Save the Children claim G8 preparing to cut aid to Africa

Leaders of the world's most powerful industrialised countries - the G8 - are preparing to ditch promises of extra aid for Africa putting millions of lives at risk, according to a charity.

Save the Children claims leaked documents show G8 leaders meeting in Japan (July 7-9) are planning aid cuts when Africa's poor have been left even more vulnerable by global food shortages and spiralling prices.

Meeting in Gleneagles in 2005 at a summit hosted by Tony Blair, the G8 leaders agreed a comprehensive plan to support Africa's progress and pledged to double aid for Africa by 2010. Aid for all developing countries would increase by around $50bn per year by 2010 with at least $25bn extra per year for Africa.

But Save the Children claims the G8 appears ready to drop its aid promises. It warned the cost of living had risen by 83 per cent since Gleneagles and the G8 needed to wake up to the emergency threatening the lives of millions of children.

Adrian Lovett, director of campaigns at Save the Children said: "If the G8 wants to betray the hopes of a generation of children, it is going the right way about it. The food crisis is an emergency and the G8 must treat it as that. Going back on aid promises now is like cutting emergency assistance in the aftermath of the Tsunami. The G8 should be increasing aid spent on malnourished children in light of the rising price of food, not cutting back."

He added: "World Bank figures show up to 105 million people have been pushed into absolute poverty as a direct result of rising food prices. Seven years of progress have been reversed. Malnutrition is responsible for one-third of the 10m t children's lives lost every year.

It takes a jackass like Robert Mugabe to turn a breadbasket like Zimbabwe into an utter hellhole.

Save the Children: biggest rip-off artists I have ever seen!

My residence in West Africa was within walking distance from STC headquarters. They held the most lavish parties I have even seen; yet, not even once, we saw them helping the children or doing anything at all for them.
When we question their tactics, we were told that those children were beyond help and were begging for the imams.

We believe that all funds to these greedy bastards should stop.

We stopped giving funds to STC and all the other “charitable organizations”; the only one that was helping destitutes were the catholic charities. (I’m not catholic nor a missionary, but must give them credit for what they are doing in Africa)

Actually in West Africa, AIDS problem is fairly low (2-5%) USAID and Amembassy give thousands of (male and female) condoms free of charge, which are promply re-sold to tourists.
AIDS funds, like everything else in that part of the world, doesn’t trickle down to the people. It is usually the politicians that keep it and distribute it among themselves; unfortunately our gov’t is also too busy having a grand time instead of veryfing how assistance is dispensed.

No, I never heard of Feed the Children foundation; the one I’m referring to is “Save the Children”.

I’m certain that there are many charitable and honest foundations; but what I saw in Africa, left me and my family very disillusioned.
