A New York Times blogger discovers the news is not good for John McCain in Colorado Springs, where a lifelong Republican on the city council says she is abandoning her partys nominee to vote for Barack Obama this year. Further endangering McCains prospects in Colorados largest Republican stronghold, the pastor who replaced former GOP heavyweight Ted Haggard leading one of the citys largest mega-churches is staying on the sidelines, urging his flock to vote for any political party. Seattle-based Timothy Egan visited Colorado Springs, dubbed the Vatican of evangelical political power, after the second presidential debate and comes to one...

At one point the lions were within about 10 feet of their patio door looking right into their dinning room... They were meandering around the house, just lollygagging, not in a hurry at all, Jan explained. They just kind of hung out in the yard for a while. In July 2007, a colt was attacked by a mountain lion near Silt but later recovered from its injuries. Several other incidents involving mountain lions have occurred in the area, according to Hampton, but theres definitely been an increase this year. What frightened Jan about the lions near her home was that...

Two high-profile Colorado Republicans took aim at Barack Obama and his running mate Joe Biden today, calling the Democrats too liberal for Colorado and a threat to the state's energy needs. Seizing on a recent comment Biden made in Ohio that he and Obama don't support "clean coal" plants in the U.S., former Gov. Bill Owens and Scott McInnis, a former member of Congress, said the Democratic ticket owed an "explanation" to voters about where the state's energy is going to come from. "They are coming to a state where 73 percent of the energy needs are met by coal,"...

There has been a pretty vicious fight in Colorado over several Amendments that will appear on the ballots aimed at putting a collar on rampant union violations of worker's rights this year. The unions have imported all sorts of outside groups and money to defeat these worker freedom Amendments. Here is a page from the latest anti-worker rights the unions have sent out. How The West Was Won The rapid and unexpected decline of the Sunni insurgency in Iraq was officially recognized this week, when Maj. Gen. John Kelly, commanding the Marine Expeditionary Force, turned operational control of Anbar Province over to the Iraqi army and police. Anbar, a vast expanse of desert the size of North Carolina, had been the stronghold of the Sunni insurgency. For years, foreign fighters loyal to al-Qaida had sneaked across Iraq's northwestern border with Syria, into Anbar and down a "rat line" of safe houses in Haditha, Ramadi and Hit. From Fallujah, the arch terrorist Zarqawi...

DENVER This year's Colorado ballot is loaded with high-profile initiatives on hot-button issues, the kind that tend to stir passions, mobilize voters and swing elections. It's even possible that the ballot - which includes measures on abortion, labor unions, education and affirmative action - could determine the outcome of the presidential contest in Colorado. But not probable, say political analysts.

Well...I played hookie this morning and went to the Sarah Palin Rally this morning at the Westernaires Arena in Golden, Colorado. It was originally to be a pancake breakfast meeting, but due to the overwhelming demand the campaign ran out of tickets in the span of eight hours so the pancakes were tossed out. I had called ahead and I had tickets available at the "will call" booth at the arena. I left the house in Thornton at 5 AM and parked at the Colorado Mills Mall parking lot at 5:30. I then walked about a mile to the Arena....

Barack Obama is holding onto a one point lead in Colorado, down from four in PPP's previous two polls of the state. Colorado continues a trend PPP has found in several battleground states this week of John McCain gaining support from white voters since the two party conventions. Where he led by just two points with that demographic in August, it is now six. Obama is winning overall in the state because of his overwhelming support from the state's growing Hispanic electorate, with which he has a 58-34 advantage. The traditionally red states of Virginia and Colorado are toss ups...

A year ago, Coors Brewing - before its new joint venture with Miller Brewing - unveiled the creation of tiny AC Golden Brewing Co. The upstart brewery would operate as a stand- alone brewer, with its own budget. The aim: Brew small-batch, handcrafted beers that would mimic the success of the parent company's popular Blue Moon Belgian White, a craft-style wheat ale. Fast-forward one year. The clock was nearing 7 on a recent Wednesday morning at the MillerCoors brewery here. Two brewers were preparing to make the fourth batch - roughly 30 barrels - of AC Golden's debut brew: Herman...

So now we know the Democratic ticket: Obama-Biden. We have been promised John McCain's running mate on Friday the 29th. With Joe Biden as the matchup, who among the plausible candidates should McCain take? And who is helped/hurt by the Biden pick? Personally, I think I would disregard at least some of my own prior checklist and take Eric Cantor. Cantor's young (but not too young), smart, conservative, telegenic, and from an important state that is a must-win for McCain (although Virginia seems less important with the news that Obama has suspended his TV ad campaign there, and there's less...

Water experts of all stripes were left questioning the prudence of Republican presidential candidate and Arizona Sen. John McCain after he told a newspaper the critical 1922 water compact between seven Western states should be revisited. I dont think theres any doubt the major, major issue is water and can be as important as oil. So the compact that is in effect, obviously, needs to be renegotiated over time amongst the interested parties, McCain told The Pueblo Chieftain. I think that theres a movement amongst the governors to try, if not, quote, renegotiate, certainly adjust to the new realities of...

A political battle for the ages may become a battle of the ages. Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are neck-and-neck in Colorado, solidifying the state as a key, swing area that will be pivotal in deciding who becomes the next president of the U.S., according to a Rocky Mountain News/CBS4 News poll released Friday. The race for Colorados Electoral College votes is about as close as it can be on the eve of the Democratic National Convention in Denver. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Colorado voters shows John McCain attracting 47% of the vote while Barack Obama earns 45%. When leaners are included, its McCain by a single percentage point, 49% to 48%. While McCains advantage is statistically insignificant, it is the first time he has been ahead in Colorado in seven monthly polls conducted by Rasmussen Reports this year. Its also the first time that McCain has reached the 47% level...

DENVER (AP) ― Denver voters passed a ballot measure that would give police the authority to seize cars driven by illegal immigrants. It has the makings of international intrigue. Less than two weeks before the Democratic National Convention a man has been found dead in a Denver hotel room with a container of what authorities initially suspect to be the deadly poison cyanide. Adding to the intrigue is that the dead man, Saleman Abdirahman Dirie, 29, appears to be from outside the U.S. No passport was found on Dirie, who is believed to have entered the country from Canada. A large container of a white powdery substance was found in the man's room on the fourth floor of the Burnsley Hotel at...

Democrats are pretty eager to repeal (some) of the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts. But what about the 2008 tax cut? By that, I mean the big drop in oil prices we are seeing right now. I think the president's lifting of the executive order banning offshore drilling was a key moment in reversing oil-market psychology. Since then, we've had McCain push the drilling issue hard, and even Obama has softened his anti-drill stance. For now, the political momentum is behind cheaper energy.

With just one month to go until the Democratic National Convention in Denver, the city and the Secret Service are preparing for activist crowds estimated to be between 20,000 and 50,000. Authorities are taking every precaution to make sure those looking to disrupt what the Democratic Party expects to be a historic moment dont go too far.
