US, Israel signal war on Iran

Washington and Tel Aviv vow to take 'tangible action' to prevent Iran from acquiring 'nuclear weapons', an Israeli spokesman says.

Israeli premier Ehud Olmert's spokesman, Mark Regev, said on Friday that the diplomatic efforts to exert pressure on Iran to give up its uranium enrichment have so far been insufficient.

"It is clear that additional steps will have to be taken," he continued.

"We are on the same page. We both see the threat... And we both understand that tangible action is required to prevent the Iranians from moving forward on a nuclear weapon," said the Israeli spokesman.

Regev then claimed that 'leaders of many countries' have discussed the prospects of using military force against Iran and affirmed that Israel agrees with the 'options on the table', hinting at a war against the Middle Eastern country.

Speaking before the Israeli Knesset on Thursday, US President George W. Bush threatened that it would be an 'unforgivable betrayal of future generations' to allow Iran to pursue its 'nuclear weapons ambitions'.

While Bush continues to lobby in support of an act of aggression against the Islamic Republic, a December 3 joint assessment by 16 US spy agencies conceded that Tehran is not running a nuclear weapons program.

Pundits say the US president's go-to-war rhetoric has exposed his flagrant disregard for concrete evidence and expert opinion.

"I have said Iran is dangerous, and the NIE estimate doesn't do anything to change my opinion about the danger Iran poses to the world - quite the contrary," Bush has said in response to the release of the US National Intelligence Estimate.

I have one question: When is the order going to be given?

Obama would be put in a mighty uncomfortable position after any successful operation against Iran’s nuke facilities.

I'll believe it when I see it. Iran has its tendrils spread not just all over the Middle East but the world. Any action against them that is not COMPLETELY decisive and you'll have suicide bombers in the U.S. and Europe.

How humerous that will be if we did secure Iran and all of the violence ended in the Middle East. Of course saudi arabia will still be rear ending us every chance it gets to our energy bill but in terms of violence and funding for the violence in iraq would it be farfetched to predict peace in the Middle East after the day a US Flag is flown in Tehran. Hezbollah or Syria wont have a big brother anymore.

“I have one question: When is the order going to be given?”

When Olmert is in jail and Bibi is at the helm.

The last time Bibi “took the helm” he wasn’t any better than Olmert is now. He talked the talk until he got into office and then he flinched and backpedalled so hard he got leg ramps. Why should he be any different if he gets another shot at it?

Bush will probably put it off on the next administration. Actually I half expect Bush to suddenly announce a 6 month withdrawal from the ME.

Iran is dangerous. It will ultimately have to be stopped with force. Time is running out and such a radical regime must not be allowed to possess weapons of mass destruction.

I wonder if there are any flag officers who would disobey an attack order on Iran.

All of us out of the loop can only speculate as to when the attack on Iran will happen. But, I do not think the question of whether it will happen is confined to speculation.
Unless Iran makes a 180 degree turnabout, and soon, I see it as a certainty.
And, Bush will do it.
He already has said he will do it.
Iran’s conventional naval forces and regular army will not be specifically targeted on a first strike basis. Those professional forces (not as sure about the army as I am about the naval component) quite likely hate mr. and mrs. mullah hothead much more than we do. Every effort must be made to avoid damage to the citizenry. If Iran has a refinery, I would say don’t destroy it. Instead destroy the mullahs with prejudice. The big ol’ bullseye is on the nuke facilities, the mullah manors and the revolutionary guard (qud?) hangouts, as well as staging areas for the Iranian forays into Iraq. An electro magnetic shutdown of Iranian communication combined with simultaneous support using in-place aid and materiel to secular forces will be a nice dessert in the desert.
Cheney’s recent visit was just part of the groundwork. Bush’s current “how ya doin” trip to the ME, is, to me, proof of the inevitable 10 to fourteen day bombing campaign.
Russia, China, UK, France, Saudi, et al. know it’s coming, too; they may (will) bitch for public consumption, but they either approve of it or accept it or plan to help.
I also think it will be almost totally an American action. Overflight, logistics, intelligence from others yeah, but it’ll be US cruise missiles, special forces, and strategic bombers doing the work. Israel will help in the dark. Turkey too. Saudi too.
Bush has made a lot of bad calls, but I don’t think they have ever been coated in BS. For example, he easily could have put untraceable WMD in Iraq, but he didn’t. He said Iran won’t go nuclear on his watch. I just don’t think he’s the kind of guy to pass this buck to Barry H. Obama, the worldly one. He may wait to a Nov/Dec time frame to see how it’s going and whether Mac prevails, but I think he’ll do it even if Mac wins. Bush is smart but he is also very stubborn.
The only thing worse than attacking Iran is letting them go nuke and then destroy Israel (8 to 10 bombs might do it) and/or blackmail the entire region and, eventually, beyond, all the while getting a testicular grip on access to oil. We cannot let that happen. Although Iran going nuke is not an existential threat to us as it is for Israel, it remains, quite simply, unacceptable.
Isn’t it amazing that US forces currently and absolutely surround our Persian friends?
How did that happen?

You are right.
They should elect Nadia Matar as PM.

If this is even close to true, then consider this:

I've seen several posts here on FR about some kind of gasoline opportunity. I don't remember the details, but I need to look into it further. It goes something like this...

Pay up front for $1000 of gasoline. Maybe more.

Lock in the price at whatever $/gal that gets you. Maybe it's today's price, which is pretty close to $4/gal right now. That may seem like a lot.

If the US or Israel starts a serious shooting war with Iran, and it would be very serious very quick if it goes to the level to take away the capability of Iran to make nuclear bombs, then the price of gas could jump $2, $3, or even $4 overnight.

You would continue to pay your nominal $4 per gallon while everyone you know is paying through the nose.

I'm just sayin'...

These are very strong statements.

Will Bush and Israel do something before Bush’s term is up?

It would be problem in the beginning of winter if we get a energy cost spike while people are trying to heat their homes.

So do it on January 19th. But put the word out for people to fill their tanks (fuel oil, propane, diesel, gasoline, etc.) before Christmas and top them off before the 15th of January,

Good.

I was wondering what would get gas over $8.00 a gallon by election day.

They are still playing "after you" "oh no I insist, after you". Each is trying to convince the other that said other must do it and soon. Each is convinced - that the other should do it.

Well, you will be able to tell as soon as either actually gets serious, because you will wake up and the headlines will scream that Iran doesn't have a nuke program anymore. Until we see that, I am right. Wish I weren't...

“Israel will help in the dark. Turkey too. Saudi too.”

Israel might help, no one else. The dems are not trustworthy in the world stage. The world leaders fear less with Bush in office than the dems.

The world will be a rougher place with a dems president and they know it. Look at the history of the last dems presidents. Carter gave the world Iran.
