TRACY— A 19-year-old man told police that he was shot early Sunday while trying to steal pumpkins from a field in rural Tracy, San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputies said. The man told deputies that he was at a pumpkin patch in the 16800 block of South Tracy Boulevard with two other people when they entered the field about 1 a.m. to steal pumpkins, Deputy Les Garcia said. They apparently heard gunshots, and all three returned to their car, a black Lincoln Navigator. As they were driving away, four shots were fired at the vehicle, striking the 19-year-old in the back,...

I am not sure where Chuck Baur (community comment, Oct. 6) gets his information on Barack Obama being the "candidate of outdoorsmen" and how Obama supports our Second Amendment rights. He is no friend of the Second Amendment. The man talks a good show, but his past anti-gun actions betray him. Let's look at the facts of Obama and his stance on guns: FACT: Before running for president, Obama expressed support for banning many types of firearms. On a 1996 questionnaire, Obama answered "yes" to a question about his support for legislation to "ban the manufacture, sale and possession of...

Ok for states & cities to determine local gun laws Q: Is the D.C. law prohibiting ownership of handguns consistent with an individual's right to bear arms?A: As a general principle, I believe that the Constitution confers an individual right to bear arms. But just because you have an individual right does not mean that the state or local government can't constrain the exercise of that right, in the same way that we have a right to private property but local governments can establish zoning ordinances that determine how you can use it. Q: But do you still favor...

Associated Press WASHINGTON - Barack Obama and Joe Biden won the endorsement Monday of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The group is named after Jim Brady, the press secretary to former President Reagan, who was gravely wounded by a gunman who tried to assassinate Reagan in 1981. Paul Helmke, the organization's president, said Obama and Biden would strengthen background checks on gun purchasers, get assault weapons off the streets and give law enforcement more tools to stop illegal gun trafficking. "The Obama-Biden ticket will work with law enforcement, gun violence victims and ordinary citizens who want to do...

It isn't every day that gun grabbers can invent a whole new catch phrase to use against our Constitutional rights under the Second Amendment, but the Orlando Sentinel is giving it the old college try just the same. Sentinel staff writer Henry Pierson Curtis extrapolates "an alarming trend" that he is calling "disposable AK-47s" out of the words of a Florida police officer. So, now we have a new worry that the gun grabbers can use to scare people into accepting the destruction of our Constitutional rights.

China's weapons laws are among the world's toughest... Still, a gun culture is taking hold. China may be freer from gun crime than many nations, and official statistics show overall crime on a continuous down trend. Yet, these days, reports about gun crimes turn up as often as several times a week even in the tightly controlled state-run media... But the trend is about more than crime. Guns are now fashionable in paintings and movies, while Chinese-language Web sites and glossy magazines cater to gun buffs. And legal shooting clubs in cities let customers fire away at targets for a...

URGENT! Help Keep NRA-PVF Ads on the Air Until Election Day! OUR RIGHTS ARE IN SERIOUS JEOPARDY, BUT VICTORY IS STILL WITHIN REACH! With only a few short weeks left, we are facing what could be, if we do not act now, a disaster for our Second Amendment Freedoms! But we have the power to stop it! Tracking polls tell us that if the election were held today, not only would Barack Obama become the most anti-gun politician ever elected President of the United States, gun owners would be facing losses of between 20-30 pro-gun votes in the U.S. House...

From Rifles to Grenades 1914 - 1918 Prior to the outbreak of WWI, for 28 years since the introduction of the French 8x51mmR smallbore, high-velocity smokeless cartridge in 1886, the European powers had been engaged in an arms race to develop the next generation of small arms with which to equip their ever expanding armies. The American Civil War had proved the worth of the rifled barrel as well as the repeater. Stubborn ordnance types had argued for years against the introduction of repeating firearms based on the concern the average soldier would fire off all of his ammunition...

