Battle looms over oil drilling off Florida's coast

PENSACOLA BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - For decades opposition to oil drilling off Florida's coast was one of the few issues uniting the state's Democrats and Republicans, who agreed that shielding the environment and the huge tourism industry came first.

Not now, as oil prices rise and U.S. motorists are paying serious prices at gasoline pumps.

Last week Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican who often sounds like a Democrat, shattered the consensus by calling for an end to a federal moratorium on oil and gas drilling along the country's outer continental shelf.

His decision follows the stance of Republican presidential candidate John McCain on an emotional issue before November's election. Two Republican Florida congressmen also backed Crist.

What some see as a crack in the protective shield for Florida's $57 billion tourism industry has drawn howls of protest from Democrats and environmental groups.

They worry that the long battle against oil drilling in the Sunshine State has entered a new phase as spiraling gas prices threaten the status quo.

We in Florida need a campaign to vote out of office all (no matter the party) that will not allow drilling because they are idiots and need to move to another state or country.

Well gee. What’s gonna hurt Florida’s “57 Billion Dollar Tourism Industry” more? $10 per gallon gas and $1500 coach airfares, or oil drilling out of sight over the horizon out in the gulf?

Can the morons in Floriduh guess?

We in AMERICA need a campaign to vote out of office all (no matter the party) that will not allow drilling because they are idiots and need to move to country.

There that’s better. And yes, we need to do this now.

I thought the Federal Government jurisdiction was 12 miles off the coast. Wouldn't it just create sh@@ if a drilling company moved to Mexico, made an agreement to let the oil flow to Mexico for a percentage and screw the US. Oh, I forgot, they are doing it.

i think we can logically assume that the congress goons who oppose off shore drilling and america becoming energy independent have been bought off by interests who don't want that to happen.

if america is going to survive, voters better wake up and get rid of these maggots

Speaking as simply one, native-born, Floridian I say “go for it!” If gas keeps going up all of Florida is going to suffer, not just those along the beaches.

Maybe the State itself should go into the oil business and start exploring on its own property. Use the revenue to offset the taxes we pay.

If Florida or any other coastal state won’t agree to offshore drilling, ban all out-of-state drivers of gas guzzlers from entering the state: no travel to Florida in things like motor homes, RVs, big trucks pulling Airstreams or boats, etc.

Think of all gasoline that will save. There’s probably no one non-essential type of travel in the US that waste more gas than gas guzzlers headed for Florida, Disney World and the beaches. All non-essential travel.

Or maybe they can agree to help with the nation’s energy problem and allow drilling like a good grown up should.

I think if they started charging Flordia about $16.00 a gallon of gas we’ed have this settled in a couple of days

Anyone care to point out what Democrats this guy is talking about? As far as I can tell the vast majority of Dems are the ones keeping us from drilling by siding with the greenies who wish to destroy America. He must mean Democrats from some other country, maybe China since they are going to drill our oil off the coast while we sit on our hands and let it happen.

Oops, misread the posting, disregard my preivous comment #14. Still, reverse what I said and tell me why Republicans would actually not want to drill unless they are Rinos bent on destroying our country.

As a Texan, I am all for adding an export tax of $.50 per gallon on all gas transported out of the state.

Maybe then some of these fools would feel the need to explore their own states for natural resources. Heck, maybe then we could pay less for gas here, too.

CIBC Report $7/Gal Gas in Less Than 2 Years

DON SURBER: Saving our coasts by ravaging Nigeria. Plus this proposal: "Slap a dollar-a-gallon tax on residents of any coastal state that bans drilling in the Pacific or Atlantic, and give that money to people who live within a mile of a coal-fired power plant."

HEY FLORIDA RESIDENTS....My wife and I drove from Virginia to Sarasota this spring. We spent 8 nights at a lovely hotel and visited many restaurants in the area. My wife and daughters did quite a bit of shopping.

We venture to guess that the trip cost about $2500. I would just love to return to the area. Also there were plenty of taxes that I was paying into the local economy.

Well, it is not bad. IT WON’T HAPPEN! Gas prices are too high.

So, what will it be?

trouble with that is Kennedy got a law passed that in part sez the oil producing states have to sell to the non oil producing states cheaper than what they sell it in their own state

Alabama has offshore drilling, in sight of Dauphin Island.
However, they have strict discharge rules and no oily beaches yet. Gulf Shores is right next to Pensacola across
Perdido Bay. make a rule that the rigs and their lights can’t be seen from shore, better yet push them out 50 miles. That leaves alot of territory for drilling.
BTW, platform rigs create manmade reefs, promoting better
fishing. Pensacola recently sank the aircraft carrier
Oriskany offshore to build a reef and promote diving.
It’s done in Louisiana big time.
