Obama's path to presidency is far from clear
Los Angeles Times ^ | july 25, 2008 | Peter Nicholas

Fresh polls show that he has been unable to convert weeks of extensive media coverage into a widened lead. And some prominent Democrats whose support could boost his campaign are still not enthusiastic about his candidacy.

Several new surveys show that Obama is in a tight race or even losing ground to Republican John McCain, both nationally and in two important swing states, Colorado and Minnesota. One new poll offered a possible explanation for his troubles: A minority of voters see Obama as a familiar figure with whom they can identify.

Many voters still seem to be puzzling over who Obama is, even after a race that has lasted a year and a half. By 58% to 47%, voters identity more with the values and background of McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, than with Obama, according to a newly released Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.

The Dog Trainer doesn't really have a clue! As I'm Patterico will no doubt soon tell us, they don't know why, despite months of adoring coverage from them and the rest of the MSM, the American people reject Obama!

I smell MSM panic coming on!

WSJ poll results

30% approve of the job Bush is doing, 64% disapprove.
15% approve of the job Congress is doing, 76% disapprove.

Issues rated by voters as highest priority: 23% economy, 20% energy and cost of gas, 12% Iraq war.

This one, however is a sad commentary about the voters:

Q. 8. I'm going to read you two statements about the role of government, and I'd like to know which one comes closer to your point of view.

Statement A: Government should do more to solve problems and help meet the needs of people, OR

Statement B: Government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals.

53% chose A, the government shoudl do more. People are becoming more and more like sheep -- want to government to take care of them, not realizing that they want government to control their lives, voting for slavery, not freedon.

The recent FoxNews poll shows 75% of the people support offshore drilling, 56% support drilling in ANWR, 64% are against rationing, 82% are against raising gas taxes.

You know they've given him the kind of coverage that Hitler, Stalin and Gorbachev could only dream of and they haven't been able to change the opinion of the American people about their favored candidate. I'm beginning to think the CW about this being a Democratic year is wrong. We're seeing the first signs of a Democratic collapse and Obama is going to be a drag down the rest of their ticket. And I think Republican losses are going to be smaller than people have predicted. The MSM is going to be stunned this November. I don't think the Left in this country understands the ground is shifting rapidly beneath them and by the time they do get it, it will be too late.

Americans always would like government to take care of them - as long as they don't have to pay for it. The Democrats know its easier to promise a lot of things that can buy votes but its harder to convince people they should pay more to have those things the Dems want to give them.

They are puzzling over who he is because he gained the nomination by laying low and not exposing himself. Then they heard about his far left moonbat positions, then his attempt to run to the middle, and now in Germany his kumbaya, we are the world, global citizenship. No wonder nobody knows him. There is no one inside to know.

I am just reading through the details of the poll.

It is interesting that 58% feel McCain has a set of values they can identify with, only 47% can identify with Obama’s values (Q. 17, page 17 of the poll) , yet Obama is still leading McCain in this poll by 47% to 41%, but I think McCain could gain momentum. President Obama is NOT inevitable.

Bush is still twice as popular as Congress - to the disconsternation of the Left. They've tried everything to destroy his Presidency and they can't turn it to their political advantage. If Bush was unpopular as the polls say, there's no way John McCain should be even this year and yet he's gained ground in enough swing states to secure a lead. The CW says that's not supposed to be happening but it is and we're missing something here.

The Obama lead is surely an outlier as its contradicted by all the other evidence. People don't vote on sentiment: they vote on their values and with their pocketbooks. Obama is riding high due to sentiment but its as about as far as he'll go and the pendulum is now swinging back and the MSM can't figure out why he isn't ahead by double digits! For what its worth, I don't think he'll get a bounce out of the Democratic Convention.

The more Obama talks, the more he will reveal himself as being at odds with the mainstream of thought in this country. No amount of flip flops, clever camouflage and artful doubletalk can hide the fact that he's a leftist. The American people are not liking what they see.

His polls were higher when little was known about him. The "extensive coverage" has only torn down the façade, revealing how inept and dangerous he would be as president.

In other words, the MSM strategery has backfired by showing the American people too much of Obama. The smart thing to have done was to minimize his exposure. A liberal cannot survive prolonged contact with reality.

It seems that people see McCain as a "maverick" thanks to years of the MSM portraying him so because it helped THEM attack Bush.

They've been telling us for years that McCain is nothing like Bush...and we believe them.

Don't forget, McCain was OUT last year--we were talking here like all that was left to do was withdraw from the race.

Obama isn't inevitable. Nothing in politics is inevitable. And why are we still trusting polls, after having been burned so many times?

Americans want someone different from Bush, and they're satisfied that they're going to get that no matter who wins in November, so they don't see Obama as the only choice for there to be change.

As for us, after all we've seen of Obama, is there a thinking conservative who can't see the importance of supporting McCain against this guy when so much--our soldiers' lives (Al Qaeda would have their own surge going with Obama's election giving them hope), our taxes, abortion, SCOTUS--is at stake?

That's the beauty of a Presidential campaign. Get the candidates to talk enough and attend enough events and no matter how well scripted, the real candidate begins to leak out; like Obama blowing off a visit to the troops in Germany but having enough time for a workout in the gym at the Ritz.

As Krauthammer so aptly put it, the question is quickly morphing from "Who is Obama?" to "Who does he think he is?"

