Two articles in one post discussing the Berlin speech.
This Is the Moment And now we are loved again?
Its America, Obama
A modest dissent to the citizen of the world
July 24, 2008
Given the size of the audience in Berlin Thursday, the enthusiastic response, and the standard lines about how we-were-, -are-, and -will-be-friends boilerplate, one wonders whether all it took to win the Euro-hearts and minds was to have a charismatic, multiracial American spice up a standard George W. Bush speech about helping the world, addressing AIDs, more troops in Afghanistan, etc.?
So supposedly sophisticated Europeans, who constantly dissect American politics and culture, seem suddenly to like us now, because a younger, more mellifluous figure repackaged the standard American trans-Atlantic rah-rah speech, dressed up with a little Obama messianic sermonizing: People of Berlin people of the world this is our moment. This is our time! along with some throwaway lines about global warming and Darfur?
Thats all it took?
A few minutes of Obamas Elvis-like hope and change? And now the Europeans will pour troops into Afghanistan, match our AIDs-relief dollars, stand up to Iran, be balanced in the Middle East, get off our backs about Iraq, and stiffen their spines with the Russians, because the days of Bushitler are by fiat over with?
Besides the usual rock-star stuff that he excels at, Obama still does not do history well. He started, as in now usual, almost immediately by mentioning his race (I know that I dont look like the Americans whove previously spoken in this great city.) But that simply was not true, given the fact that for the last seven years both American Secretaries of State who have been the faces of American foreign policy in Europe were African-American.
His reference to why Berlin did not starve in 1948 (But in the darkest hours, the people of Berlin kept the flame of hope burning. The people of Berlin refused to give up. And on one fall day, hundreds of thousands of Berliners came here, to the Tiergarten, and heard the citys mayor implore the world not to give up on freedom.) seems somewhat misleading: the city was kept alive not by the world or even the courage of the hungry Berliners, but by skill and courage of the U.S. Air Force.
Three conclusions:
One, the public spectacle was of enormous political value to Obama, given the vast press coverage and the enthusiastic crowds.
Two, pundits will probably praise and then forget the speech in the same manner they did his embarrassing I can no more disown Rev. Wright . . . race sermon which they once compared to the Gettsyburg Address before quietly deleting it.
Three, I doubt aping the European line about U.S. torture, global warming, Darfur, etc. will result in any more NATO troops to Afghanistan, or anything else forthcoming from Europe. As it is, they want less, not more, military spending; their extra-constitutional anti-terror laws, spy-cameras, and preventive detentions make the Patriot Act look like Cub Scout bylaws; and their new anti-immigration protocols would earn calls of fascism if enacted here at home

What disturbed me about Barack Obama's Berlin speech were some reoccurring utopian assumptions about cause and effect namely, that bad things happen almost as if by accident, and are to be addressed by faceless, universal forces of good will.
Unlike Obama, I would not speak to anyone as a fellow citizen of the world, but only as an ordinary American who wishes to do his best for the world, but with a much-appreciated American identity, and rather less with a commonality indistinguishable from those poor souls trapped in the Sudan, North Korea, Cuba, or Iran. Take away all particular national identity and we are empty shells mouthing mere platitudes, who believe in little and commit to even less. In this regard, postmodern, post-national Europe is not quite the ideal, but a warning of how good intentions can run amuck. Ask the dead of Srebrenica, or the ostracized Danish cartoonists, or the archbishop of Canterbury with his supposed concern for transcendent universal human rights.
With all due respect, I also don't believe the world did anything to save Berlin, just as it did nothing to save the Rwandans or the Iraqis under Saddam or will do anything for those of Darfur; it was only the U.S. Air Force that risked war to feed the helpless of Berlin as it saved the Muslims of the Balkans. And I don't think we have much to do in America with creating a world in which famine spreads and terrible storms devastate our lands. Bad, often evil, autocratic governments abroad cause hunger, often despite rich natural landscapes; and nature, in tragic fashion, not the carbon we send into atmosphere, causes terrible storms, just as it has and will for millennia.
Perhaps conflict-resolution theory posits there are no villains, only misunderstandings; but I think military history suggests that culpability exists and is not merely hopelessly relative or just in the eye of the beholder. So despite Obamas soaring moral rhetoric, I am troubled by his historical revisionism that, The two superpowers that faced each other across the wall of this city came too close too often to destroying all we have built and all that we love.
I would beg to differ again, and suggest instead that a mass-murdering Soviet tyranny came close to destroying the European continent (as it had, in fact, wiped out millions of its own people) and much beyond as well and was checked only by an often lone and caricatured US superpower and its nuclear deterrence. When the Soviet Union collapsed, there was no danger to the world from American nuclear weapons destroying all we have built while the inverse would not have been true, had nuclear and totalitarian communism prevailed. We sleep too lightly tonight not because democratic Israel has obtained nuclear weapons, but because a frightening Iran just might.
When Obama shouts,
Will we reject torture and stand for the rule of law? Will we welcome immigrants from different lands, and shun discrimination against those who don't look like us or worship like we do, and keep the promise of equality and opportunity for all of our people?
it is the world, not the U.S., that needs to listen most. In this regard I would have preferred Sen. Obama of mixed ancestry to have begun with In the recent tradition of African-American Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, rather than the less factual, I don't look like the Americans who've previously spoken in this great city.
I want also to shout back that the United States does stand for the rule of law, as even the killers of Guantanamo realize with their present redress of grievances, access to complex jurisprudence, and humane treatment all in a measure beyond what such terrorists would receive anywhere else. It is the United States that takes in more immigrants than does any country in the world, and thus is the prime destination of those who flee the miseries of this often wretched globe.
American immigration policies are humane, not only in easy comparison to the savagery shown the other in Africa or the Middle East, but fair and compassionate in comparison to what we see presently accorded aliens in Mexico, France, and, yes, Germany. Again, in all this fuzziness this sermonizing in condescending fashion reminiscent at times of the Pennsylvania remonstration there is the whiff of American culpability, but certainly not much of a nod to American exceptionalism. Politicians characteristically say to applauding audiences abroad what they wish to hear. True statesmen often do not.
In terms of foreign affairs, I think Americans will finally come to vote for a candidate, who with goodwill, a lot of humility, and a little grace, can persuade the world that universal moral progress, freedom, and material prosperity best advance under the aegis of free markets, constitutional government, and individual freedom, rather than for someone who seems to think, in naïve fashion, that these are necessarily shared and natural human practices, or are presently in force outside the West or will arise due to dialogue or international good intentions.

