President Bush will soon decide whether to close Guantanamo Bay as a prison for al-Qaeda suspects, sources tell ABC News. High-level discussions among top advisers have escalated in the past week, with the most senior administration officials in continuous talks about the future of the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay--and how it will be dramatically changed and/or closed in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling that gave detainees there access to federal courts.
Sources have confirmed that President Bush is expected to be briefed on these pressing GTMO issues--and may reach a decision on the future of the naval base as a prison for al Qaeda suspects--before he leaves for the G8 on Saturday. An announcement, however, is not expected before he leaves the country.
High-level administration officials say the Court's decision dramatically changes the legal landscape--and raises questions about whether the government has solid evidence to present to federal judges to justify ongoing detentions.
That evidence, much of it classified and obtained by military and CIA personnel on the battlefield, is not the standard kind of proof judges are accustomed to seeing in regular criminal cases here, administration officials say. The documents do not contain the kind of detailor include sources of that informationthats typical in criminal cases, sources say.
Late last month for example, a federal appeals court in Washington said the government failed to prove its case with one detainee from China. The administration fears that's a sign of things to comein light of the Supreme Courts ruling giving other detainees even broader habeas corpus rights to challenge their detentions in court, sources tell ABC News.

FWIW, The chairman of the JCS wants it closed too.
Why not just ‘release’ them all into the ocean? They’re on an island, fer Pete’s Sake. Let ‘em swim back to their homeland!
(I know. I’m so mean.) ;)
He should and release every damn one of them into districts controlled by Democrats. Anfd give them a hunting knife as they go out the door.
JCS ?
Same idea....release em from 12,000 feet MSL !
Probably best to close the whole Gitmo can of worms before the election and air drop all the current residents in Northern Pakistan.
“Why not just release them all into the ocean? “
I’d suggest - release half of ‘em in San Francisco and the other half in Boston.
Joint Chiefs of Staff
Just do a mild refit on one of the old ships laid up in the ex-Philadelphia Navy Yard, pack all these scum on board, then have it towed around in circles in the mid-Atlantic.
President “Appease the Liberals” Bush will close Guantanamo so the liberals will like him after his term ends next January.
I love it! BIG SMILE
Creep supreme court judges, will allow these animals protection under US law with the help of the Liberal skunks in congress and the ACLU. What a mess! Are we alone out here? Have we given up on America?
Send them to Poland and Slovenia.
They love kicking them around. (or so I have read)
“Why not just release them all into the ocean? Theyre on an island, fer Petes Sake. Let em swim back to their homeland!”
It’s a good plan. If Allah intends for them to survive the swim, so be it. Only 98 miles to Haiti...... Not the most benign current in the slot.......
I would hang ten a day until they were all gone.
Is there going to be anything to cheer about this year?
Evidently not.
You ARE mean, Diana. A catapult would get them there so much faster!
I don’t know the practical military aspects of the debate over the usefullness of Gitmo, but close it, and on the PR side, it will be seen by the left and their mouthpieces in the MSM as an admission that whatever happened there was somehow wrong or shameful.
I can hear the MSM commentators now talking about how Bush only years later recognized the “mistake” and is close this “shameful chapter.”
If it is a necessity, then keep it open and explain clearly why it is needed.
March them into Congress and release them.
Bush just needs to do whatever McCain wants.
In a perverse sort of way, sticking some of those guys in the tougher cells of Leavenworth might be a real eye opener for the terrorists. I can just hear the lefty bed wetters whining even more about the difficult conditions in a maximum security prison, where looking over your shoulder and gang affiliation are a way of life.
“In a perverse sort of way, sticking some of those guys in the tougher cells of Leavenworth”
bringing these terrorist to America would be a security NIGHTMARE! Plus the ACLU would be there ASAP trying to do all they could to get them b...a...i...l and all the rights of an American citizen!
They’re exactly where they need to be before they are tried, convicted and executed!
next...
Electric bleachers—solve it in one pull.
I forgot to mention, that we already have 300K foreigners incarcerated in prisons throughout America now.
And we’re starting to deport them as we speak.
There is absolutely no reason why Americans should have to pay to incarcerate other countries’ criminals; especially when we have hundreds of thousands of AMERICAN criminals who should be behind bars!!!
Well McCain wants to move the terrorists from Gitmo to Leavenworth...lets hope & pray that McCain changes his mind on that issue too!
Why not just release them all into the ocean? Theyre on an island, fer Petes Sake. Let em swim back to their homeland!
(I know. Im so mean.) ;)
sources tell ABC news. Hmm, what sources? I think the whole article is baloney
With the SC meddling, the place might as well be closed. And no further prisoners should be taken. They will only cost billions more in legal expenses and clog up the court system. We will probably have to figure out how to fight our wars with proxy troops in the future as this Habeas Corpus ruling now subjects all of our troops’ actions to judicial second guessing and just about requires that every troop clear every act with a lawyer before he pulls the trigger or grestrains a suspected enemy. Habeas Corpus in war applied to the enemy has huge and probably crippling and ultimately fatal ramifications for the existence of the United States.”The Constitution is not a suicide pact,” but the Supreme court’s word is. The other two branches have surrendered their partnership in the government to the judges.
This ruling will work its way into the field in Iraq and Afghanistan. Foreigners on foreign soil under the control of the US military must be treated as American citizens in Poughkeepsie. That means trials and convictions for “excessive use of force,” and the whole panoply of domestic law. Ultimately every shot fired in Iraq must give rise to a Trial in a Court. The USSC decision seems less obnoxious than that but the ACLU is not involved yet but is surely working feverishly on it and the 9th Circus is not involved yet.
They would merge right into the Moslem gang there.
I think Bush should make the announcement that each prisoner there has been extremely helpful in providing us intelligence to prosecute the WOT, so in exchange for their cooperation, we are releasing them back to their country. We will give detailed press releases to Al Jezera on the names of each prisoner (all of them) that were most cooperative.
Release them into the tender mercies of Cuba just like Castro did to us.
