Roger Kimball muses today on an old WFB line: In the early 1960s, Bill Buckley famously observed that he would rather be governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston phone book than the two thousand faculty members of Harvard University. After my post last weekend re Governor Palin, a number of readers modified the thought along the following: I would rather be governed by the first 500* names in the Wasilla, AK phone book than by the editors of The Harvard Law Review. (*Presumably reduced from 2,000 because, what with all those five-kid households, there probably aren't...

Let me begin with a big caveat: the McCain campaign still faces big structural obstacles. The Republican base is shrunken like a week old tomato on a sunlit window sill. Obama still has a bit of a lead in most recent polls, and despite the fact that his lead has always been narrow, and despite the fact that, on paper, his lead ought to be a lot larger, it is still better to hold a lead than to lose it. Nor did McCain's choice of a much younger running mate make him any younger, and his age remains his most...

John McCain and Sarah Palin have received a rousing welcome in Democratic-leaning Michigan. As they made their post-convention debut they stressed a strong America and the economy. Big crowds cheered the Arizona senator and Alaska governor as they arrived at Freedom Hill Amphitheater in Michigan's Macomb County, the home to a multitude of working-class union members. Republicans hope to win the blue collar vote with conservative positions on cultural and social issues. Senator McCain told the crowd: "These are tough times for many of you, in the state of Michigan, times are tough. Many people here were worried about keeping...

I think the PUMAs are the most objective political presence in this election cycle. Sure, they supported Hillary Clinton, but they were able to break out of party shackles and objectively see that Obama points their party in the wrong direction. One interesting observation is their surprise at how Democratic party leaders allowed Hillary to be maligned while the Republican party stood by Sarah Palin, even in her darkest hour. Some of those attacks against Hillary were harsh and frequently sexist. Such as Obama's comment about Hillary and "periodic" rage. (VIDEO AT LINK) Of course, one can argue that this...

After watching the presidential nomination acceptance speeches, I have a few comments to make. First for Obama. The guy has no clue what he is talking about. He spent almost the entire 45 minutes saying how terrible McCain is and was misinformed on almost every account. And on the rare occasion where he actually talked about himself, he was not able to convince me that any of his ideas are possible without costing me an arm and a leg. At one point he actually said that the republicans want for people born into poverty to pull themselves out of it....

The correct one was about a month ago, then they hit me for a duplicate amount at the end of August. I've made a few phone calls, but still have not received a refund. I suspect this is not an isolated event, but something that may have happened to hundreds or even thousands of donors.

John McCain harkens back to a different era in America. Cue "Mr. Sandman" and let's take a trip back to good ole 1955. A time when America was safe and sound because the White House was occupied by a humble, plain speaking citizen soldier from Kansas. That man was Dwight D. Eisenhower. Ike is back on the scene with a vengance and I'm not talking about the hurricane steaming across the Atlantic. Reform. Prosperity. Peace. Sound familiar? It all began with Hillary Clinton and her eighteen million votes. Democrats said, “thanks, but no thanks,” when they hung Hillary Clinton and her supporters out to dry during the Democratic primary this year. Think about that - Democrats told the entire population of 27 congressional districts that they’re vote doesn’t count. This was a very bold, and ironically, Clintonesque move on the part of Barack Obama and the Democratic Party. In addition to the all important female voters who supported Hillary, the Clinton’s other top two minority groups were victims of Obama’s vice presidential selection process and the Democratic...

If Barack Obama was born on August 14, 1961 - then his mother was likely pregnant sometime in October of 1960. Since Obama's mother was born on November 29th, 1942 that would make her pregnant at 17. Last time I checked... Barack Obama had enormous respect for his maternal grandmother, even though this woman raised a child who got pregnant at age 17.

Barack Obama has inserted himself into the debate as to who has the most experience: he, or Sarah Palin. As the head of the Democrats’ ticket, he should view himself above such a question, and focus only on his credentials to lead. Instead, he has again made the issue of experience the campaign meme, which is a factor he is going to lose time and time again, especially since he is not running against Sarah Palin for president. This is playing out like I envisioned, and opposite to how the punditry on a sordid series of cable news shows predicted....

The Corporate Mainstream Media has just received word that they have ANOTHER gang-rape to attend. In a brilliant attempt to capitalize and steal the spotlight from yet another one of Obamessiah's speeches, Camp McCain has decided to release an ad in battleground states tonight while Obama delivers his speech at the Democratic Convention. Reports out of Politico and DrudgeReport indicate that there may even be an early leak from Camp McCain in order to draw the attention away from Obama's sermon, I mean speech, and shift the focus of attention back to Camp McCain. Individuals close to the campaign state that the running mate choices are and continue to be : "Governor Mitt Romney of...

I made the mistake of watching the whole of Joe Biden's keynote DNC speech at the gym tonight. How underwhelming! Forgiving the inadvertent (and repeated) stumbling and bumbling, the substance of the speech itself was just painfully awkward. First, the theme of the evening was national security. CQ reports that one of the Democrat talking points was "stewardship of the armed forces." In line with this, I'm guessing, Biden threw in minor, trite, awkward mentions of the troops. The first was sandwiched, awkwardly disconnected, between his fawning adoration of Hillary Clinton and before the typical pandering to his home state...

The theme of tonight's Democrat Convention follies will be "Securing America's Future", or in dem language "abandoning your friends and kissing your enemies." In honor of this event, John McCain has released his latest ad called "Tiny", using Barry's own words against him. Here is the original clip, which I really wish they would have used in the ad. Barack also turned around the very next day and called Iran a "grave threat", something I believe should also be in the ad. Those video clips played back to back would not only strike at how naive and, frankly, stupid Barack...

The Democrats kicked off their convention to less than stellar poll results. After "President" Obama announced his VP choice, today polls shifted in favor of McCain. ((Side note / rant: I thought it was hysterical that former Messiah to the people John Kerry kept referring to Obama as PRESIDENT Obama, guess he hasn't been paying attention to public reactions or polls. )) Evidently the ads that were released by the RNC and McCain Camp showing Biden's distrust of Obama's experience regarding his White House Bid have struck a cord with voters... and rightfully so. Granted the Gallup poll showing McCain...

If you missed Hillary's speech tonight, let me summarize it for you: Obama is the Democrat nominee so I will support him, since he is the Democrat and I am a Democrat. She also talked about her campaign and how her candidacy inspired women and little girls. She looked great and her video was great. She just didn't make the case for Obama. She didn't talk about how he is qualified to lead. She said his name plenty of times, but she really didn't talk about him. Tomorrow night Bill Clinton will speak. We all know what he will talk...
