| WASHINGTON, June 30, 2008 President Bush today signed a $162 billion supplemental bill that principally will fund U.S. military operations abroad.
Bush thanked congressional leaders of both parties for agreeing to provide what he described as vital funds to men and women in uniform serving in harms way.
I appreciate that Republicans and Democrats in Congress agreed to provide these vital funds without tying the hands of our commanders and without an artificial timetable of withdrawal from Iraq, he said.
The bill takes shape as Iraq experiences the lowest levels of violence since March 2004. The legislation also comes to fruition as the last of the five Army brigades to deploy with the troop surge in Iraq prepares to return next month.
Bush announced the temporary 33,000-troop surge in January 2007 to tamp down violence in Iraq and help prepare Iraqs national security forces to maintain security. The first surge brigade returned home in March, and the final redeployment next month will reduce the number of brigades in Iraq to 15.
We welcome them home, Bush said, referring to redeploying troops. And with this legislation, we send a clear message to all that are serving on the front line that our nation continues to support them.
The funding also provides servicemembers a more generous education package, which for the first time could be passed to family members if troops opt not to use it themselves. Bush said transferability of GI Bill education benefits helps fulfill a debt of gratitude the nation owes military families.
They endure sleepless nights and the daily struggle of caring for children while a loved one is serving far from home, he said. We have a responsibility to provide for them, so I'm pleased that the bill I signed today includes an expansion of the GI Bill.
It will help us to meet our responsibilities to those who support our troops every day, America's great military families, he added.
Other items in the legislation include a $465 million initiative that partners the United States with Mexico and other Central American nations in an effort to crack down on violent drug-trafficking gangs. It provides nearly $2.7 billion in relief for states that experience disasters, such as the recent flooding and tornadoes in the American Midwest. The bill also expands unemployment insurance benefits.
The president praised the legislation as an example of successful bipartisan support for members of the U.S. military.
This bill shows the American people that even in an election year, Republicans and Democrats can come together to stand behind our troops and their families, he said.

The war in Iraq which we are winning is funded into next year (the Democrats promised to defund it when they gained control of congress)and all you can say is Bush is overspending?

Don’t worry. When the Democrats and Obama win in November, they;ll make Bush look like Scrooge. Barry has programs you haven’t even thought of, like the one to eliminate global poverty to the tune of 800 million dollars to be given to the United Nations to administer. You’ll really have something to complain about.

I see. Billions in bloated spending, the largest expansion of American government in history, historically high budget deficits, a dollar in the dumps, a trade deficit of $800 billion and growing, no energy policy, no communications strategy, an administration-mismanaged 7-year war approaching $1 Trillion dollars, a national debt of $9 trillion and growing...a country so unhappy, and a Republican brand so tarnished that they're considering a racist Marxist to take his place
How much slack can you give the federal government? We're bankrupting ourselves.
To: SandRat
162 billion divided by 300 million gives over a half million per person.
That is some serious scratch.
How else are they going to come up with the cash, except for printing it?
Yes I support the President and our troops, but how can we afford this? I can hear we cant afford not to, but still, really, how?

I want my government to be responsible, cost-effective, accountable and results oriented. I would like my government to be informed of the situation on the ground, cognizant of regional history and in possession of an effective strategy for victory before it commits our brave troops to war half way around the world. I expect more than throwing hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars blindly searching for a strategy to defeat an enemy that was in its “last throws” six years ago. $8,000 per second in Iraq...
To: woofie
I’m not debating the wisdom of the war. I get it.
I’m wanting to know the plan for securing the cash.
If I’m expected to pay my share for next year, I’m going to have to adjust my budget a tad.

No, just a conservative who would like to see the sacrifices of our troops matched by the competence of our leaders.

Then you should vote Republican in November.

The Iraqi’s are taking over more of their own affairs and hitting many of the Dim-O-RAT set benchmarks every day. Things are progressing slowly yet progressing.

No, just a conservative who would like to see the sacrifices of our troops matched by the competence of our leaders. Why not a Conservative who sees that the troops are still a major concern by a President who wants to see them succeed, instead of sounding like a liberal hag b*tching about the cost of the war?

...I surely will. Unfortunately I am sure I will be disappointed once again.
To: submarinerswife
If spending were directly proportional to results you might have a point. I continue to support the troops and the war effort, indeed we have no other choice, but our Iraq price tag, edging ever towards a trillion dollars and currently estimated to be $8,000 per second has me worried also. It is perplexing to me that others feel we can spend hundreds of billions in oil rich Iraq without need to be concerned about our expenditures. I note also that typically, today's $162 billion war appropriation included a: "$465 million initiative that partners the United States with Mexico and other Central American nations in an effort to crack down on violent drug-trafficking gangs. It provides nearly $2.7 billion in relief for states that experience disasters, such as the recent flooding and tornadoes in the American Midwest. The bill also expands unemployment insurance benefits... More fiscal restraint.

Thank you for the reply. I apologize for calling you Nancy Pelosi. Surely you must be (judging by your whining Liberal-lite rhetoric) none other than Ron Paul.
Now I see the light.

I see you would rather call me names than have a rational or even spirited discussion about our dual responsibilities as conservatives to both win wars, and effectively manage them (and our other finances). I will leave you to think I am somehow your political opponent.
Thank your husband for his service.
