McCain Should Say No to Mitt

Political reporters have long been obsessed with conflict between presidential candidates and their running mates, at least since the days of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.
That's probably one reason why McCain's joke in Detroit last week that Mitt Romney was "doing a better job for me than he did for himself" sparked a wave of news stories speculating that McCain was seriously considering, for the vice-presidential slot, his bitter rival turned loyal surrogate.
But while choosing Romney to be his running mate would make Washington journalists happy, it would be nothing short of political suicide for McCain.

Me too. As I said in another post somewhere, Mitt could be a mighty swing of electors, esp in Massachusetts and other surrounding states.

I can’t believe that Senator McCain (our next President) would consider Romney for a second. Far too many votes alienated if that happened). I sure hope Jindal would say yes....or S. Palin........or Rudy.

What? That is utterly ridiculous. The worse thing McCain can do is choose a no name.
Mitt brings economic genius to the table, and he is an articulate bulldog. He can bring it on home.

Romney would destroy our chances, by eliminating one of our biggest advantages: fear of Obama the Muslim. By putting a Mormon on the ticket, McCain would cancel out the Muslim factor.

You have to play your hand with the cards you are dealt.
Right now Romney and Jindhal are McCain’s best hope.
As for Romney signing an assault rifle ban, Jorge El Segundo said he would sign one if it came across his desk.

Mormon as VP candidate isn’t nearly as harmful as Muslim as Pres candidate. Not even close.
However there is no “Muslim Factor” in the minds of most voters certainly the not the blue-collar whites whom Obama may have trouble with, they don’t read rumors on right-of-center websites. And Obama is not a muslim (he worships the god he sees looking back at him in the mirror).

I posted this on another thread, fits here too. This guy who wrote the article is just plain wrong, for the following reasons:
Romney will bring some western states, Utah, obviously, also Colorado, perhaps Nevada, states with a reasonably large Mormon population in particular. Plus of course Michigan, maybe Massachusetts, and possibly other Midwestern rustbelt states. Plus, Romney would be ready to go to take over if McCain were to fall ill or worse. Hes not so young as to be a glaring contrast with McCain, but looks young so would be the perfect age to match with McCain, not too young and not too old, and in great shape.
Plus, of course, there is his fiscal expertise and business background. Then there is the money he would bring to the ticket (his own), plus his great fundraising capabilities, and mailing lists from which to solicit campaign funds. Romney has already been out in all the states fundraising since the primary ended and McCain won. He’s been a good soldier and has already raised megabucks for McCain. He’s getting the fundraising in for McCain before the general election federal campaign financing kicks in, limiting McCain’s ability to raise funds. Romney is already doing yeoman’s duty bringing in the bucks.
All around, McCain would be a fool not to pick up on such obvious advantages by picking Romney. Plus, Romney is a known item, fully vetted, lovely family, etc. Pretty wife. Rumor has it that Cindy McCain and Mitt’s wife have bonded bigtime, which, believe me, will influence McCain. He knows its a good thing if the wives get along. No skeletons in the closet. And Romney is a good debater. No moss grows on him and hes not afraid to attack (as McCain will attest). Romney would aid McCain on domestic issues, which would allow McCain to concentrate more on what he really wants to deal with which is foreign affairs matters. Also, Romney makes very few verbal gaffs when dealing with the press.
If McCain chooses a lesser known person for VP, then there is a long learning about them curve, longer than the time left in the campaign to do a thorough job of introduction. No one knows who the heck Pawlenty is, except for politico types like we Freepers are. Same with Jindhal, Sanford, etc. No name recognition, and not enough time left for them to become a well known name. McCain needs a heavy hitter, not an unknown to the public. Also, George Bush Sr. likes and wants Romney, and McCain has been visiting w/GB Sr. just recently, and at other times in the near past. Plus Karl Rove wants Romney in there, as well as George Bush the Younger. So, we should know in the not too far future, but just from my political instincts and logic and for all of the above stated reasons, I believe McCain would be a fool not to choose Romney. But, McCain is a maverick, isnt he, and it could be someone no one is even thinking about. Well find out sooner than later.
To: Category Four
I am in NH and Mitt is a loser here and in MA. Fact RomneyCare is $150 million in the hole. Mitt is anti
2nd Amendment, pro abortion, pro homo etc. McCain will lose big time with a Liberal VP.

His best other choices are Fred (in Tennessee, which seems pretty safe for the GOP), and Duncan (little to no name recognition, and the Cali media won't give him a leg up, that's for sure). Or is there someone else I haven't thought of.

Buckley was never liberal. And it doesn’t matter if he’s died or not.
That doesn’t dampen his support of Mitt when he was live.
Rove is no liberal. Tom Tancredo is a credible Conservative.
And you didn’t even talk about the others...
To: Dog Gone
I don’t either.
It’s just dumb rhetoric.
Mormons aren’t going around chopping people’s heads off and flying planes into buildings.
Mormons are peaceful. Why would anybody fear them.

Take a look, for balance, at both the American Spectator and Dick Morris' column today actually said.
"But while choosing Romney to be his running mate would make Washington journalists happy,
it would be nothing short of political suicide for McCain."
[McCain Should Say No to Mitt; The American Spectator 2008-07-24]
"Despite outspending his rivals by huge margins throughout the primaries,
(Romney) lost Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and California.
The only primaries he won were in Michigan, where Dad was governor; LDS states;
and a few states on Super Tuesday in which his California-obsessed rivals
couldn't spare the cash to advertise.
Only John Connolly in 1968 had a worse cash-to-delegates ratio.
And John McCain rightly did not like Romney's tactics during the primaries.
(W)hen (Romney's early leads) started slipping away, he resorted to unfair,
distorted, scorched-earth negative ads, betting that his opponents couldn't
afford to spend enough for the truth to catch up to his charges."
