CROWN POINT | A 20-year-old man is accused of breaking into a Gary home, holding a knife to three children inside and then raping their 16-year-old baby sitter.
Cornelius Hines, of Gary, was lying naked, with a pair of socks on his feet and a rag on his head when Gary police arrived, Lake County Criminal Court records state.
The 16-year-old girl stood nearby crying, wearing only a white button-down shirt given to her by a neighbor.
Hines faces five felonies -- rape, criminal deviate conduct, confinement, burglary and battery.
The teen had just given the two young girls and little boy she was baby-sitting some cookies and tea Saturday when a man, later identified as Hines, came out of the master bedroom holding a knife in his right hand, police said.
He told the three children to stand against the wall, adding he would kill them if they said anything, court records state.
Hines then grabbed the teen by the arm and pulled her into the bedroom, threatening to kill her if she didn't do what he said, court records state.
He made the teen take off her clothes, held a knife to her back and then raped her, records state.
One of the children ran next door to the neighbor's house and told them what happened.
Someone knocked on the bedroom window while Hines and the teen were inside and then knocked on the front door. Hines let the teen go, and she opened the door, records state. The man at the door gave her a shirt to cover herself.
Police said Hines entered through a back window into the home.
Hines told police he went to the house to visit a friend, saw the teen in the bedroom and asked what she was doing. He said he started to take off his shorts and a knife fell out of his pocket, which scared her, police said. Hines said the kids heard the teen scream and then some "dudes" came in and one had a gun, records state.
Hines was taken into custody and bail was set at $150,000.
Notice the mention of the gun late in the article.
Is there a castle doctrine there? $1 worth of lead could have saved everybody money and wasted time. Not to mention, the perp would have gotten everything he deserves!
Dumb*ss.

I did notice that.
“It appears that the suspected rapist was caught and held for police by a neighbor with a gun, who rescued the girl. “
You don’t understand. He just went to house to visit his friend and the girl saw the knife, paniced and made the whole story up. He’s innocent.
Smart little kid ran for help and didn’t “obey” what the rapist said...good for him, he’s a hero too.
Nicely written article. I was wondering when/if the writer was going to get to why the perp was found by the police naked, with a rag on his head.
This happened in Gary, so at least the neighbor had the right to go home and GET a gun.
Had this happened just over the border in Chicago the best the neighbor could have done is a Louisville Slugger or perhaps his Stihl chainsaw.
Gary is one rough town. The murder rate there is nearly nine times the national average, and it leads much of the nation in all the major violent crime categories - including rape, sadly.
Prayers for the victim.
I hope this guy gets a girlfriend named Precious whilst in prison.
I hope the State does its duty and protects him and all other prisoners from assault. But he should be put to hard labor for life, and, according to almost any religion one could name, his problems will really start after that.
You’ve just stated the case for our
“evolving standards of decency”.
Isn’t liberalism grand? Hasn’t our society prospered greatly because of their ideas? Makes me want to backhand the next person I meet that spouts some liberal nonsense.
The article doesn’t makes sense.
Wouldn't that be deviant conduct?
If that happened to my daughter, the chain saw would be ideal....and I’d know exactly where to start.
Kudos to the kid who went and got the neighbor.
Kudos to the neighbor for bringing a gun.
Just waiting for the Supreme Court ruling on right to carry LAW.
This is why we should have the death penalty for rape.
Some folks take off their shoes when entering the house, others take off their shorts.
You got a problem with that?
Heaven help us This lowlife scum will no doubt have a long record and will be out on probation to commit further acts of violence on society.
Like this?
Well, maybe the “dudes” should be arrested - they probably scared those kids and I’ll bet that the guns were the real reason the babysitter was crying.
I agree, but that kind of punishment isn't even a slim possibility.
Which is why many of us wish for a punishment that may really occur, a girlfriend named Precious.
Judging by his name, I already know enough.
This child needs to be significantly rewarded.
If you’re talking about Heller vs. District of Columbia, the second ammendment got a thorough underscoring.
Gasp! You, Don Imus, you! 0bama’s going to get you.
For what it’s worth, I also thought that Cornelius Heinous was a telling name.
I certainly agree this "man" deserves the harshest pusnishment. I think the death penalty would be warranted, as long as there was no doubt about the crime or his identity.
Sadly, you are 100% correct that he won't be punished properly. He'll probably spend his days pumping iron, watching cable TV, and assaulting his fellow inmates while fantasizing about what he'll do when he gets out. It's sickening.
I have a big problem, though, with winking at state-sanctioned prison rape. Bubba jokes are not at all funny, in my opinion. The state acts in my name, and I want no part of lawlessness and torture, even for those who deserve the worst. Two wrongs don't make a right.
