Afraid of what sect might do
Denver Post ^ | 7/11/08 | Susan Greene

Posted on 07/13/2008 8:34:52 PM PDT by Saundra Duffy

Custer County's sheriff is taking a stand.

"We don't want them here," Fred Jobe says of the polygamists who quietly are settling onto his turf. "I just don't want them to think they're gonna move in and take over the county."

As Jobe tells it, followers of Warren Jeffs' Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have moved into four compounds in Custer County and two in Fremont County. The extent of their influx into south-central Colorado is unclear because few outsiders have been let inside the sect's secrecy fences.

Many locals are wondering why they don't see frumpy-frocked women, their octogenarian husbands and broods of children in town.

"Why don't we run into them in the grocery store, the post office? Why don't they support our businesses?" asks Jane Thomas, who lives yards from a compound near Westcliffe.

Gettin' ready to tar and feather, run out of town on a rail, persecute, starve, and simply do whatever they can to eliminate the FLDS from the face of the earth.

If this doesn't scare you half to death, nothing will. They even admit it's a witch-hunt. The poor FLDS children are in for it unless the Constitution is allowed to protect them.

“With rapt applause from her audience, she went further by mocking the religion, which she likens to the Taliban, and deriding its minions as unChristian followers of polygamous Old Testament Jews. “

Ouch. Do I detect a bit of antisemitism here? Please read the entire article to see that the journalist is somewhat shocked.

I am studying for a CLEP test for U.S. History since 1865 to the present and I came across an interesting bit of history. These well meaning do-gooders (you know holier-than-thou) got a bright idea on how to deal with the “Indian problem”. They rounded up ALL the children on the reservations and dumped them in White run boarding schools. Wouldn’t allow them to speak their language or practice any of their Indian ways; destroyed their culture; made them dress like white Americans; cut their hair; separated the kids from their families. No exceptions. Many of the kids suffered tremendously, if not all. They used to do the same thing to deaf, deaf/blind, blind children. All in the name of Christian good works.

It just reminded of what is happening to the FLDS right here in my America.

My husband is a native american and he personally is quite glad that they rounded them up and educated and mainstreamed his ancestors. He is quite thankful that he lives in a HOUSE and not a wigwam AND he really likes his car and other “WHITE” amnities.

I am comfortable in my own home in Fresno, thank you very much and I have never met an FLDS. However, if I ever did meet an FLDS human being face to face, I would not spit in their face and try to run them out of town. I would apologize for the way they have been treated in my America.

Do you have proof to back up that claim?

On the other hand, we DO have proof that the TX CPS held adult women against their will and stood gaping as two adult women gave birth. This is called false imprisonment.

I don't know when arranged marriages and rape of underaged girls suddenly became "family values."

The other thing that is ignored is that the M.O. of the FDLS is to have one public wife and the rest resides as single mothers. Those single moms then enroll in every form of public assistance they can qualify for.

Wow! The native Americans who are undisturbed on their own land today and who have fought for and gained self-determination will most definitely disagree with you. And if a bunch of federal/state authorities tried to invade their territory and round up all their children at gunpoint, there’d be heck to pay.

I am fascinated by some of these responses . . . in my America.

Not true. Before the raid and round-up, the FLDS were self sufficient on the ranch. They had gardens, a dairy, chickens, etc. Now, however, since many of the FLDS are afraid to go home due to fear of CPS, they are forced to rent apts and houses and go on public assistance. Are you happy now?

At the prodding of an anti-FLDS group called Step Up, Thomas and nearly 200 locals crammed into Custer County Middle School's gym Thursday to learn about their new neighbors from a woman who escaped from a similar sect.

So someone from a anti-flds group is following them around and stirring up stuff and she is from a similar sect not this bunch.

I wonder how much someone like this was behind the mess in Texas. Could a bunch like this or this bunch be where the gal in Colorado got her info.

There is something wrong with ex FLDS getting rich off of book sales and TX CPS and law enforcement using their books as templates to condemn and prosecute an entire community. Furthermore, we are individuals and according to the Constitution are to be treated as individuals with due process. The Constitution used to mean something.

Thanks for your post. (Can you believe some of these pro raid, pro round-up comments, from FReepers no less?)

When they came for the bikers, I didn’t rise up because I can’t shift gears on a motorcycle.

When they came for the Catholics, I didn’t rise up because they would never give me communion.

When they came for the FDLS people, I didn’t rise up because I was happy with one wife.

When they came for homosexuals, I didn’t rise up because I never understood them.

When they came for the protesters, I didn’t rise up because they went too far anyway.

When they came for the liberals, I didn’t rise up except to applaud.

