Democrats being Democrats
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | July 20, 2008 | Editorial

Posted on 07/20/2008 5:43:26 PM PDT by Graybeard58

With scant weeks to go before the curtain rises on the $41 million Democratic National Convention in Denver, planners find themselves millions in the hole. It's not difficult to see why.

Renovating the convention hall at the Pepsi Center already has cost $6 million more than they budgeted, and the work is far from done.

In renting offices, the party took top-shelf space in downtown Denver at $100,000 a month, only to discover it needed only half the space, and then filled the offices with rented furniture costing $50,000 a month.

A small fortune was spent to make this a "green convention," but 47 state delegations have balked at the additional expense.

The Democrats can't find enough caterers because the 28-page food contract micromanages menu choices to the point where each meal, not counting garnishes, must be organically and locally grown and have "at least three of the following five colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple and white."

At last count, convention revenues were $11 million behind expenses, and that doesn't account for cost overruns. The New York Times blamed the fiascos on party leaders who "spent too freely, planned too slowly and underestimated actual costs." Spending has been so profligate that even Sen. Barack Obama's operatives are wondering where all the money has gone.

For their part, party leaders through a spokesman said, "We are exactly where we intended to be at."

And if convention fund-raising ultimately comes up short, they'll stick Sen. Obama with the tab; after all, he has hundreds of millions in his campaign treasury.

Come to think of it, isn't this the way the Democrats govern? They dream big, then underestimate costs, then overspend. And when the time comes to pay the bills, they "soak the rich."

What about the other 10 states? :)

Heh. I hope they stick Obama with the tab! These idiots can't run a convention but they're asking us to believe they can run the country but they can't even pass the gas price relief the American people is demanding - drill more, pay less!

They should have hired professionals who know how to manage things. Dems should stick to what they are good at... being victims.

‘We are exactly where we intended to be at’

Anyone have any similar news on the Republican convention?

Assuming it is on-time, on budget, etc... it would make a great story in contrasts.

Just 1 minor edit to this otherwise accurate description.

I hope Obama refuses to pay. These people need to learn a thing or two about fiscal responsibility, preferably the hard way. A bailout will teach them nothing.

Reminds me of when I attended my first Ronald Reagan Dinner at CPAC five years ago. The dinner wine was Charles Shaw AKA “two buck chuck”, what we call it here in California. It's $2 a bottle at Trader Joes.

I commented to my dinner companions that we must be at a Conservative gathering, because liberals would serve the most expensive wine money could buy.

Sitting next to me was an Assistant Secretary of the Army who informed me that the wine is called “three buck chuck” in Virginia because of the excessive liquor taxes. The people at the table got a chuckle out of the conversation.

The real irony is that I believe we can take them at their word here.

IIRC, Romney managed the only Olympics in recent history to come in under budget. IIRC, his wasn't the smallest budget, but his was the smallest final total expenditure.

It's amazing how truthful liberals can be, when they figure (correctly) that almost nobody will think about what they're actually saying.

It would be interesting to see the balance sheets. I wonder how many of these pol self-importants burn through all this money with $50 lunches, and $100 dinners.

Of course I’m not surprised. They can’t make a plan; can’t make a budget, etc. etc.

By the time they get through the convention, the approval rating of the 110th congress just may be down around 5%. Now, not only is the congressional budget a fiasco, but their own party’s “budget” is as well.

They don’t budget — they just track expenses. Big difference!

if these people lose the presidency and seats in congress, there won’t be enough psyciatrists in the universe to maintain their psychotic orientation.

if they win, there won’t be enough counselors for the rest of us to cope with their insane desire to be in control of everyone and everything and to be the new gods of the universe.

it’s going to be a wild ride with these psychotic swine either in power or out of it. (preferably out)

IMHO