RICHMOND, VA - Gov. Sarah Palin added a line attacking her opponent for opposing gun rights Monday, while crooner Hank Williams, Jr., changed the lines of his song to fit the political event. "We believe in the forward movement of freedom, not the constant expansion of government," Palin told a crowd at the Richmond International Speedway Monday. "And though Barack Obama disagrees, that freedom includes ... the rights and liberties under the Second Amendment." Palin spoke to a crowd of about 20,000 people, according to the Associated Press. A large part of the crowd in the back could not hear...

Yet another heavy sniper rifle is generating a lot of buzz. This one is the CheyTac LRRS (Long Range Rifle System). It looks like a .50 caliber (12.7mm) rifle, but is actually .408 (10.3mm). The .408 round resembles a scaled down .50 caliber, and this bullet is mainly for anti-personnel use (rather than the oft-quoted, but little used, "anti-material" use of the .50 caliber sniper rifles.) The .408 was developed in 2001, and is actually based on the older . 505 Gibbs and the .400 Taylor Magnum elephant guns. The .408 bullet is a new streamlined design that leaves it...

Barack Obama says Republicans "are going to try to make you afraid of me." Well, it's hard to imagine how the GOP could conjure up a more fearsome specter of an Obama presidency than the one created by the tactics of his own campaign. Responding to those who dare commit blasphemy against The One, Obama's campaign has unleashed lawsuits and urged prosecution by no less than the Justice Department, enlisted elected officials to threaten and intimidate his foes, and deployed its vast internet e-mail list to silence bloggers and radio talk shows. In Missouri, Obama allies, from a U.S. Senator...

Andrew Bloom bought his first gun when he was a 21-year-old working security and thought a 9mm might help his career. Now he's a bail bond enforcer who tracks down fugitives and owns a small security surveillance business in Avon that sells nanny-cams to Farmington Valley families. He doesn't have time to hunt deer, the way he did as a teen. These days, Bloom says, he hunts people. His right to bear arms is a "pretty strong reason" why a McCain-Palin sign is staked into his front lawn, he says. In a Democratic Obama administration, Bloom fears that the Second...

The National Rifle Association is airing ads in Fargo-Moorhead attacking Barack Obama’s positions on gun control at the same time John McCain’s campaign is touting his support for the right to bear arms. A theme of the NRA’s ads is to accuse Obama, who has proclaimed his support for the constitutional right to bear arms, of votes or statements that contradict his stated broad support for gun ownership. Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA’s director of public affairs, said Wednesday the ads are aimed at showing that Obama’s record is one of “lip service” for gun rights that is hollow in light...

I am compelled to correct notions espoused by Chuck Bauer's Community comment Monday claiming Barack Obama will protect gun rights. Bauer writes, "Barack Obama will preserve our right to bear arms for hunting, sport shooting and home defense and respect our tradition of gun ownership." Bauer is representative of so many gun owners in this country in the fact that they haven't the slightest idea of the intent of the Second Amendment and the purpose for which George Mason and Patrick Henry insisted that it be included in the Bill of Rights. This country had just defeated the British Army...

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama talked about gun control and the Second Amendment during a radio interview in Philadelphia on Friday morning. Illinois Senator Barack Obama was a guest on KYW's sister station, WPHT-AM 1210. Obama told talk show host Michael Smerconish he's a firm believer in the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms -- but admits there must be some limits: "I do believe in some gun safety measures -- so, for example, with all the shootings in Philadelphia, most recently police officers, I want to make sure that we can trace back guns and bullets that...

13 year old Jack Theisen had to make a quick decision when two would-be robbers were in the process of coming through an unlocked, basement door, and Theisen was home alone. Theisen grabbed his Red Ryder model BB gun and shot the first invader in the shoulder, scaring off both men. "He's resilient," Jack Theisen's father, Mike Theisen told 27 News. Mike Theisen said his son, an eighth grade student at St. James Catholic School, has taken a hunter safety course and is proficient and safe with guns. Theisen said his son spotted the two men as they cased the...

An animal-rights activist from Vernon has been charged with obstruction and resisting arrest when she interfered with state wildlife biologists who were trying to tranquilize a black bear to change a satellite-radio collar used to track the bear, police said today. Susan Kehoe, 58, was charged Wednesday at 4:16 p.m. when she interfered and prevented a biologist from firing a tranquilizer dart at the bear, police said in a press release. They did not specifically say how Kehoe interfered, and police and state officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Reached by telephone, Kehoe also declined to comment.