Let me know if you want in or out.

From Wiki: "Jumping the shark is a colloquialism used by U.S. TV critics and fans to denote the point in a TV or movie series at which the characters or plot veer into a ridiculous, out-of-the-ordinary storyline. Shows that have "jumped the shark" are typically deemed to have passed their peak, since they have undergone too many changes to retain their original appeal, and after this point critical fans often sense a noticeable decline in the show's quality."
"The term is an allusion to a scene in a 1977 episode of the TV series Happy Days when the popular character Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli literally jumps over a shark while water skiing. The scene was considered so preposterous that many believed it to be an attempt at reviving the declining ratings of the flagging show. Ironically, not only was Happy Days reflecting the superstardom of real-life shark-jumper Evel Knievel in the episode, but the series was wildly successful in 1977."

VDH does it again.
The Time UK is all over Obama’s arrogance. Seems they don’t appreciate it much.
“He is not getting any bounce from his college-backpack-hostel tour of Europe, but actually is in a near free-fall. A decline in Barry’s polls, and an “awakening” of the electorate to his false-god image is a real “change I can believe in”. “
I hope you guys are right in predicting the downfall. I am not sure. Propaganda works. And the Left-stream media is working overtime producing the agitprop. “Pravda” would be proud.

Because the freedom-loving nation behind this flag dared to fight

And defeated the evil enslavers using this one.
Did his handlers forget to tell him that Europeans don't vote in American elections?
A lot of people in the UK have posted that Obama reminds them of a Robert Mugabe mixed with Blair.

"On May 1st, May Day [1969], the day of the gigantic Free Huey rally, two of Alioto's top executioners vamped on the brothers from the Brown Community who were attending to their own affairs. These brothers, who are endowed with the revolutionary spirit of the Black Panther Party defended themselves from the racist pig gestapo.
Pig Joseph Brodnik received his just reward with a big hole in the chest. Pig Paul McGoran got his in the mouth which was not quite enough to off him.
The revolutionary brothers escaped the huge swarm of pigs with dogs, mace, tanks and helicopters, proving once again that "the spirit of the people is greater than the man's technology."
To these brothers the revolutionary people of racist America want to say, by your revolutionary deed you are heroes, and that you are always welcome to our camp."

My Vote's for Obama (if I could vote) ...by Michael Moore
Friends,
I don't get to vote for President this primary season. I live in Michigan. The party leaders (both here and in D.C.) couldn't get their act together, and thus our votes will not be counted.
So, if you live in Pennsylvania, can you do me a favor? Will you please cast my vote -- and yours -- on Tuesday for Senator Barack Obama?

Michael Moore (quote), from his website, April 14, 2004...

"The Iraqis who have risen up against the occupation are not 'insurgents' or 'terrorists' or 'The Enemy.' They are the REVOLUTION, the Minutemen, and their numbers will grow -- and they will win. Get it, Mr. Bush?"

The Communist Party USA (CPUSA):
"We are a party of unity in action. We are an integral part of every struggle and movement for change to eliminate poverty and joblessness, against racism and for full equality. We are participants, initiators and leaders of every movement to make life better now and much better in a socialist future." Yeah, so they supported an oppressive dictator, like the Repubs and Democrats haven't? The CP is still around, has apologized for that whole Stalin thing, and has a quickly growing youth section.

I wanted to make an art piece of Barack Obama because I thought an iconic portrait of him could symbolize and amplify the importance of his mission. I believe Obama will guide this country to a future where everyone can thrive and I should support him vigorously for the sake of my two young daughters. I have made art opposing the Iraq war for several years, and making art of Obama, who opposed the war from the start, is like making art for peace. I know I have an audience of young art fans and Im delighted if I can encourage them to see the merits of Barack Obama.

