Democrat Bobby Bright leads Republican Jay Love in the race for the 2nd congressional district seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Terry Everett, R-Rehobeth, according to a poll released Tuesday by the Capital Survey Research Center. Bright, the mayor of Montgomery, was the choice of 47.1 percent of the district voters surveyed. Love, a state representative from Montgomery, was the choice of 37.4 percent. Another 15.5 percent of voters surveyed said they didn't know or didn't reply when asked for whom they would vote in the congressional race.

Huntsville insurance executive Wayne Parker and Huntsville attorney Cheryl Baswell Guthrie will be in a runoff for the Republican nomination for the 5th Congressional District seat. Parker nearly won without a runoff but didn't quite reach 50 percent of the GOP primary vote Tuesday. The runoff is July 15. State Sen. Parker Griffith of Huntsville won the Democratic Party primary Tuesday. The winner of the 2nd District race will replace veteran Democratic U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer, who has represented the district since 1991. Parker has previously run twice against Cramer.

State Sen. Tom Butler, D-Madison, announced today he will not be a candidate for the Congressional seat being vacated by Bud Cramer. Butler, who is serving his seventh term in the Alabama Legislature (fourth in the Senate), was considering running as a Republican for the north Alabama congressional seat. "After much prayer and consideration, I have decided not to run. I appreciate the support of many across the district and the state who encouraged me to seek the office, but at this time being with my family and finishing the job I stated in the State Senate is my priority,"...

Madison County Commissioner Mo Brooks says he won't run for the 5th Congressional District seat being vacated by Bud Cramer. Brooks, who's a Huntsville lawyer, said Thursday he has been encouraged by many voters to qualify as a Republican for Congress. But he said he has many trials coming up and can't abandon his clients during their time of need. Brooks said he also has family commitments that take priority. Brooks ran for lieutenant governor in 2006 and finished third in the Republican primary.

The reason for my apology was that throughout this primary season we have been hearing about the record turnout of voters participating in Democrat caucuses and primaries. I bought the lie. The truth is that, except for Iowa and New Hampshire, there has not been any sort of record turnout for the Democrats.
