Next time you step on a glob of tar on a beach in Santa Barbara County, you can thank the oil companies that it isn't a bigger glob.

Bump your favorite freeper, this is valuable information for any and all of our arsenals.
bttt!
Hey, given how closely tied the energy ordeal is to global warming and environmentalism, how about giving this a bump too?
:-)
It sounds to me like there could be an ocean of oil beneath the surface, that would explain the pressure differences that they are describing.
Yeah, I was thinking that too. Knowledge of natural seeps is nothing new. native americans and other historical peoples have long been going to various beaches where this phenomena occur and using said tarballs to seal their boats to make them float better.
But I can’t get over that. A university........ in california........ actually put those words together.
“thank the oil companies”
I could choke if I had some drink right now. :-P

But the NATURAL oil seeps are NATURAL. They are supposed to be there because they are NATURAL. So when the oil companies do something that reduces NATURAL seeps, that’s bad. really really bad.
Thanks alot big oil! You’re ruining the planet’s NATURAL oil seeps! Trillions and trillions of micro-organisms will probably go extinct without their NATURAL oil seeps.
Yep. Gotta drill and pump that oil to stop that Globull warming
LOLOL
I can’t wait to see some enviro make that argument.
What’s with the joseph newman reference?
The thing is, this is just plain old fashioned common sense. Something the envirowhackos and their lib enablers are sorely lacking.
nancy pelosi, free our oil!
More oil flows into the oceans of the world via natural seeps than exists tanker capacity to transport.
Everything in Santa Barbara runs, at least, a decade off the mark!
BTTT
Saving the environment one barrel at a time.
This is amazing coming from that tabernacle of uber-Green religion, UCSB! Santa Barbara is where Al Gore goes to worship. I hope and pray Luyendyk still has a job.
I've posted much the same thing here several times since I live near the Channel Islands and have observed the oil slicks and tarring of the beaches for many years. Several times when landing at Santa Barbara Airport I've seen oil slicks in the Channel extending for many miles each way. It only seems logical that relieving both oil and gas pressure by drilling would lessen natural seepage. But I'm amazed at the amount of methane seeping out!
You've found a very important document and I've saved both the link and a hard copy. I hope many others do the same and use the info effectively.
Considering HOW HIGH a gallon of gasoline is in California...I think it’s understandable.
Wonder how long before these scientists are fired??
Pray for W and Our Troops
Thanks to Big Oil, I can no longer find tar to patch my canoe!
Bookmark for later.
I didn’t read the article but when I was growing up (before the oil platforms at the Channel Islands, Seal Beach, and the oil island at Long Beach you couldn’t go to any beach in So. California withiutgetting covered with tar.
It used yo be so bad that the beach at Golita was totally unusable and the Spanish used to beach their ships there to tar the bottoms.
Clear into the late 60s there was an oil slick all the way to Mexico from natural seepage of thousands of barrels a day.
The oil wells have relieved the gas pressure so that there is only a small amount being pushedoit now.
bump!!
How do you get Feinstein, Boxer, Pelosi, and the stupid Austrian to read this?

Contact your Congress critters to let them know that you are tired of high gas prices.
Natural seepage is why you have the La Brea Tar Pits in downtown Las Angeles...oil is lighter than water and sand, after all...so it naturally rises to the surface when it finds a fissure.
Oil drilling/production relieves that natural pressure. It’s an *environmental* case for new oil drilling.
It’s not that. They were *ahead* of everybody in 1999. The problem is that anything that doesn’t fit the liberal media’s agenda doesn’t get reported.
This is an inconvenient truth for the media.
I’m glad you found it useful. Hopefully others will too.
The information itself is merely common sense/knowledge, but the fact that UCSB did this, and it isn’t oil company funded is what makes it so powerful.
haha, thats yet another fantastic link. Thanks for sharing.
Oh, and to Bernard..... Read this guy’s link. Apparently Luyendyk still has his job. :-P
Yep. Between natural seeps and the fact that offshore oil rigs serve as a dual purpose artificial reef, this is a great argument for us to make.
They’re great for the environment. They can even withstand hurricanes as strong as hurricane katrina.(there were no oil spills when it came through the gulf area)
But let us not stick inconvenient facts into the Erdgeist religious atmosphere of the MSM.
What a great mental picture......
Oil & Gas Operators at the FOREFRONT of Environmental Relief
They'll pay attention when it is profitable for their sponsors for them to do so.
I doubt facts or logic will prevail against the anti-drilling Big Lie being spun here in CA (especially in Santa Barbara County!) But it's nice to have an independent UCSB study to cite to the Green folks locally who refuse to see the elephant in their parlor.
Not for nothing but this is a DUH story.
I remember seeing Newman 20 some years ago on Morton Downey Jr. Show. He was a nut then and he still is! Still can’t prove his miracle engine works!
Not just the ocean, we'd have tar and oil seeping up all over had we not "relieved the pressure" generally all over the past century or so.
They hide behind the premise of the line in the WHO song We won't get Fooled Again
"The Hypnotized never lie",/i>
Yes, I realize this was a no brainer. The difference is now you have an article/study from a liberal college university to point to.

If they were truly environmentalists instead of “commies with cover”,
they might make that argument.
