Rabid Anti-Gay Group Gets Caught Caught Redhanded Altering the News
The Houston Chronicle ^ | July 2, 2008 | Bob Cavnar

Posted on 07/02/2008 1:20:18 PM PDT by ConservativeDude

Onenewsnow, the news clipping service of rabid right wing hate group American Family Association, heavily edits news content, blocks certain content, and uses a function called auto change to alter news service stories to fit the agenda of the hate group it serves. Well. They got caught big time yesterday by rewriting an AP headline on their website. It read "Homosexual eases into 100 Final at Olympic Trials". The actual AP headline was "Gay eases into 100 Final at Olympic Trials". The story was about sprinter Tyson Gay, brilliant 25 year old sprinter who ran a 9.68 100 meter race on Sunday. It's the fastest time ever, but, the wind was over the limit to count it as a record. Onenewsnow changed his name from Tyson Gay to Tyson Homosexual. To my knowledge (and it's really none of my business, anyway) Gay is not gay. That didn't matter to Onenewsnow, though. Their auto change function clearly shows the bias and invective that groups like this inject into the debate about individual rights. Apparently, they think that "homosexual" is more inflammatory to their readers than "gay". The AFA took the story down after the laser beam was put on their website exposing their biased altering of the news. Luckily Right Wing Watch got a screen grab of it before it was removed. This group, run by right wingnut Don Wildmon, who has had a perpetual campaign against the entertainment industry for 30 years, is on the fringe pushing its narrow religious agenda. At the same time they lecture all of us about how we should live our lives, they use dishonest practices to push their view of life. Nice.

This clown Bob Cavnar is a blogger on the Houston Chronicle. He really thinks he has the goods on the American Family Association b/c they refuse to acknowledge the homosexual agenda and refuse to let the co-opt the word "gay".

Apparently the AFA sends out news clips and they always change "gay" to "homosexual" when they do so.

I say good for them.

The "scandal" that Bobbie thinks he caught them is that apparently there was a sprinter yesterday named "Gay" who set a record in the 100 meters. The AFA changed his name in the headline to "Homosexual." LOL!

I guess the AFA is guilty of not being very good at proofreading, but Bobbie is wetting his depends with indignation and spouting that this is evidence that they are a "hate group."

The point being, if you go to the original blog post at the Chronicle, and register, then you will have the privilege of leaving Bobbie and his no doubt, er, "happy" followers a comment!

Enjoy!

Blogger. He could use an editor who might insist on a less biased headline. Without reading the content of the article, I find it far fetched to believe that there isn’t SOME “alteration” of the news that could not also be blogged about from Obama, to Media Matters, to Dan Rather, to the Houston Chronicle...

Isn't homosexual the politically correct term anyway?

They were stupid in not reviewing what they changed. Poor Mr. Tyson Homosexual will never live that one down with his friends.

It read "Homosexual eases into 100 Final at Olympic Trials". The actual AP headline was "Gay eases into 100 Final at Olympic Trials".

THIS got his panties in a bunch?

Headlines are changed by editors all the time, just go to news.google.com and enter a line of text from a wire story.

And the two terms are used interchangeably (see the term "style guide") but the term used by this organization is actually the more accurate term.

The novelist Brammer wrote a terrific novel based on LBJ and Texas politics which he entitled, from a poem by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “The Gay Place.” Neither he nor Fitzgerald ever suspected that the word “gay” would be co-opted by the homosexual agendists. They made his life miserable and drove him, a very talented man, to suicide. No haters, they, just because they would torment a man for using the word in its original meaning as held for hundreds of years.

If I was that sprinter I might take exception to having that headline altered. Gay is his family name and there’s nothing short of changing it legally that he can do about it.

Gay is not gay

Reminds me of some autoreplace feature that CNN used to employ and resulted in some article being read on air with a similar error ("neighbor" was to be used instead of "foreigner", "african-american" instead of "black", etc.).

A bunch of dairy products. Cheese and whine.

Didn’t some left wing news group get busted doing the same thing to “Pro-Life”? IIRC it was something like a politician with the last name of “Life”. When a story came out about people supporting him being pro “Life” voters, the news agency changed the mans name to anti-abortion. LOL I guess when its a lib doing it its ok.

This isn’t a case of what the critic claims it is. The group wasn’t “altering the news,” just using an auto-edit tool to replace the word “gay” with “homosexual” in a case where the change was embarrassigly inappropriate. When the group realized the change was inappropriate, they removed it.

Whoopdie do. They have an automated script that changes “gay” to “homosexual”. If this dude cared to look it up, this isn’t new. When “gay” was considered slang, a lot of papers had an automated editor. One paper reporting on the Enola Gay (the nuke dropping aircraft from WW2) changed every reference to the plane to “Enola Homosexual”... and ran it.

This guy needs a panty-unwadder.

So it would automatically change any reference to “the Gay ‘90’s” to “the homosexual ‘90’s”
Gay Paree would be Homosexual Paree
Mavin Gaye would be Marvin Homosexual
The Enola Gay would be the Enola Homosexual.
Nice automated system they have there.

I notice that in Bobbie’s profile he doesn’t say much about a wife or kids......

Sounds like if he ever makes a headline, I wonder if he might be subjected to the AFA’s “hate” rule where he would NOT be described as “gay”?

I have this theory. It says that anyone who gets truly upset about the treatment of gays is probably doing it for personal reasons. That has always turned out to be my experience. Yes, I have known wayyyy too many liberals who were sympathetic to the gay agenda. But none of them gave it much more than lip service. Heterosexual liberals don’t get TOO worked up about the gay agenda. But when you see a liberal get REALLY worked up, in my experience, that is a sign.

It’s not politically correct to discuss that. Instead, we are supposed to think that everyone is at equal risk of AIDS. We’re not supposed to think about how diseases are spread, just supposed to have compassion for those who get diseases. And while we’re at it, attack George W. Bush for not doing enough to fight AIDS and other diseases.

It is however dishonest to refer to homosexual as “gay”.

And you have to be rabid to call an organization “dishonest” because they made an error with a name.

This just happened because they decided to automate an RSS feed into their internet headline system rather than use an actual human being to generate original content (or at least screen the syndicated content).

So it's really just laziness and bad internet planning on the part of the AFA.

If true, (even though this looks more like a stupid mistake rather than an intentional distortion), what would make the group in question any different than ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, the NYT, the WP, Reuters or the AP? To MSM, lying is only fashionable and ethical when it’s on behalf of the cause.

I don't think it is the point of the columnist is to calling this group a vicious hate group because they were making fun of someone's name.

Instead, the columnist was saying anyone insisting on using the proper term for homosexuality instead of the PC version is guilty of hate-mongering. It is unfortunate the editor did not correct the obvious error in altering this particular headline, but I think it is a laudable goal to insist on proper usage. Our dear columnist thinks I am, therefore, a hate monger.
