John McCain 'fails to pay taxes'
Telegraph ^ | 30 June 2008 | Toby Harnden

Posted on 06/30/2008 10:49:34 AM PDT by BGHater

John McCain and his wife failed to pay house taxes and owe more than $225,000 on credit cards, it has been revealed.

Newsweek, which discovered that Senator McCain and his wife Cindy, a beer heiress worth an estimated $100 million, owed $6,744.42 in delinquent property taxes on a California home, commented acidly: "When you're poor, it can be hard to pay the bills. When you're rich, it's hard to keep track of all the bills that need paying."

After the magazine told the McCain campaign about the tax debt most of it was paid off immediately and an aide said that an elderly aunt of Mrs McCain, who lives at the San Diego property, appeared to have ignored the bills.

A San Diego county tax collector said that the McCains were more than four years in arrears and that approximately three per cent of the county's one million house owners defaulted annually. "We do hear an awful lot of excuses for why people don't pay."

The McCains own at least seven properties and are fabulously wealthy.

But in a recent Senate financial disclosure form, Mr McCain reported that his wife owed between $200,000 and $500,000 on two American Express cards while a joint card was in arrears by between $10,000 and $15,000.

In addition, one of their dependent children owed between $15,000 and $50,000 to American Express. All the cards appeared to be charge cards, which means the balances have to be paid off each month.

This poor anti conservative schmuck has no idea what the media has in store for him. Too bad it's America that must suffer.

Actually AMEX lets you carry balances depending on the card. Shoddy reporting, as usual.

$6,744.42 over four years on homes worth a million plus would be like most of us miswriting a check for a buck or two off.... wow they are getting desperate.

To have the Dems pounce this hard, this far before the elections means they are really fearful of what is to come.

Yeah, so let’s elect a Marxist, possibly not even a citizen, proto-Muslim, racist, Daley-machine Chicago ward-heeler/ACORN fraudster with absolutely ZERO real-world experience to be president! Sounds like a plan!!

All the cards appeared to be charge cards, which means the balances have to be paid off each month.

So there's no problem. So there's no reason to bring it up.

It seems like McCain is being accused of 3 crimes here:

1) Being rich
2) Using credit cards
3) Paying a tax bill when notified that it hadn't been paid.

When a rapist occupied the White House, the media didn't care about his transgressions. I guess his crimes didn't rise to the level of concern.

you are right. Brit lib media is very interested this year. They feel like Bush worked Blair over, so they want to influence our election.

They really feel like our elections impact them.

Is that for their personal use, or is it Cindy's business credit card. Often a business can't get a credit card, so the owner has to get a personal card herself.

Cheap shot. Apparently the county was sending the annual tax bill to the wrong address & company the Mrs. McCain had arranged to handle the condo her elderly aunt lives in. I think the Wall Street Journal has the article explaining it.

Actually, it’s a piece of property owned by a trust set up by his wife. Their finances are separate. I have a credit card that allows you to pay a minimum amount and, if you want, take 20 years to pay off the entire balance.

Since most Americans carry a good deal of credit card debt, this could make him a man of the people and populist. Recycle some Bubba, with I feel your pain. I think a majority of Americans are overweight as well. The RINO relic and his wife needs to put on few pounds as well. Overweight with a ton of credit card debt and the presumptive Republican candidate can reinvent himself from your typical Washington insider Senator who married a millionaire heiress candidate to a man of the people.

WTH does "appeared to be charge cards" mean? How can these obamaflaks know what type of AMEX card it is?

I have an AMEX card and when I use it, I pay it off in full when the bill comes. But there is no requirement to do so.

And the Newspeak spin on any high credit balances they had would be that they were a “young, struggling couple trying to make ends meet - just like most everyday Americans”.

The city had the wrong address so the tax bills never reached the trust that was responsible for paying them.

Not that I am a fan of McCain..... but I’ll jump to his defense on this issue. In his income bracket, $50,000 a month could very well be what they have charged to the cards this month, and what they will pay off at the end of the month when the card payments are due. What in the world is wrong with that?

If this is the best this inept reporter can come up with, then he is really a sad case.

I live in San Diego and this is a non story
(Back Property Taxes Due To A Postal Error)

The left wing took part of the story and not the explanation and the MSM is orgasmic.

Sorry, the left will have to try again, there is no there, there.

Cindy McCain Owes About $7,000 In Back Property Taxes Due To A Postal Error

This, of course, necessitates a breathless Newsweek article with no fewer than four reporters on the by-line.

Apparently the back taxes are for a property where an elderly aunt of Cindy’s lives.

The taxes weren’t paid because the financial trust that manages the property hasn’t been getting the property tax bills in the mail.

Which is clearly a blight on the character of Cindy McCain, right?

Meanwhile, the fact that Michelle Obama’s employer got a $1 million earmark from her husband has yet to garner any major media coverage.

Certainly Newsweek hasn’t assigned four of its intrepid reporters to the matter yet.

I agree with that comment.

I will also state that some of this is troubling. There may be some extenuating circumstances or easy explanations. I wouldn't fault the McCains on this before hearing more.

I don't like seeing people of status take liberties with their business arrangements, but that may not be the case here.

These sound like the boxes that McCain checked on a financial disclosure form. Add a couple of pejorative adjectives and this noninvestigative reporter has a hot story on his hands.
