Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain is likely to announce his running mate before the media spotlight shifts to the Olympic Games in China next month.
The Olympics begin on August 8, and McCain aides told The Washington Post the campaign is concerned that events in China either athletic accomplishments or human rights protests could divert attention from McCains vice presidential announcement if it doesnt come before the Games begin.
Traditionally, the running mate announcement is made in the days leading up to the GOP convention. But this year, the Democratic convention begins the day after the Olympics end, and the Republican convention begins just four days after the Democratic gathering ends. Republican insiders say its unlikely that McCain would announce his pick the day after Obama gives his convention speech, The Post reports.
Hence the pressure to disclose McCains vice presidential choice before the Olympics begin.
McCain is now in a position to make the decision on short notice if he wanted to, Charles R. Black Jr., a top McCain political adviser, told The Post.

Be still my heart. ;)
Why would McCain announce before Obama? I don’t think that’s a good idea.
He was rumored to do it this week.
Read the article- it explains why the timing might be best- Olympics, DNC convention etc.
So that he could make a “bold move” (for example, Gov. Palin of Alaska) and thereby get ahead of whatever pick Obama (or Hillary!) decides to make in Denver?
It’s.......HILLARY!!!!
Unless his vp announcement is Obama, this is not newsworthy.....
This is an interesting angle that hadn’t occurred to me before. The most important period in the campaign is going to be during the Olympics, and Romney’s Olympics experience gives him an advantage in holding people’s attention at a time when many people are very focused on the Olympics. And the political issues surrounding the Olympics being held in China provide a lot of very legitimate subject matter for a VP candidate to keep bringing up the Olympics.
Must be a dud if he does it on a Friday afternoon.
I read the article but I still don’t think it’s good to let the dems know who our veep is 1st. Even if he picks Palin, Obama might be forced to pick Hillary and imho that ticket will be hard to beat.
Alot of Hillary supporters might come back to the party and vote Obama.
Only in the 2008 election do I not consider this a joke. This truly is the year when anything is possible.
Romney would certainly be able to address almost any Olympic angle that pops up. He would be the obvious go to guy for the press. This is just one of many reasons that I am hoping Mitt gets the nod.
I woulde also like to be surprised by a Newt Gingrich selection. I don't know enough about Palin but that could be an interesting choice and a way to stay focused on gas prices.
Its.......HILLARY!!!!
For Secretary of State: General John Pershing./Just Asking - seoul62.......
What better time than right before the Olympics? Romney's leadership and business acumen "saved" the Olympics from economic meltdown. This image will help him in public perception in an extremely positive way. The Governor comes off as Mr. Clean next to Mr. Oily.
Obama's selection of a Veep will only be a letdown given the bench he has to call on. First impressions are lasting, so they say.....I hope Mitt is the first impression for Veep.....and I can't wait for him to roll up his sleeves and start throwing some javelins!

Then you should have quit while you were ahead, LOL.

Wow! Very interesting indeed! McCain's VP pick would get constant media highlighting/attention...
I’m crossing my fingers for Mitt!
McCain should stall this until the National Convention after Obama announces their choice. Am posting an interesting quiz about Democrats and oil in my website;
http://www.theusmat.com/ FR’s may wish to participate in.
I have posted it before, but if McCain knows who it is for sure...in other words...if he isn’t rushing his pick to do it, this would be a good idea for one reason.
While Obama is globe trotting and sucking up all the NATIONAL news, McCain and the VP candidate can criss cross the battleground states and hit LOCAL news and radio, townhalls, whatever. It may not seem like it, but 5 weeks covering twice as much ground (literally) is a big deal IMO.
This race is unique, and it calls for a unique campaign.
I am not sold on Romney, but if it IS him, just announce it and go for it. There is no point in waiting.
Goodness, how I would LOVE that!
Obama will probably pick the Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. All Hillary supporters will be content and if McCain picks Palin she’ll add nothing and he will spend the rest of the race explaining how someone less experienced than Obama is qualified to be his number 2.

This woman could take Hussein out!
How is a governor less experienced than a man who hasn’t spent a year in the Senate before starting his campaign to be President?
I hope the pick is Santorum, but probably won’t be. I think the moment McCain sets foot on an oil rig this election is will turn in his favor. In fact I wouldn’t mind McCain and his running mate kicking off the RNC convention by lifting off from an oil rig in the gulf and flying into Minn-St.Paul.

Palin is 42, has been governor for 7 months and if she was a man her name would be nowhere near anybody’s vp list.
I do not disagree. I like to hold my fire until I see the whites of their eyes.
I took a quick look at your website. It has some interesting information and I will look in more detail later. It could use a little pimping...aesthetics do matter. Unfortunate, but true.
I was just trying to model open-mindedness for some of the slow learners.
Which is still 7 months more executive (leadership) experience than Obama.
I agree. That is the point Geraldine Ferraro correctly made about Obama's race. Unfortunately this seems to be where we are as a country; style over substance. That said, I would rather have an inexperienced conservative on the ticket than some old hack like Tom Ridge.
The Governor is 44, and has been in office since December, 2006.
If the choice is Romney I agree that the announcement should coincide with the opening of the Olympics. If it is anyone else he should do it after the Denver Convention.
I totally agree with you Mainerforglobalwarming.
I have been wrong, so very wrong this campaign season. Nothing I’ve predicted has panned out. But if I keep making enough predictions eventually one will come true. So let’s keep our fingers crossed that McCain picks a real conservative to be his running mate.
You are right. Hopefully she’ll finish her term.
He has a Senate run written all over him.
Petraeus would be just fine as VP or as Pres. He has as much experience as Eisenhower and Eisenhower was actually a pretty good pres. And he certainly has more executive experience than The Great One (that isn’t saying much I know but running an Army is no small matter). But it won’t happen.
You state he is looking at a senate run. Has he said something about this? This is the first I have heard. What state would that be in?
He did try. A long time ago. Ran for the senate and lost big.
Thank You ...This site has been around since 2002 I decided to keep it simple, minus fancy backgrounds and graphics becausse of download time and its a one man operation. Also, I don’t have the time nor the computer, and expertiese to monitor inane imput.I tried using an email promotional campaign in 04 and was accused of “spamming” because the “Chinaman” I used did not use the proper list.
