You call this a political party?
Denver Post ^ | 16 may 08 | David Harsanyi

Posted on 05/16/2008 5:06:34 AM PDT by rellimpank

Republicans are bracing for a political annihilation of epic proportions after losing a special election this week in a solidly conservative district in Mississippi — yes, Mississippi.

We can call this "a harbinger."

And Republicans not only deserve the flogging, they should be praying for more. We can call this "creative destruction."

When Democrats claim that Republican presidential candidate John McCain would mean a third term of the Bush presidency, they're not kidding. The GOP offers no coherent policy, no leadership, no imagination, no principles and, most important, it offers no choice.

The Democrat-run Congress now carries an approval rating of 18 percent — the lowest in history, according to Gallup. You may believe such mass discontent is fertile ground for a strong opposition party to emerge. You'd be wrong.

Pretty much sums it up for me.

McCain offers nothing that is inspiring or makes one enthusiastic to support him. He is just another politician making empty campaign promises and hoping voters don't look too closely at his 25-year record in Washington.

Like it or not, Obama is inspiring his followers and bringing enthusiasm to his campaign. He is also bringing in many new young voters. Obama's message (lofty words that have little substance, but they sound good) is resonating: He is something different, he represents a signficant change, he is not old-Washington-establishment-status-quo-same-ole.

Obama's trend in the primaries was to bring in new voters. If he continues that, he could bring in more than enough new voters to overcome the disaffected Hillary loyalists.

McCain depends on the old voters, and he has to reach across the aisle for disgruntled Dems and Independents for much of his support. It may not be enough, especially if the Conservatives write in Donald Duck or vote for a 3rd party or go fishing.

Pubbies will be rushing to replace all the Kerryites on the therapists' couches on the first Wednesday, following the first Tuesday, in November.

It make take the GOP decades to recover. Maybe by then, they will have pulled their heads out of the sand [or their derrieres] and wake up -- which they failed to do in the 06 slaughter.

One may believe such mass discontent is fertile ground for a strong opposition party to emerge.

A "strong opposition party" would emerge, if we had one. Like a chick breaking free from its egg, there must be strength in the party enough to make its escape.

Instead, we have dem-lites (at best) who have the gall to complain that they aren't winning - but who will not step up and unabashedly present a cohesive, conservative vision for America. And they wonder why the "I'm better than the other guy, trust me!" schtick isn't working any more.

The "harbinger" was sounded then, too, but many had their heads in the sand (or elsewhere).

Guys..a lot of folks seem to think what’s happening to the GOP is suicide....I contend its homicide.

In my mind, I keep coming back to what happened to Tom Delay.....

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1802383/posts

Washington is so jammed with parasites looking for a teat...that ANY organized opposition-IOW any Conservatives-will be run out of town . Period. This, folks, is a far BIGGER problem than just one with the Republican leadership.

Pay attention the the Farm Bill that just passed. Its not the average American Joe that is demanding handouts that’s driving the bus here.

It’s any large organization that has the cash to buy a few K St. lobbyists to twist congress’ arm. The boys on Capitol Hill that are unresponsive to said arm twisting...well these organizations can afford to make sure they’re replaced in the next election cycle-and in fact, with what the new boys will send them legislatively will far more than make up for the cost of replacing a recalcitrant congresscritter. We American’s have a far bigger problem on our hands here than any of us could possibly imagine in our worst nightmare.

“Just curious. Did the November 2006 results crack you up?”

No but the resulting posts on FR did. There was record voter turnout but FReepers were convinced everyone stayed home. It was hilarious. Instead of admitting the candidates that lost were just simply out-voted on the issues, Freepers had to seek comfort in the falsehood of low turnout.

THAT cracked me up. It was like watching monkeys play with a Rubiks Cube.

Funny how when rural Dems run to the right they win. They don’t have to worry about being labeled RINOs by not pandering to the Republican “base”, which is just about as loony as the Dems “base”. They have it made. The vitrol of the Rep “base” is reshaping the party, no doubt. Instead of blaming “RINO”s, a little introspection may be in order. This whole “if my uber-conservative guy had run we would have won” is a farce and not based in reality. FReepers who keep spouting that are lying to themselves and living in a fantasy-bubble.

