Sen. John Warner, R-Va. Suggests National Speed Limit

Influential Republican senator, John Warner of Virginia, suggested on Thursday that Congress consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline.
Sen. John Warner, R-Va., asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to investigate what speed limit would provide optimum gasoline efficiency given current technology. Warner said he wants to know if the administration might support efforts in Congress to require a lower speed limit.
In 1974, Congress set a national 55 mph speed limit because of energy shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. The speed limit was repealed in 1995 when crude oil dipped to $17 a barrel and gasoline cost $1.10 a gallon.
As motorists headed on trips for this Fourth of July weekend, gasoline averaged $4.10 a gallon nationwide with oil hovering around $145 a barrel.
Warner cited studies that showed the 55 mph speed limit saved 167,000 barrels of oil a day, or 2 percent of the country's highway fuel consumption, while avoiding up to 4,000 traffic deaths a year.
Warner asked the department to determine at what speeds vehicles would be most fuel efficient, how much fuel savings would be achieved, and whether it would be reasonable to assume there would be a reduction in prices at the pump if the speed limit were lowered.

One would have thought that being wiped out in the midterm 2006 Congressional elections or Bush having an approval rating of 23% would have taught a lesson on big govt GOP stupidity. Guess we’ll have to wait for the coming annihilation of GOP 2008 officeholders for them to return to their small govt roots.

We should get this data, then make a decision about what to do with it. I seems unlikely to me that 55 is the optimum.

98% of Auto’s and 99% of Semi’s were driving the speed limit or less.
This has to hurting the cash cow for speeding tickets.

This is actually a good idea. We should get this data, then make a decision about what to do with it. I seems unlikely to me that 55 is the optimum. I don't believe the Constitution gives the feds the power to regulate such things (except by an expansive reading of the commerce clause).
Beyond that, the problem is that the "data" the government produces tends to support whatever scheme will increase its power and reach.

okay, here we go. A blast to the past. I expect this to have strong support. And as before, they will say that it not only conserves gas, but also will save lives as everyone drives at a slower speed.
With a Democrat congress, this idea could be something they want to push. Bush may veto, and if that happens, they will wait for “President Obama” next year to sign such legislation.
To: ellery
I lived through this $hit with the carter years, and knowing that we are dying from gas prices because the wusses in Congress won't stand up to the girlie-environuts makes it even harder to take now.
Again, I reiterate NO INCUMBENTS RE-elect no one...especially attorneys, the most self-serving profession in Congress.
It's going to take something like this to wake them up to which side their bread is buttered on.

We have NO need for a national speed limit. The present 65 MPH limit is good enough.Dropping it down to 55 won’t save that much fuel so its a waste of time.
Sen.Warner needs to retire. His time is up.I’m sick of these people in the Republican party who would rather quit than fight against the actions the democrats are taking to harm my country.

The Virginia GOP put up Jim Gilmore against the other Warner: Mark Warner. At the same time, they rejected a real conservative: Bob Marshall. The other Warner is really popular and will likely win.

You have got the underlying basis for this suggestion. The feds personally eat up so much of the tax revenues with their nonsense that the states don’t get what they want to eat up with their own nonsense. This is a “cash cow” for the states to tax us with fines for violating some silly lowered speed limit.

Plenty of other variables. I can take my ranger (v6 model) on the highway and get 28 mpg doing 80. Stop-and-go traffic takes FAR more gas than speeding.

Well Jeepers Sleepy Eye’d Johnny if you think it is your place to tell us how fast to drive then you can tell us what to drive. A straight shift gets better gas mileage than an automatic and the difference is far greater than that saved by speed limits. But Sleepy Eye’d is actually only interested in having more nap time being driven to his Napping couch in the senate chambers.

I suggest a national speed limit of “however fast you can afford to go”, on interstate highways.
I don’t need a nanny protecting me from wrecking my car and I certainly don’t need a nanny telling me how much gas I can afford.
On a side note, as I left work yesterday I was all happy about a 3-day weekend so I opened the vette up and left a 50 yard long cloud of tire smoke. Suck on some of that warnergore.
