Democratic Sen. Barack Obama has announced his opposition to a November ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriage in California, a move that puts gay rights front and center in the 2008 presidential campaign.
In a letter to San Francisco's Alice B. Toklas Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Democratic Club Sunday, the presumptive presidential nominee said he opposed "the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution" and similar efforts in other states.
Earlier last week, Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, the GOP standard-bearer in November, took the other side. He told officials of Protect Marriage, a coalition that gathered 1.1 million signatures for the California measure, that he backed their efforts "to recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman."
Obama is skating gingerly past his previous position on the issue. The Illinois senator has said repeatedly that he believes marriage should only be between man and a woman. When the California Supreme Court overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage in May, Obama released a carefully nuanced statement saying he respected the court's decision, believed states should make their own decisions on marriage and "will continue to fight for civil unions as President."
But civil unions, gay activists have often argued, aren't the same as marriage, which would put Obama on the wrong side of what's increasingly seen as a civil rights issue.
Obama's opposition to the same-sex marriage ban, however, brought immediate praise from groups trying to defeat Prop. 8 in California, which would amend the state constitution to say that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
"It's great to see Senator Obama's statement, which is consistent with what he has said in the past about allowing each state to make its own decision," said Geoff Kors,

What a weird time we live in....
The American flag has been taken down at the Fire Island Pines gay beach resort and replaced with the flag of California in honor of that state’s legalization of same-sex marriage.

How soon until we get to recall the CA Supreme Court justices who usurped the power of the people?

This guy can’t even tell the truth consistently within one sentence. Obama said he supported the right of states to make the decision, but he opposes a ballot-initiative that would give the citizens power to make the decision. How is that consistent unless he simply means that only liberal state supreme courts have the right to make the decision.
Obama is smarter than either Gore or Kerry (maybe “smarter” isn’t the right word - “more clever” may be more like it). He is just as smooth as Clinton and has Clinton’s same ability to change position seamlessly and shamelessly and to make those who point this out appear to be partisan bigots. His adherents are even more fanatical than Clinton’s and more than willing to use any means available to get their guy elected.
The real cause for alarm here is that Obama is farther left than any presidential candidate in my lifetime and the leftist party currently controlling the congress is farther left as a group than any I can recall. The collaboration of Obama and a leftist congress will result in leftist judges in the Ginsberg mold. Hillary could be confirmed in record time with a filibuster-proof senate voting on her nomination. No one has discussed it but how about Gore as a nominee to the court? Nothing would surprise me.
Once installed such a government will be capable of anything. And with the media propaganda machine behind them they will feel safe to do whatever they like. And they will.
Prop. 8 is going to pass by a healthy margin, and Obama is going to be on the losing side of a major issue. Go ahead B-HO, oppose it enthusiastically.
We live in a time of such debauchery that the 10 Commandments are obstructed from public view, and homosexuals can defile the concept of marriage in their place.
And yet, too many of the moral people in this country have be lulled into complacency against this corrosion with the sweet, soft lie of “tolerance”. In fact, the real coup is that they have been made to turn against their own by the corrupt.
It’s not just wrong, it’s outright Satanic.
Also, once one or two states like MA and CA decide to legalize homosexual marriages, the feds will force other states to recognize them.
Obama must have overestimated the amount of queer voters in CA. The people who want to ban “gay” marriage vastly outnumber the ones who don’t and they take it seriously enough to have voted it down recently and are slightly irritated(and that includes liberal democrats)about the CA supremes striking down a voter initiative. We will vote the constitutional amendment in this fall and if obama continues to be against it he may lose CA. Wouldn’t that be a kick in the head for him!
Why? Does Obama want to marry a man? Is he going to divorce Michelle or will it be a marriage-a-trois? (Maybe that should be mirage-a-trois.)
>> Obama opposes California same-sex marriage ban, which McCain supports
I intitally missed the word “ban” in the headline, and was momentarily befuddled.
Nonetheless, this is a HUGE winner of an issue for McCain. Homosexual marriage isn’t supported anywhere except the coasts (and Austin), and even there, it isn’t popular enough to win at the ballot-box.
H
Obama gets away with more because he’s black and his middle name is Hussein so it’s a “smear” to say anything bad about him.....lest we all be called the most horrible of words: RACIST
Ping.
Good for McCain. Keep this type of stuff up and he will earn a lot more votes. I’m not on the hold your nose and pull the lever line yet, but McCain is showing some real leadership on an issue like this.

It’s an Age of Grand Irrationality
Obama you fraud....wolf in sheeps clothing.... plenty of wool to pull and bamboozle over the eyes of the sheeple drones. Religious hypocrite!
Mmmm...do you mean smokers or Big Tobacco? ehehehehe!
Oh really? Methinks you are cherry picking here... Obama is a Federal socialist moron...
Senator McCain is not going to exploit this. He thinks being nice is the way to get elected. He will be wrong.
Yes. I wasn't too happy about his showing up on Ellen Degenerate's show, but was surprised and somewhat hopeful that he didn't back down on his position on marriage. He was nice about it, but firm.
I'm hoping this will earn him more votes than most people realize.
I've posted this recommendation before, but get/borrow a copy of Wild in the Streets, a 1969ish movie that explores this very scenario - a leftist government with complete control. Truly frightening.
Don't worry, he'll reverse himself in different company - and not even remember that he pandered to the pansies.
You've just been handed a huge wedge issue!
Something like: Obama would select Supreme Court judges who favor gay marriage, just like the judges in California.
And I wont!
It's just a thought....
McCain opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment, so this is all just smoke and mirrors from him. His “it should be up to the states!” will hardly wash when other states are forced to recognize the marriags.
This begs for a graphic.

Obama = tax-hiking, Pro gay marriage and pro-abortion pro-liberal judicial activist extremist.

America as we knew it is toast if he is president.
The DNC and RNC are doing a huge number on the country.

Mind-Spinner
Are you attempting to make everyone dizzy or nauseous? lol
No, lol, hope it didn’t bother you.
Any picture of Obama bothers me, but I appreciate your creativity.
Thank you!