I fear you’re on to something there.

I was disappointed to see that Saxby Chambliss, one of my Senators, was quoted supporting an override of Bush’s expected veto of the farm bill. I do not find this comforting.

In Mississippi, you did have a hard fought Republican primary just weeks before these runoffs with Childers between Greg Davis and Glenn McCollugh. McCollugh was the more establishment candidate and lost by only a few hundred votes. I personally don’t think many of McCullogh’s supporters came to Davis’ defense after such a hard fought primary with negative ads.

Add the DNC charge that Davis was KKK, which he is not of course, but it was used to stir up black churches.

LOL, this used to be true in the past. It certainly was with Kerry, but things are different now, Obama does get the yutes charged.

In the past they were not excited with the Vietnam era candidates. While I love our Vietnam era vets, I am married to one, the kids are ready to move on and are looking for someone that exudes a future, not just the past.

While we know Obama is an empty marxist suit, the yutes don't think so. They have been successfully indoctrinated. We should have run a more youthful, exuberant and exciting candidate, in the vein of Jindal, to inspire the yutes to our party. Instead we are running Obama lite, except he is old, too old and worn out. The yutes from 4 years ago are grown up now, we can no longer count on the fact that youngsters do not get to the polls.

Whats funny is that after the 2000 and 2004 election everyone thought the RAT party was finished. Repubs said they misinterpreted the reason for their losses and went left instead of moving center or right. Now a few years later the shoe is on the other foot and the Repubs stand on the verge of destruction. Like the RATS they also seem to be moving left (although in a confused chicken without a head sort of way). Face it, the repub party is like a plane in a flat spin, or a rudderless ship in a hurricane taking on water (feel free to pick your own analogy). The party has NO LEADERSHIP. W fiddles while the party burns. He does NOTHING, and like his dad, he appears OBLIVIOUS. Who can the Repubs depend on for support? Conservatives (the most loyal members) get poked in the eye on a regular basis and treated like lepers. Moderates (including spineless RINOS) can’t decide where they stand and provide no direction. Liberal repubs share most of their principles with the RAT party and so don’t really care. On the bright side...

It isn't tripe this year.

Look at the numbers. In those states where Obama won, he won with a primary vote that equaled the total primary votes cast in 2004 in that state. That means, adding Obama and Clinton votes together, the 2008 numbers were about 2x that of the 2004. That is significant.

Which Republican state primaries can claim that their voting numbers for 2008 were 2x those of 2004?

And, primaries tend to have fewer than 20% of the eligible party voters actually vote, so that leaves some 80% (plus Independents who may have been ineligible for the Dem or GOP primaries in their state) who will enter the voting booths in November.

W fiddles while the party burns.

If he had any real interest in the Party, he would have groomed a VP during his 2nd term to continue afterward.

Clinton did.
GHWB did.
Reagan did.

Most sitting presidents do.

W didn't.

Ain't that the truth. But instead, the republican party has gone into self-destruct mode, embracing massive amnesty, gloBULL warming, and all the other leftist causes that the rats have championed. Their strategy seems to be to move left and appease the idiots rather than engage the intelligent people that aren't so gullable as to accept as fact everything that they read in the left-wing media.

The fight should begin with the House leadership. We’re waiting for Boehner to come up with a plan of action. We need a plan like the Contract with America, not slogans.

Give Americans something concrete to get behind.

It’s not radical liberals that scare me. It’s the radical socialists/marxists! Obama is surrounded by them. It becomes more clear every day.

Everyone needs to wake up and see the threat and hold their nose and pull the damn lever in the voting booth.

This moral equivalence with Obama is the words of a loser. Sorry, but it’s complete and utter rubbish.

See what the California Supreme Court did yesterday? Imagine what a President Obama will do for the US Supreme Court? It’s a marxist dream to overturn the will of the people through the courts.

And President Obama will gladly do just that!

Wake up!!!

IMO, any member of Congress that loves their country and wants to defend our future against radical socialist Osama Hussein (Insane) Obama and his Marxist wife, better find their gonads and have the guts and spine to tell the American people just how precarious our future is both domestically and foreign.
