KALISPELL (AP) A man hunting black bear shot and killed a wolf near Olney, northwest of Whitefish.
Zachary Harms of Kalispell was driving his truck up a forest road Tuesday when he saw movement. He walked along the road with his rifle, thinking he may have seen a black bear.
Two wolves then ran out from the side of the road. One ran across the road and up the hillside. The other ran down the road towards Harms. The wolf closed to approximately 10 feet and Harms fired, hitting the female wolf in the front of the head.
The hunter contacted the sheriffs office later that day and reported he had killed a wolf. Two state game wardens investigated, and determined the shooting was in self-defense and was allowed under state law.

The wolf was in HARMS’ way.

I suppose they’ll prosecute this guy to fullest extent of the law, while they let mothers who murder their babies off scot free.

I thought if he yelled out “It is coming right for us!” before shooting he’d be in the clear...

Maybe they ought to put this guy in charge of children, while applying his wolf-treatment to mothers who murder their children - a shot to the “front of the head.”

Fortunately he wasn’t just some hiker that wasn’t armed.

UMMM - I think I read that the game wardens investigating the incident have already concluded that it was justified self defense and justified.

We live in a fairly wild place and if I see a dangerous critter here it’s history; “endangered” or not. I would bury it was small enough or haul it away and dump it into a ditch. Some of our roadside ditches are more than 100 feet deep. I said it was wild here. I would tell nobody.

How is this possible....the environmentalists keep telling us that wolves have not attacked a human in North America for over 100 years.

Here in Alaska, we have an over population of wolves. I've had wolves follow my dogteam, then jump off trail when they hear me coming back on return trip, quite common. Many wild animals have never seen humans and think food; not like back east where everything is conditioned to fear man.
Many cases of wolves threatening people but usually they take off soon as gun fire is heard.
My problem is they are always too far off when I see them from my boat on the Yukon, and they don't give me much chance at 500 yards in a boat with scope hairs swingin 3 foot all over old wolf; within 5 seconds, they are headin for the brush.
My only complaint with old wolf is that he eats too many moose, doesn't leave any around for the locals. Figure 6 moose/year for every wolf in Alaska. There's a reason why they kill 250,000 moose in Sweden and only 25,000 in Alaska.

10' or 100' my first instinct would be to feed her a ham sandwich not shoot her in the head.

He fired a HARM missile at the wolf? Was there anything left of the wolf afterwards? And at that close a range, why wasn’t he also killed?

I think that wolf had something a little different in mind.
(I'm sure it would have eventually gotten to any ham sandwich you might have been carrying, though.)
Wolves are not exactly
nice dogies, as Eska can probably confirm.

He’s lucky.
had he been investigated by some freepers rather than the local game wardens, he coulda been executed for cruelty to the noble wolf
