New Push To Prevent Gas Gouging At Illinois Pumps
Reporting Dorothy Tucker
Jul 3, 2008 6:27 pm US/Central
CHICAGO (CBS) With the price of gas well over $4 a gallon, consumers want every drop they pay for.
But sometimes Pamela Smith wondered if the gas was flowing when she was pumping.
"While I'm pumping the nozzle is clicking and it's going on and off and I'm not certain if the gas is going into the vehicle," Smith said.
She is among the hundreds who have registered their concerns with the state. The state has had 700 complaints since January, compared to 500 in all of 2006.
"So it's clear that consumers are feeling the pain at the pump and they're feeling in some places local gas station is not giving every penny that they're paying for," Gov. Rod Blagojevich said.
To try and protect the public, the governor is increasing the number of inspectors who monitor gas stations from 13 to 18. Those inspectors make sure the quantity is accurate and if you choose premium you actually get premium.
And to make sure you don't get ripped off, "when you take the nozzle off, if you see anything rolling on there, money wise or gallon wise, hang it up," state inspector Bob Pankala said.
And when you stop pumping, check and make sure the numbers have also stopped running.

Contact your Congress critters to let them know that you are tired of high gas prices.
If you try to fill your tank too fast, the automatic overflow protection kicks in.
I don’t know I have an 18 gallon gas tank...I stopped to fill my car while I had a quarter tank...the pump said I put in 18.3 gallons....before $4 gas I never paid attention to the amount of gas that I pump..just filled it up...now I wounder just how long I and God knows how many others pay for more gas then the actually get .
You do have to be careful, because there are definitely dishonest creeps out there who are a lot like the old butcher who would put his thumb on the scale. However, generally it’s simply because - well, the price of gas is too high, and will be until we start drilling.
Lots of “reporting” going on to keep the sheeple distracted, but precious little about what is actually going on (i.e. supplies constrained by Democrat policies, excessive taxation).
The “George Bush Pump Company” is at fault!!
That’s why they used to say (and probably still do) to buy gas five gallons at a time. The inspectors usually fill five gallon containers.
Yep!
The gov wouldn't think about rolling back the gas tax.
My best friend went to the reservation to buy gas last summer. Drove in with a pickup having a 22 gallon tank and bought 23-1/2 gallons of gas. Is there such thing as an indian gallon?
When pumping your gas, pause your fillup at 10.0 gallons even. The price shown should equal 10 times the posted per gallon price. Example: Gas is $4.29. Therefore 10 gallons X $4.29 = $42.90. This price should match the price you should see on the pump. If there is any difference, then the pump is off.
If you pay with nickles - yes.
If I was worried I wasn’t getting enough gas, I’d fill up my 5 gallon gas can to make sure.
That seems logical.
Let's just say you're a sucker mom with two screaming 'ME generation' brats in the back seat. The blue tooth earpiece is ringing off the hook because both your so-called husband and present lover are attempting phone tag. Your credit card accounts are topped off so you really aren't sure this transaction will go through.
Do you really stop and calculate?
So - you would NAIL 5 gallons every time? What if you actually pumped 4.85 gallons? You still wouldn't know. Kinda looks like 5 - but isn't. I blame Pelosi.
I’ve had the same car for years. I always fill up at a quarter of a tank and I’ve seen no change in the amount it takes to fill up. I purchase gas at several different stations.
I ain’t selling my Honda Pilot for a stupid smart car like Chicken Little. The bottom will fall out soon
Isn't that some sort of pen?
I have a mark on the gas tank where 5 gallons is. You can fill up the tank with water using a cleaned out milk gallon jug. Then make the mark. You’re set.
Yeah you can write in space and under boiling water
I had a gas pump tell me I’d bought more than my tank capacity several years back. I live in Illinois and contacted the state....they sent me paperwork that basically required me to pay to have them check out the pump. Needless to say, I never bothered returning it.
Ah, bureaucracy and a bill - Thank you Illinois!
Set? You betcha. I work for a living. I buy things. I assume the package contents are correct. If a store bought pizza has one less pepperoni slice, I don't get too excited. While pumping gas, looking at the state trooper photo reminding me that I'll be behind bars for stealing petrol, I fill up and go.
I rely on the GOVERNMENT CALIBRATED gas pumps to deliver...
Gouging = free market.
They ain’t gonna sell it for $10/gallon if nobody buys it.
The five gallon mark isn't usually where the problem is at. The closer you get to five, the more accurate the pump may be. I've seen where digital pumps can be programed to be way low on three gallons or so, but when you start getting closer to five, the pump will start pumping more to catch back up. Supposedly, the closer you get to ten gallons is the same way.
I sure hope I’m missing the sarcasm in your post cuz all I can think of is how the Govt. took care of NOLA during Katrina. LOL Trust but verify....someone famous said this. :D
I see official GOVERNMENT inspection stickers on the pump. I see a GOVERNMENT photo of some sucker dressed in a Highway Patrol uniform reminding me of prison time. I'm fully aware about the GOVERNMENT taxes that are being collected.
Now, the GOVERNMENT is telling me that there's GOUGING? Is it possible?
Are you related to Seinfeld?
There IS a such think as a gas hose to the tank!
lol
Nope. Don't recalculate. But too loaded to recaluclate right now. Hope you had a Happy Fourth, L.
“The George Bush Pump Company is at fault!!”
I’m just willing to bet that only one company makes these pumps, and that they give generous donations to the republicans! :)
Doesn’t do you much good if you only top off three gallons.
Hunting RATS? (Let me know when you bag one!)
Hey, I don’t give a crap what you do or not. I was just making a suggestion that IF YOU ARE WORRIED, you can take steps to try to verify your five gallons is five gallons. Sheesh, pal, enjoy the 4th.
Besides, the impression I got from the person I was responding to was that they were being shorted a lot more gas than just 15 cents worth.
It's the 5th.
[Drove in with a pickup having a 22 gallon tank and bought 23-1/2 gallons of gas.]
My Nissan advertises a 13 gal. tank but has always, when on “E”, held ~ 14.5. Gas tank size in NOT exact standard measure.
I’m waiting for them to switch to liters to make the price look smaller.
Oh yeah. Go after the little guys. Divert blame where possible from the over taxing and the environmentalist stranglehold on domestic production.
Gee Thanks!
Yep yep yeppers!
The ones at GasMart are robbing us of a few bucks. The ones in Washington are robbing us of thousands!
This whole approach to the mindset that we're getting screwed by somebody somewhere down the oil food chain is ridiculous. These franchise gas stations have calibrated pumps. Period. They have to. Now you might be snookered by Billy Bob's Gas & Go in the middle of nowhere, but even that's a stretch.
Gas stations and oil companies are not screwing you. It's called the U.S. Congress. I have to put up with this at work. Thanks for the wonderful memories, L. :-)
You're welcome - I think. (Any hard feelings - please keep them to yourself - eh?)
No hard feelings. Just made me think of the gas price debate that went on far too long the other day. More than one was thoroughly conviced someone was sticking it to us.
My reply: “Yes, Congress.”
:-)
I and many others add to that, much more sugar alcohol, electric cars, and natural gas....pay alot less and have a cleaner burning car. Gasoline competition will see the price drop dramatically!
