Woman Like Terri Schiavo Denied Food, Water for Nine Days; Hearing Today
Life News ^ | 7/23/08 | Steven Ertelt

Fresno, CA (LifeNews.com) -- A California court is scheduled to hold a hearing today in a case of a disabled woman like Terri Schiavo who has been deprived of food and water for nine days. Janet Rivera lost her right to food and water on July 14 when a court-appointed guardian removed her feeding tube despite her family's wishes.

Rivera, 46, had a heart attack on February 2006 and she never regained consciousness. She has been on life support for two years

Jesus Rivera, her husband, had been his wife's conservator until June 17, when he was replaced for unknown reasons by David Hadden, the Fresno County coroner.

Jesus, according to a Fresno Bee report, wants to allow his wife to continue to receive food and water and has wants "her body to give out when it gives out between her and almighty God and no one else."

"You can't starve someone to death," he said.

Doctors disagreed and, after consulting them, Hadden decided to remove Janet Rivera's feeding tube.

According to the newspaper, Hadden's office released a statement saying he made the decision after "immense consideration" and due to Rivera's "untreatable and irreversible condition and to prevent any and all suffering that she may be enduring."

"If this were a family member of mine, I would want the decision made by the group of physicians who are taking care of this patient," he added.

In a hearing today at Fresno County Probate Court, the family will request a restraining order to allow Janet food and water until a full hearing can take place.

Rivera's family has contacted two pro-life law firms, the Alliance Defense Fund and the Life Legal Defense Fund to help them with the case and Brian Chavez-Ochoa, a Valley Springs attorney, is helping the family at no cost.

Chavez-Ochoa was an advisor in the Terri Schiavo case.

Rivera is currently admitted at the DeWitt Community Subacute Center in Fresno.

And they still have the audacity to claim that there is no culture of death!

“If this were a family member of mine, I would want the decision made by the group of physicians who are taking care of this patient,” he added.

Right. A group of physicians should decide. That worked out real well for the Germans too a few decades back. Maybe they can keep detailed records of how long it takes her to starve and they can call it “research”.

I wonder if they have tried Ambien? There was an article on FR yesterday about it being used to wake people up. Apparently it's helped to somewhat bring a guy out of a vegetative state.

“Pro-Life Ping”

Though I don't know the specifics on this woman's mental capacity or whether she can recover somewhat this case reminds of the Schiavo fiasco. So called Pro-Lifers lost quite a bit of credibility when they came out so ferverent against pulling Schiavo’s plug. There was no reason to keep that woman in a system that cost tens of thousands of dollars a year for dozens of years. That would be stupid and socially suicidal and most importantly, SELFISH. To let a person drain resources from people that need them is ridiculous and defies common sense. The Pro-Lifers blew the Schiavo case because they didn't focus on the true travesty of the issue and the stupidity of the medical system. If the girl would have been properly rehabilitated she would have been able to walk and chew her own food while her brain wouldn't have gone to complete mush. The girl doesnt get enough rehab and because of that shes a vegetable and we fork up thousands of dollars to keep these people alive.

That was the travesty, not that a lifeless brain was aloud to pass.

I notice that you joined Free Republic YESTERDAY, so maybe you were under the impression that this is a pro-death forum -- you would be WRONG.

There was no reason to keep that woman in a system that cost tens of thousands of dollars a year for dozens of years.

Terri's estranged, adulterous and abusive spent MORE MONEY KILLING HER than a feeding tube would have cost for the remainder of her life.

To let a person drain resources from people that need them is ridiculous and defies common sense. . . The girl doesnt get enough rehab and because of that shes a vegetable and we fork up thousands of dollars to keep these people alive.

You will be pleased to know that you are not the first person to make this argument:

This person suffering from hereditary defects costs the people 60,000 Reichmarks during his lifetime. People, that is your money. Read ‘New People’.

You would not have needed to fork out any money to keep Terri alive. Germany offered to take care of her at no cost.

In 1993 Theresa Schindler-Schiavo’s Medical Rehabilitation Trust Account held over $761,000, this was HER MONEY AND HERS ALONE.

A feeding tube costs over $30,000 per year including medical procedures, Terri’s family was willing to care for her at home. The interest alone would pay for this.

Maybe you have FORGOTTEN something about the Schiavo case.

Terri did NOT get the rehabilitation she needed, because her “loving, faithful husband” did NOT want her to improve—he just wanted her to DIE.

