IRS Wants You to Chat About Stimulus Checks This July 4
Madistan.com ^ | July 1, 2008 | Steven Elbow

Posted on 07/01/2008 4:24:42 PM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

IRS officials are asking people who plan on attending family get-togethers over the Fourth of July weekend to be on the lookout for relatives who received economic stimulus checks.

"The July 4 holiday is a perfect opportunity to encourage family and friends to reach out to those who may not have heard about the stimulus payment," said Christopher Miller, IRS spokesman in Milwaukee.

Miller said there are 77,000 disabled veterans and retired people in Wisconsin, including 4,242 in Dane County, who have not filed tax returns, a necessary step in getting a stimulus check. But many residents aren't required to file a tax return because they don't make enough money or their benefits are not taxable.

"They're not used to filing a return, they're not required to file a return in many cases, and therefore it's not on their radar," Miller said. "Maybe you have an elderly grandparent who's not tapped into the news and maybe you know a veteran who does receive benefit income and is likely eligible to receive a stimulus payment but they have not filed a return."

Congress approved the payments as part of a stimulus in the hope that the money would be spend on goods and services, thereby pulling a slowing economy out of the doldrums.

To get the stimulus payment, people who don't normally files a tax return need to file a simplified 1040A tax form. The payments are for $300 per person, or up to $1,200 for a married couple plus $300 for each dependent child.

People are eligible for the payments if they make at least $3,000 in benefit income, including Social Security, veterans benefits railroad retirement benefits. They are also eligible if they have earned income of at least $3,000.

The IRS sent letters earlier this year to those that officials believe qualify for the stimulus check but haven't filed their taxes. A second round of letters will go out in coming weeks.

The IRS has sent out nearly three-fourths of the stimulus checks to on-time tax filers so far, according to a schedule using the last two digits of Social Security numbers. The department will mail out checks to those with numbers that end in 76-99 by July 11.

Miller said a relatively small number of people have not gotten checks because of other problems, such as not filling out a change of address form or filing an extension on their taxes. Others have not filed a name change with the Social Security Administration, causing checks to be held up for newly married couples when the names on the tax forms don't match the Social Security numbers.

Those still awaiting checks can log onto the IRS stimulus check information page where people can plug their names and Social Security numbers into a tracking program that will provide the status of payments.

People can also call the IRS information line at 1-800-829-1040, or visit a local IRS office.

Ours covered a small portion of the capital gains tax we were forced to pay because we sold some stock.

How about just letting us keep our own money in the first place?

It was a nice start. Next, let's have the IRS give back all of our money and abolish the IRS.

Now how much will the gov’t spend (of our tax money) for this advertising.

I’ll be happy to chat about stimulus checks...

WHY THE H$!! did I only get $437 instead of the promised $600? The explanation is clearly lacking and I feel cheated. To punish the government, I’m going to back the money instead of getting a new gun to celebrate the Heller ruling. So there! No economic stimulating for you until I get my full $600! I’M SAVING IT!

Your nuts! This Conservative considers it a tax reduction. Period. I would like to see more tax reductions and more spending cuts, thank you.

How can you possibly think it is a Conservative principal to insist that government waste more taxpayer money? What are you smoking? What on earth gives you the twisted notion that it would be Conservative practice to send our tax reduction checks BACK to the government to waste?

That’s WAAAAAAYYYY too radical of an idea. You must be some sort of economic conservative... let me explain how this works: the government solves all your problems and you pay the government tons of money. Note, in the case the government can’t solve you problems, drop dead.

I have to wonder who’s paying for this “stimulus” check. We already run deficits, so did they just create this money out of thin air, or do they plan to tax us for it later... cuz that kind of defeats the purpose of the thing in the first place.

How about a stimulus check for the retired people who got shortchanged on their checks for this year. Inflation has been reported as over 4% of this year while the SS checks were increased 2.3%.

We just received a letter today from the IRS stating we would soon be mailed our Stimulus Check in the amount of $4.90.

I have no doubt that it cost more than that to print and mail the letter.

I think I shall splurge and buy a gallon of milk when the check arrives.

“I guess we are the evil rich.”

Our taxes are screwed up this past year due to an unscrupulous business partner who needs a trip to the woodshed, IMHO. We have an extension until August, and we have an excellent CPA, so we’ll be OK, but I’m not sure we’ll see anything in the way of a “stimulus check” either. Grrrrrrr!

What a mess this has been. Sending checks to the wrong people, checks being delayed.

I know. Amazingly, many Americans want this same inept government to be in charge of their children's education, all of the nation's medical needs, and even the preservation of our cherished values.

If the Feds can't even print and deliver checks properly, what makes anyone think they can handle something as complicated as national health care?

First of all its not a reduction of taxes since they already got your money. Its a "free" handout by the government, plain and simple.

If it was a tax reduction the refund would be a percentage of income, which it clearly is not.

I told you why I wouldn’t return this check. I see it as a reduction in my taxes paid this year. That is not how they term it, but that is why I said a conservative wouldn’t return the money.

Now tell me again why you think a Conservative should return the check?????????? This is not like welfare, where the recipient takes money that some other taxpayer contributed to the system.

What was your reason for saying a Conservative would return the check, because you have completely and totally lost me.

As for your saying a tax decrease has to be a percentage of income — no it doesn’t. The personal exemption is a flat rate, not a percentage.

Call it whatever the hell you want to, but you haven’t made your case why a Conservative would return the money, and I have made the case why a Conservative would see this as a reduction in taxes paid and keep the check. I win. You lose. See ya.

Pulease... The incumbents figure it's a nifty way to buy votes. They won't do squat for the economy long term.

You need a side business to build equity by investing more of your income. Remember almost 50% of the population pays no federal taxes.