When they came for the libertarians, I didn’t rise up because Ron Paul is a nutbag.

When they came for the lawyers, I didn’t rise up because lawyers are all scum.

Then they came for my guns, and there was nobody left to rise up with me.

I have been aware of this cult for many years. I firmly believe it does great harm to women and children...both boys, because they are forced out, and girls, who are expected/forced to become another ‘wife’ to an old man.

In the past, they have existed in the shadows but they seem to be expanding. They have been careful to keep stay within the letter of the law.

I would like to see some heavy duty investigative reporting done on the cult's finances. They are getting their money from somewhere...and they seem to have a lot more money than they used to five or ten years ago. Where is all the money coming from? The women don't hold jobs...and darn few of the men do. And each of the men is supporting several women and lots of kids. I can see how they could be self-supporting. What I don't see is where they are getting the money to buy new property. It just does not compute.

I can't blame the folks in Custer Country for not welcoming the FLDS to the neighborhood. I would not want them as neighbors either.

Did you read the wild accusations

The wild stories with very little or no basis in fact seems to abound about this group

If they are doing something illegal arrest them and charge them but even in the Texas thing there are no charges yet we keep hearing how any day but so far nope.

More and more the Texas thing looks like short creek +50 years the problem then as now the state went crazy and in the end had nothing to justify the extent they went to.

If they want to punish the guilty they have to go after them one at a time as individuals not try to demonetize the whole bunch.

That is what they did with jeffs and he is now where he belongs now go after the others who have broke the law as individuals and leave the kids and women alone.

Have you looked at the Bishop's List recently?

Nephi Jeffs lived at YFZ with 8 of his 14 "wives". 22 of his minor children live there, where are the other 2?

Leroy Steed brought 3 of his wives to the ranch but 4 are still in Short Creek with 7 of the 24 minor children.

Keith Dutson, 46, brought his 3 youngest "wives" (17, 21 and 22) to Texas but left the 2 older ones in Short Creek. He also left 12 of his 14 children there.

Lehi Allred came to the ranch with his 16 year old "wife" but left the other 2 "wives" and all 3 children in Short Creek.

Michael Emack, 56 brought along his 19 year old "wife" and his 18 month old son left 3 "wives" and 10 children in Short Creek.

Abram Jeffs left 3 of his 5 "wives" in Short Creek, along with 4 of his 9 children.

Lloyd Barlow left all of his 4 "wives" and all of his 15 children in Short Creek.

Edmund Allred brought 2 "wives" and 7 children to the ranch. He left 6 "wives" and 29 children in Hildale.

David Johnson went to the ranch alone. He left his wife and 2 children in Short Creek.

Paul Allred also went to the ranch without his family. He left 2 "wives" and and 3 sons in Colorado City.

Jacob Jessop and Fred Lindsey each left a wife in Short Creek.

Don Jessop was also travelling solo, leaving behind 2 "wives" and 2 children.

Richard Barlow left his 2 "wives" and 13 children in Short Creek.

Edson Jessop left his 5 "wives" and 45 children in Short Creek.

Do you think those left behind are self-sufficient or on public assistance?

There was a New Zealand newspaper story on their finances. They have construction businesses, some heavy equipment work, and have businesses with US government contracts here and there. They apparently own some pretty successful businesses. The info is out there.

Sure it's understandable. Unfortunately you can't just run people out that you don't prefer. They have the same rights and protections, both civil and property, as any other United States citizens. Your best bet in these cases is to substitute the words "United States citizen" for whatever group is involved and see how it sounds and what precedents it will set.

I think I am agreement with you. I think people should be allowed to live like they want to. Still, they are a cult, but I don’t think that fact should rule out their right to live how they wish.

There are other cults in our country that are allowed to exist and this cult should be allowed to live as they wish. In my own life, I prefer freedom. I have studied the Mormon cult and this is just an off shoot and I am well acquainted with many Mormons and we discuss their cult in compairison with Christianity and we still get along just fine.

Mitt Romney made me a little nervous, though, because all these folk believe they can become gods and now even the women tell me they can become goddesses and that would have made it so Mitt could have become the first president to become a god. That would be a little wierd to me.

If anyone wishes to read up on this stuff they can read Kingdom of the Cults or The Maze of Mormonism by Dr. Walter R. Martin.

Cult or not, I say they should be free to live how they wish.

”. They rounded up ALL the children on the reservations and dumped them in White run boarding schools.

You should look into the LDS Placement Program. (hint: it was before your time 1947 to 1996). It was a dismal failure because they did the same things ie: Wouldn’t allow them to speak their language or practice any of their Indian ways; destroyed their culture; made them dress like white Americans; cut their hair; separated the kids from their families.