I guess I am one of those “pro-lifers” who as you say, “lost a lot of credibility” in 2005 over the schiavo case. I do NOT know how you can come to such a conclusion like that—It would seem to ME that “pro-lifers” would “lose credibility IF we had said “PULL THE PLUG” As YOU wanted—and got .

I just wonder—if it was YOU—would YOU want a CORONER to decide when YOU should be caused to die of thirst??

Read my poem.. maybe it will make you think a bit.

Remember THREE things:: (1--this woman is NOT "terminally ill, and suffering, or unable to swallow on her own. we are NOT talking about IV feeding or a "breathing machine"..

(2--the husband and FAMILY do NOT want her to die--the DOCTOR and CORONER feel they can decide her fate!!

(3--First they came for the Jews....

Its not just Terri, we’re talking about the principle of the issue. A principle that “Pro-Lifers” have defended with no flexibility. When Terri’s autopsy was done, there was little brain function and her body was found to be acting like a resource consuming machine with absolutely no mental comprehension. If she was properly rehabilitated and her brain didn’t go to mush then pulling the plug would have been murder, but thats not the case.

you know - you really ought to read up on your subject matter prior to spewing such ignorant garbage among people who followed this case closely for many years.

Because you are addressing people who are well aware of the fact that Terri was awarded a substantial amount of money for the purpose of her basic care and rehabilitation.

Why don’t you take some time, do a little research, and then come back and try again?

Exactly, we ARE inflexible when it comes to the taking of innocent life.

When Terri’s autopsy was done, there was little brain function and her body was found to be acting like a resource consuming machine with absolutely no mental comprehension.

FALSE!

Please explain how she experienced "euphoria" if she had no brain function. If she was properly rehabilitated and her brain didn’t go to mush then pulling the plug would have been murder, but thats not the case.

You are half right, her estranged, abusive and adulterous "husband" spent over a $500,000 of HER MONEY killing her, this money was SPECIFICALLY for rehabilitation.

However, there was no "plug" to pull. She was starved and dehydrated to death, YOU wouldn't have fared any better after 13 days without food and water.

I didn’t forget about the details, I accused the husband of the ultimate offense. He was an evil man for not using that trust fund to properly rehabilitate Terri so that she could walk, eat on her own and possibly keep the mind of a 4 year old. Because of his neglect, her mind went to mush. Maybe because of this scenario Terri should have been kept alive, but from the way Pro-Lifers put it all cases like this are murder and there is no exception.

Since you are brand new here you might not be aware that Free Republic is a PRO-LIFE CONSERVATIVE forum and, just like the woman in this article the owner of Free Republic also lives in Fresno, California and he is also disabled.

When he was in the VA hospital a couple months ago should they have simply concluded that it would cost the taxpayers "tens of thousands of dollars a year" to care for him?

OK, so you must know more than many doctors who disagree?
Such as this one?

http://codeblueblog.blogs.com/codeblueblog/2005/03/csi_medblogs_co.html

“Doctors approve of this method in extreme cases like Terri’s “

There are doctors who approve of late term abortions and even infanticide.
Your point?

“it doesn’t take a doctor to see the huge black space! “

Tell me what you see, why you think it deserves your characterization of “mush”, and why you think it justifies dehydrating someone to death.

“You think this is a big conspiracy or something?”

I think it is a matter of getting rid of people who have become inconvenient.
A utilitarian view of human life.

PVS is misdiagnosed 40-45% of the time.
It is a subjective diagnosis that experts themselves cannot agree on criteria.
Recent developments show the experts know less about the brain than previously thought.
Studies using functional MRIs indicate more brain activity than previously thought.

There are many who want to assume they know everything in order to justify exterminating the helpless.

Your post lacks the ‘segmental number’ for each picture hence you may be deceiving readers with a segment on the left which shows more of the ventricle than the one on the right ... which can vary greatly depending upon the ‘verticle segment’ being displayed. But then you already knew that and went ahead with your ploy anyway.

Doctors approve of this method in extreme cases

Please point out the passage that suggests that it is acceptable to deny a person food and water:

I swear by Apollo Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfil according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:

To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art - if they desire to learn it - without fee and covenant; to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken an oath according to the medical law, but no one else.

I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.

I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.

Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.

What I may see or hear in the course of the treatment or even outside of the treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread abroad, I will keep to myself, holding such things shameful to be spoken about.

If I fulfil this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot.

I think abortion is horrendous after the formation of the Central Nervous System, otherwise a fetus is only a parasite-like body thats DNA is sequenced for it to grow a certain way when provided nutrients.
