I want more taxes, and so should you (Chicago has highest sales tax in the US)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 7/3/08 | Eric Zorn

Posted on 07/03/2008 7:58:57 AM PDT by redstates4ever

The nagging voice of doubt is trying to talk me out of writing this column:

You want to call for more sales taxes in Illinois? The very week Cook County residents are reeling and seething over the latest hike?

Yes, more sales taxes.

And what good has it done for Chicago? The government wants more tax money to keep the people broke and dependant on them. They don’t need the money, they just need to keep you broke. Think about it, the more money you have the less control they have over you.

Funny. The Chicago Tribune whines about having the highest taxes in the USA but wants to repeal the Second Amendment.

I think Eric Zorn can pay any taxes he wants. In fact, I think there should be a special surtax on liberals, since they’re the people who want ever bigger government. Therefore, it’s only fair that they pay a bigger share of the burden.

Jusat wait until they have to pay 27% (tax inclusive~!!)

No, no no.

That’s not the case.

Liberals only want OTHER people to pay more in taxes. It does not matter who the OTHER people are as long as it is not whoever you are talking to.

This guy's theory is that if Illinois taxes services as well as sales, the tax rate can go down and the revenue will be the same.

If this guy really believes that the gov't would actually lower the tax rate after broadening its reach, he's either a moron, a liar, or most probably both.

This idea is only a good one in the context of significant other tax relief and reforms, such as sales-tax credits for lower and middle-income families.

Fine. Put the tax relief in place first and then we'll talk.

Who's "the dreamer" now?

The state of Illinois has some of the highest sales and gas taxes in the nation. The dims are responsible for the lion’s share of it, while the gutless republicans nary offer a peep of protest in return.

Springfield has to have an adult conversation about how to cut spending not how to expand the reach of the sales tax.

Many years ago, as I recall, the city was embarrassed when they went to get bids for the fleet of city cars. The winning bid was from a dealer in the suburbs of Chicago, rather than a dealer in the city of Chicago.

The city contracted with the suburban dealer for the fleet of cars. And the reason for the better pricing from the suburban dealer was because, then as now, the city had a higher sales tax rate than the suburbs. And multiply the difference in the tax rate times a big quantity of an expensive purchase such as cars, and it made a big difference in the price.

So the city government had a black eye for not supporting its own city businesses in that case.

“A broader tax base would share the burden more evenly and, theoretically, keep rates down while keeping government revenue the same.”

Of course, that assumes a world without Democrats. Not in Illinois, I think.