(CNN) – Hockey Moms might be the hot political demographic of the moment, but NASACAR Dads haven't been forgotten. The McCain campaign is moving Sarah Palin's Monday appearance from the Arthur Ashe Center in downtown Richmond, Virginia — capacity 6,000 — to a much larger outdoor venue: the Richmond International Raceway, which hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races yearly and can accommodate over 100,000 people. The campaign doesn't expect to fill all those seats, but McCain's mid-Atlantic regional director Trey Walker said the demand for Palin tickets has nearly quadrupled the capacity of the original event site, the Arthur...

http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/03/30/selecting-a-gun-for-home-defense/ Selecting a Gun for Home Defense Published by the LearnAboutGuns.com Many people purchase their first gun for home defense, and the question of which type of gun to pick is a common one. The three basic choices are a handgun, shotgun, or rifle. Of the three, I would recommend a shotgun for most situations, with handguns being recommended for people who lack the physical ability to handle a shotgun. My recommendation for the “ideal” home defense shotgun, and the pros and cons of each of these firearm types, in the order which I recommend them, are discussed below. My...

There's not many people who could have done that.” Leming said his father's shot...

On the Second Amendment, Don’t Believe Obama! On the campaign trail, Senator Obama hides behind carefully chosen words and vague statements of support for sportsmen and gun rights to sidestep and camouflage the truth. But even he can’t hide from the truth forever… his voting record, political associations, and long standing positions make it clear that, if elected, Barack Obama would be the most anti-gun president in American history. The facts speak for themselves. This election day, vote to defend freedom…because if Obama wins, you lose.

U.S. District Court Judge Carl Barbier hasn't signed the agreement yet, and no monetary award is in the settlement. The city agreed to give back the guns to their rightful owners via its Web...

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. It seems that every election cycle since the media coined ‘assault weapon ban’ was first enacted has been ‘the most important election in the history of mankind’ according to us second amendment proponents. Rhetoric simply can’t be kept up so high before people become numb to it. The Supreme Court just declared the second amendment to be applicable to individuals, not states, so you may be asking yourself, “why are these guys still...

A lot of people don’t like Detective Antoine Lane. Most of them are fellow cops. Lane is a firearms expert from Texas. He travels the country teaching police his technique. His specialized classes are consistently overbooked. And it’s these popular seminars that have quietly, privately, earned Lane the disdain of a certain circle of police. Watching him teach at Metro’s firing range Wednesday, in a portable trailer filled to capacity, it’s easy to see why. The subject matter is simple firearm skills, textbook stuff. The handouts are basic black and white photocopies. The TV at the front of the room...

Over at the L.A. Times' The Dish Rag blog, Elizabeth Snead wonders how Newsweek got Governor Sarah Palin to pose "with a rifle" for the cover of its next issue? I suppose Snead wasn't really too worried about the photo, but she did just prove that she has no idea what a "rifle" is because Palin is holding a...

We endorse John McCain for President of the United States.By the issues, here's why: Economy: McCain fought for the federal bailout package passed last week. He has promised to permanently restructure and downsize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and supported the failed 2005 legislation that may have averted the current crisis. He wants to end the use of taxpayer money for private interests, and has called for greater transparency and disclosure in mortgage lending and banking. He also has promised to do everything possible to keep credit-worthy homeowners in their homes, including (at the Tuesday debate) using $300 billion of...

How did Newsweek convince Gov. Sarah Palin to pose with a rifle for its cover? Simple. It didn't. Instead, it used an archive (fancy speak for old) stock photo of her taken back in June 2002 and used it for the cover without her knowledge. However, to the magazine's credit, it did not try to hide the fact that it's a stock photo, even printing circa 2002 on the cover and again referencing the date in editor Jon Meacham's letter entitled "The Palin Problem." So that makes it OK. Right? Or maybe not? What do you think? Hey, is that...
