across the MD line on the Eastern Shore. The local American Legion on Chincoteague has see an increase in the number of Maryland members coming in. My husband and I also belong to the Moose, the same is true there, and as a bartender I see it even more. 90% of my new customers/visitors are all Moose members from the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Thanks for the ping to this good article.
Thanks for the ping!
I hope you’ll be kind to them....they’re refugees from a police state, ya know....:)
The left is the same way. They adore majority rule for smoker bans, but abhor it where marriage between turd burglars is concerned.
Kind to them? I love them, they’re among my best customers!!!!!
I understand the refugee concept. We moved here from Delaware, we used to go to Maryland on a regular basis after Delaware passed the smoker ban. We were treated very well and I’m just returning the favor!!!
There was a really great restaurant that was actually built out over the water...can't recall the name.
Do you know the one I mean and is it still there?
They served me a tiny, sizzling hot cast-iron skillet of butter-fried crab meat as an appetizer to the best seafood platter I've ever had.
Was that ever *good*.
Sadly, it’s all about TOTAL control. Today it’s smoking, tomorrow it’s your Cheeseburger and Margarita. Of course the ‘Elitists’ get to keep their Cigar Bars. Can’t touch this!
Cigarettes ARE a ‘gateway drug.’ A ‘gateway’ allowing the Nannies to tell us all how to live. Once the camels nose is under the tent, you’re doomed.
And we ARE doomed unless we all tell them to p*ss off. (And I don’t smoke.)
The money source never dries up and the focus just gets tighter.
Too true.
I never thought I’d see PA pinned under the jackboot.
Alas, Salamander, the waterfront restaurants are slowly being replaced by condos......actually not so slowly.
Captain Fish’s is gone and I think this is the last year for the Chincoteague Inn. I’m not sure what is going on with the Landmark, which I think may be the one you’re talking about.
Chincoteague is changing, and as far as many folks are concerned, not ofr the better. Too damned many liberal/progressive/socialists moving in trying to get away from the problems they’ve caused in their previous locales and now seek to impose them on us. And it’s not just Chincoteague it is all over the Eastern Shore.
They are trying damned hard, Elk. The idiots around here booted out our state senator last year and the one they elected is a major nanny statist when it comes to this issue. The previous one fought tooth and nail for us, and he is not and never was a smoker.
Oh well, I need to call it a night, with luck the weatherman will once again be wrong and maybe we won’t get rain tomorrow so I can get corn and beans planted tomorrow.
Oh wait, I smoke, I’m not supposed to be capable of physical activity, let alone physical labor. ROFLMSS!!!!!
I’ve dared many an anti-smoker to match me row for row turning up soil with an old fashioned hoe -— I’ve never had any takers, I wonder why!!!!
Salamander — pop me a FReepmail if you decide to take a visit to the Shore!!!!
