Posted on 06/28/2008 8:30:43 PM PDT by Darnright

The woman, identified by police as Loraine May, was found by her son Thursday evening inside her home on Elliot Avenue (see map). He called 911 and officers responded around 5:00pm.

The two dogs suspected by police in the attack, a golden lab mix and an Australian Shepherd mix, were taken into custody by Brevard County Animal Control. Police said they don't believe her third dog, a cocker spaniel, was involved.

There is a video at the link. A neighbor told the newsgirl that the 2 dogs "were ornery". A sad case, and most likely the result of a couple of dogs that ran the household, instead of their elderly, frail owner.

My first thought is that I wonder if the dogs may have gotten overzealous in trying to alert their possibly unconscious/unresponsive owner to something and ended up clawing her severely and because of her frailty it was fatal. I guess we’ll all have to wait and see.

There’s a theory at the link that one or both big dogs attacked the cocker and the woman tried to break up the fight.

Yes, I saw that. I was offering my own theory.

What do the cops mean “the three dogs manipulated the scene before they arrived”? Are they suggesting the dogs pulled out all the drawers and threw stuff around to make it look like a burglary gone bad?

Of course not. No way was the cocker involved.

“the Brevard County Medical Examiner’s Office led them to believe her death was caused by multiple, blunt trauma, inflicted by two of her three dogs”

They were obviously hiding the baseball bats and bricks they killed her with.

[this sounds more like some *person* killed her...or did the dogs head-butt her death?]

Sounds like three dogs too many. There's a "pet" she could better handle.....

That sounded very odd to me also. I wonder if they knocked her down, killing her by fracturing her skull? Then the business about the dogs “manipulating the scene”, did they tear her body apart (shudder)?

Oh, I don’t know. She could have probably lived out her life easily with one cocker spaniel. But, a pack of dogs can be quite unpredictable.

She could have had a heart attack or stroke. Autopsy should tell.

It’ll be weeks before anyone knows what really happened to her, according to the article but nonetheless, the family has already decided to kill the dogs.

For whatever reason, to me, the whole story sounds very “wrong” and very suspicious.

I’m wondering about the son who “found her”.

Something just doesn’t “smell right”.

She very well might have gotten into the middle of a dog fight, if thats the case I can understand. Also, once the old woman was knocked down and injured, she was game for getting attacked by any of the three. And as another poster pointed out, if the dogs ran the house it was only a matter of time for something like this to happen.

I have 30 years experience as a dog groomer. I’d suspect the Cocker FIRST!!!! LOL!!! Some of my worst bites have come from cockers.

How in the sam hill does a dog inflict “multiple blunt trauma”?

The one thing a dog can’t do to you is haul off and punch you.

And I’ve never heard of dogs attacking people by butting them with their bonehaids.

Suuure it wasn't. Cocker sounds a lot like copper which has been shortened to cop. Just another example of cops covering up for one another.

Mixed with what... Satan? Alternatively, perhaps she was felled by a stroke and the distressed dogs were trying to wake her up. Columbo wouldn't be fooled by the innocent-looking cocker spaniel, though.

I know what you mean. I was putting Frontline on a docile sweet kittah and she bit and clawed me real good. Had to get some shots and pills to get rid of the infection.

Next time, cover the cat’s head with a blanket or towel, and it might give you just enough time to get the Frontline on without bloodshed.

“one or both big dogs “

An Australian Shepherd is NOT a big dog. Smart, tenacious, and bossy. They are incredibly loyal to the master and/or family. At around 35 pounds ours was not big.

Ours ruled every dog that approached and wanted them calm and peaceful. Neighborhood pit bulls, grerman Sheppard's, great danes, etc that came up to any member of our family barking or acting aggressively were put in their place. She hated them barking and acting aggressive to anyone.

As much of an alpha as she was she never attacked any dog or human. I don't know how but she just intimidated them. However her infrequent bark came on fast and was intense! She wanted everything calm.

So I would be highly suspect if this occurred and the dog was hers. So I think this article is not at all in character for an Australian Shephed as I know them.

Good point. Cats only kill things smaller than they are.

Cats will just devour you after you die. Of course, they won’t go for help while you’re dying — they’ll just watch inscrutably, or breathe fish breath in your face, or waft their tails in your nose.

Aussies are good dogs but they are “nippy” because they are sheepdogs.

The lab would lick yo to death.

we’ve always said that if anyone broke into our home, the lab would open the door and carry their stuff for them (as long as he was patted), and the dachsie would do anything they asked as long as they threw her tennis ball.