See? It's all about "peace, love, togetherness" and "change".
Here are some of Fairey's other masterpieces. No joke. Most of his works are along these same lines. Check the link.
From a 'Thank you' letter from Barack Obama to Shepard Fairey:
"Dear Shepard, I would like to thank you for using your talent in support of my campaign. The political messages involved in your work have encouraged Americans to believe they can help change the status quo. Your images have a profound effect on people, whether seen in a gallery or on a stop sign.'"

He really wanted a JFK moment, but he does not speak German. So no “Ich bin ein Berliner” for him.
Obama should have used his speech there at the Victory Monument to advocate a few of his domestic policy positions as well. One that might be well received by the German people would be his proposal for the creation of a civilian national security force that would be as well equipped and funded as the military forces. He could explain that since the government is funding the force it is really a free service from the government. And he could say it in German as “Arbeit macht Frei”.
He and his campaign staff would have utterly no clue whatsoever as to why a riot immediately ensued.
I know what you’re trying to say, but Thomas Sowell puts it together very succinctly. I think his article needs to be posted over and over again.

I said yesterday this is Obamie's jump the shark moment on here. Two things that stand out about that are:
1. He COULD sink himself, as he appears to be doing, which could give us Hillary as the nominee.
2. The Republicans running as weak of a candidate as possible still gives ANY Dem a chance.
I had thought as late as yesterday that Obamie didn't have a chance, but watching McCain on the boob tube is a painful experience. He comes off as a dim-witted old coot who speaks in a fake, soft voice.

November 22, 1970 -- During a fund-raising tour for GI deserters, Vietnam Veterans Against the War and the Black Panthers, Jane Fonda is quoted in the Detroit Free Press as telling a University of Michigan audience:

Whether the transition is peaceful depends on the way our present governmental leaders react. We must commit our lives to this transition ...... We should be very proud of our new breed of soldier. I'm not convinced that Europeans have good intentions at all.
McCain may just be the luckiest old coot to be POTUS...
You won’t hear me predicting his ‘downfall’.
There are too many ‘rabid’ supporters that are doing their level best to convince less informed voters that we ‘criticize’ because we are ‘nazis or racists’.
The ‘progressives’ are very good at propaganda.
We are very good in disecting propaganda. Probably because we’ve been there done that. Maybe it’s just inevitable that the ‘pendulum swing’ to the left this time. It’s our job that when it does, it does not do damage.

Barack’s boilerplate is the same as dem politicians who keep getting reelected in our major cities where many lives are marginal and hopeless, yet the voters keep “believing” the promises, and the politicians keep excusing disastrous results of their policies.
“...or on a stop sign.” Interesting that Oh!bama sees no problem with defacing safety equipment; seems to implicitly encourage it.
Maybe they do! After all BO’s history is with ACORN,an organization notorious for registering illegal voters.
Naah, I doubt most people think that about McCain. They may have problems with some of his moronic/liberal positions, but they see him as comparatively sober and wise on vital matters such as national security.
In a simple post, when you are not planning to post pictures, etc., FReerepublic site is smart enough to automatically create a link for you when you copy and paste an Internet address.
Words like "progressive", when describing the leftist ideology, should always be in quotes, because there is absolutely nothing "progressive" about that tried and failed ideology. I do the same when writing about the "anti-war" movement, since the people leading the movement are anything but anti-war. They are pro-communist, anti-capitalist. We have:
United for Peace and Justice: national coordinater is Leslie Cagan. Cagan is a longtime supporter of communist causes and a devoted admirer of Fidel Castro. She is also a founder of the org, Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism. The CCDS is an old offshoot of Communist Party USA. The cochair of United for Peace and Justice is Judith LeBlanc. LeBlanc is vice-chair of Communist Party USA.
A.N.S.W.E.R. of course was founded by leaders of the (Stalinist) Workers World Party. When they were outed as a communist front some years ago, WWP started up a new "peace" group called Troops Out Now. In fact, WWP has just recently organized a new collection of misfits to protest the possibility of war with Iran. They are planning a major nationwide protest on Saturday, August 2, 2008. Gathering of Eagles, I believe, will be there to counter them. For more on this, please see my FR home page.
Another large and widely popular "anti-war" organization is World Can't Wait--Drive Out the Bush Regime. WCW a front for the Revolutionary Communist Party. There's information on them as well on my FR hime page.

The guy is in bed with groups and individuals who want to overthrow our government and turn the United States into a communist dictatorship. Screw the stickers on stop signs! Fortunately (for them) they may not have to restort to such extreme and risky measures, because over half the country seems to be 'ok' with electing one of these SOBs president! (foolishly assuming most of them have the slightest understanding of what they're doing -see "useful idiot")

I saw a Ramirez cartoon with Barry’s take on JFK, “Ich Bin ein Beginner.”
I’ve seen Texas governor Rick Perry recently on TV. Very impressive and unabashedly pro-business, pro-development, energy independence, with the same “nukelar” pronunciation. I wonder if Texan freeprers have a high opinion about him?