All this European adulation will not sit well with the average Joe, especially since he hasn't even actually been named the Democratic candidate.

“He can go be President Of The World! We need an American President, not someone who panders to people who can’t stand the sight of us! “

Absolutely. The voters polled seem to feel the same way.

32. When it comes to re-establishing America’s image abroad, there are two viewpoints concerning what would be
better to re-establish America’s image in other countries.

Please tell me which one you agree with more.

Viewpoint A: We need a president who will present an image that America has a more open approach and is
willing to negotiate with friends and foes alike.

Viewpoint B: We need a president who will present an image of strength that shows America’s willingness to
confront our enemies and stand up for our principles.

Viewpoint B/image of strength ........................................ 50%

I don't think its that. I think Obama embodies two traits in a human being people find very unsettling: arrogance and then there's being a complete jerk. And people don't like those things in a potential President. This is guy who couldn't even take the time to thank his country, his President and his own wife before giving his speech. No - its really all about HIM!

Obama is Jimmy Carter without the Southern manners and sense of earnestness. It brings to mind the old true and trite saying: You can't fool every one. And Obama isn't successfully accomplishing that task and the MSM is just beside itself. The Messiah should be doing a heck of a lot better at this point in the campaign! Hadn't they just pulled out all the stops to make McCain a nobody, or in the language of Orwell's 1984 , an unperson? Big Brother should be overwhelmingly popular and Goldstein history's forgotten traitor.

If you looked at the Issues as an American How could you ever think that this was a Democrat year,The reason that statement was ever mentioned was because THE DEMOCRATS SAY it is a Democrat year.
I want our country protected from terrorists, Democrats dont ,I dont want to pay 4.50 or 8.50 for gas ,Democrats do ,I want to go to The doctor I want to, not the Government Doctor ,Democrats want to force me to go to theirs, I want to keep my thermostat where I want it ,not OBOMBO,I want to eat what I want and drive what I want ,not Obombo. Im am proud of my country,I am a Vietnam Veteran ,I served my Country what Has Obombo done to qualify him to be leader of the Free world ?
What sane person can say this is a Democrat year ? Just because Obombo and the DEMOCRATS say it is does not make it so

Keep in mind those are the code words of the left.

“Citizen of the World.”

For all their whining and complaining about America’s Imperial Agenda, they neglect or discount or worse don’t understand what it means to be a “Citizen.”

In order to accomplish that goal they have had to create a global crisis. Well they have succeeded in creating two. Global Warming and now Oil. Both have been created into secular religious sins against the planet and the “citizen.”

Earlier this week I posted an article or news release from a Global Political Party. We have long discounted them here in the United States, but they are gaining ground around the world. Their charter specifically talks about being the ‘global citizen.’ They are not some non-profit group somewhere talking about world peace. They are actively working to infiltrate governments around the globe with their agenda for the 21st Century. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2049859/posts

The nomination is lost to her for this year and, while Obama may make small mistakes, there will be no real stumble. That being said, the Hildabeast & Bubba are working behind the scenes to torpedo Obama’s candidacy in Nov. Count on in. In 2012, she will only be 64 and itching to run again. She won’t be able to do that if Obama is in the White House. By 2016, she will be 68 and there will be few FOBs left in the DNC or MSM.

It is surprising that Obama isn’t getting more of a bounce from all this media coverage. It could well be that the more people see, the less they like. Also, I have always though Obama would have to be up more than 5% in the polls to actually win. Two reasons for this:
1. Many whites, especially older ones, will lie to pollsters about their choice to avoid appearing racist.
2. His support is very strong among the young, but many young people won’t bother to vote.

"’The walls between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down,’ Obama told the warmly enthusiastic crowd in Tiergarten park.”

I’m sure the imagery was powerful all right, but did anybody bother to notice that if these ”walls” “cannot stand” we don’t need Obama to tear them down?

The powerful imagery is also evocative of the powerful imagery of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi extravaganzas, which were also received warmly by enthusiastic crowds.

Let’s hope American voters are not as susceptable to charismatic, messianic leaders (fuhrer, auf Deutsch) as Europeans are and that Obama’s European spectacle will be received in America about like the Wellstone Funerally and Hitler's Nazi rallies were.

Europeans would re-elect Hitler today, if he came packaged as a rock star. Let's hope Americans are less acquiescent and less easily lead and less influenced by powerful imagery.

I sure hope not. I just wish we had a better nominee than we have. McCain is about as inspiring as a box of rocks. Of all the elections, I believe this is the most important one and we have the absolute worst candidate and the dems have the absolute best one for what they stand for, which is all show and no substance. Its all about emotion with them and they have one who knows how to touch their emotions. God help us.

I wrote this somewhere else, but DeVos did at one point in the gubernatorial election have the same lead Obama does now. Then Granholm somehow managed to get elected.

Obama had a lot of momentum initially, but like DeVos it will end up tapering off.

It is surprising that Obama isn’t getting more of a bounce from all this media coverage. +++++++++++++++++ I think it is a backlash against the MSM. I, for one, don't like anyone or anything crammed down my throat. The MSM conduct has been outrageous and so obvious. At least they used to deny their bias, asking "what agenda?" Now they've thrown off the covers and make no pretenses. MSM is dying before our eyes and what's sad is that they don't seem to have a clue as to why the American people won't buy it. Obama should be miles ahead of McCain by now, considering everything. The American people aren't as stupid as the MSM thinks.
