A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 7-18-08
WhiteHouse.gov & other sources ^ | 7-18-08

Posted on 07/18/2008 5:39:51 PM PDT by silent_jonny

President Bush spent the night in Tucson, Arizona where he arrived late yesterday evening after touring the areas effected by the wildfires in California.

This morning, the President participated in a fundraiser for Congressional candidate Tim Bee before boarding Air Force One.

Arriving in Houston, Texas this afternoon, President Bush spoke on behalf of another Congressional candidate Pete Olson at Ellington Field. (Transcript)

No doubt in my mind Pete Olson will make a fine United States congressman and I'm proud to be here to support him.

The President attended a private fundraiser for Olson late this afternoon. From there the President traveled on to his home in Crawford, Texas where he and Mrs. Bush will be staying this weekend.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice held a news conference with Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci today at the State Department.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates also welcomed the Kosovo leaders to the Pentagon today. And this afternoon he attended the funeral of Dr. Michael DeBakey at Arlington National Cemetary.

Quote of the Day:

President Bush: (speaking on behalf of Congressional candidate Pete Olson in Houston, Texas)

Our country faces some big issues, one of which is to make sure we defend our homeland against cold-blooded killers … Got to make sure we keep our taxes low. And one thing is for certain: We need to explore for more oil and gas here at home. People are worried about the high gasoline prices. One way to take the pressure off gasoline prices is to make it clear that the United States is going to be active about finding crude oil and natural gas right here in our own hemisphere, our own country.

Was Dr. DeBakey in the military, or does he get a spot at Arlington because he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal?

Anyone know?

President Bush, right, pauses during a statement with Pete Olson, a Republican challenger in the 22nd district of Texas, left, after arriving at Ellington Field Friday, July 18, 2008 in Houston, Texas.

President Bush: It sure is good to be back in Houston, Texas. I am -- I've come back to help Pete Olson win the congressional seat in the 22nd congressional district. I'm proud to support him. He's a Rice University graduate; he went to the University of Texas Law School; Navy fighter pilot; proud father, loyal husband and a smart guy.

Our country faces some big issues, one of which is to make sure we defend our homeland against cold-blooded killers; I'm convinced [Pete] Olson understands that. Got to make sure we keep our taxes low. And one thing is for certain: We need to explore for more oil and gas here at home. People are worried about the high gasoline prices. One way to take the pressure off gasoline prices is to make it clear that the United States is going to be active about finding crude oil and natural gas right here in our own hemisphere, our own country. And I'm convinced we can do so in environmentally friendly ways.

No doubt in my mind Pete Olson will make a fine United States congressman and I'm proud to be here to support him.

Yes he did

“From 1942 to 1946, he was on military leave as a member of the Surgical Consultants’ Division in the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army, and in 1945 he became its Director and received the U. S. Army Legion of Merit. He helped develop the mobile army surgical hospital (MASH) units and later helped establish the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center Research System”

MUST, MUST READ . . .

LET IT SNOW
Kingly virtue on display in our nation’s capital.
By Kathryn Jean Lopez

Washington, D.C. — Tony Snow was remembered as “a man of uncommon decency and compassion” by President George W. Bush at his funeral Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on the campus of the Catholic University of America on a picture-perfect July Thursday morning this week.

The president said it in tribute to Snow, his former press secretary, but he also set an underlying theme for the send-off for Tony: “Why so uncommon?” Call it “Tony’s challenge.”

Say what you will about the president, he is a man of faith who speaks with an obvious sincerity when he declares, as he did Thursday:

I know it’s hard to make sense of today. It is impossible to fully comprehend why such a good and vital man was taken from us so soon. But these are the great mysteries of life — and Tony knew as well as anyone that they’re not ours to unveil.

Bush said it like a man who, with a cautious optimism and a deep yearning, ultimately looks forward not simply to more time in Crawford, but after that, to the full revelation of those mysteries come his Judgment day. The president’s words demonstrate an awareness of his place — even as the leader of the free world — in Creation. And yes, that is somewhat uncommon — at least with consistency and confidence — in our pop culture.

Bush speaks as a man, who, amidst our cultural muddle, would know what do to with David’s charge to Solomon from Kings (1 2:1-3).

When David’s time to die drew near, he charged Solomon, his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord, your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statues, his commandments, his ordinances and his testimonies.”

Yesterday I made the trip to DC to attend Tony Snow’s funeral and was very glad that I did. It is hard to find the right words to describe it. On the thread about the funeral someone has posted links to a .pdf of the program; also links to the homily by the President of Catholic U and by President Bush.

The Shrine is magnificient. Security was present but very respectful and polite, guiding mourners to an entrance on the north side of the church. Everyone passed through a security inspection before entering the building.

I sat near the back, as a late arrival — I was in my car almost at the church when police put yellow tape across the road to block it off for the President’s motorcade. I thought I would probably miss the funeral, so settled down (with my motor turned off - no excess AC for me) to enjoy seeing a motorcade up close.

After it went by, I managed to get into the parking lot and then into the church before the funeral started. Seeing the children walking with their mother was really heart-wrenching. They were so composed, under such a trying situation.

President Bush spoke first, and I could see him very clearly at a podium . He did not go up into the pulpit. But I could not see where he was seated during the service.

The Mass was a normal as a Mass with about 15 concelebrants could be. The homily by the President of Catholic U was so personal and wonderful.

I don’t know if the soloist and the cantor were the same person, but she had a really professional exquisite voice. After Communion a choir sang with such skill, they reminded me of English Cathedral Choirs. My musical knowledge is minimal, but the piece “Sing me to Heaven” was classical and magnificient. The second choral piece “Promised Land” had a hint of negro spiritual, and had the most beautiful soprano soloist. I did not know until later that the soloist had been Kendall Snow.

It was obvious in what high esteem everyone there held Tony Snow.

Honoring someone for their life as they pass from this world is something worth sharing with all who knew the person. Dr DeBakey was such a pioneer in medicine, his name should be as widely known as those of our astronauts or other explorers.
