Free Republic Gun Club – Tuesday – RIMFIRES!!!! We all have at least one, and in some cases more than three or four. My better half enjoys a lot of her 22’s when we go to the range and each has it’s own favorite ammo for accuracy. Her latest acquisition, is a J. This is representative of the rifle. We also have the highly popular Ruger 10/22, and I am sure we will hear about that one from some of you.For handgunning and as a...

June 28, 2008, was a defining moment in my life. It was the day I shot and killed a man in the defense of my life and the lives of others. We all have defining moments. They might not be as tragic as taking another man's life, but they are events that change the way we look at things -- or even, perhaps, how we live our lives. Before that muggy Saturday evening in June, I would have said my defining moments were many: graduating from high school; enlisting in the Army; getting married; having children; getting run over by...

Finally in San Antonio, on December 13, 1907, at 9:00 o'clock in the morning, Topps was ready to make good the boast he had made nearly fifteen years earlier. His preparations were painstaking. Like many townies, my prejudices about the Glorious Twelfth were well and truly fully formed. The official start of the shooting season was nothing more than an ancient ritual to massacre thousands of defenceless birds. So it was with some cynicism and not a little trepidation that I agreed to take part in the Glorious Twelfth last Tuesday, the traditional start of the shooting season, on a moor on the Durham/ Northumberland border. (edit) Having missed my first bird and about to hand over my place to the next gun, I looked back at the group. Mums with red-faced...

Police said Timothy Dale Johnson, 50, of Searcy, barged into Bill Gwatney's office on Wednesday and shot him multiple times. Before stray bullets from a gun battle at Sherman Drive and 38th Street ripped through her car, Charlotte Thompson didn't even know what gunfire sounded like. "I'd never heard a gunshot," she said. She was sitting at a red light around 7:00 pm Monday when the fight broke out. "We heard this pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow," Thompson said. "Then Shyann said 'Oh! I'm shot!'" Her 10-year-old great granddaughter was sitting in the back seat, shot in the stomach....

Shooter’s acquittal worries authorities ST. ALBANS CITY –– Matthew Martel is polite and has soft, boy-band looks. He was home-schooled and lives with his genial parents, Bob and Deborah, in a rustic white house with a wraparound porch that overlooks Route 105. Martel does not look like a member of the Franklin County Sportsman’s Club, but he is. He does not come off as someone who would buy a $450 handgun for target practice, but he did. Nor does he strike you as someone who pocketed a loaded handgun for protection four or five times during the last three years,...

AUSSIES who find themselves under threat are more likely to shoot at Muslims, especially if they're in a good mood, a study claims. Researchers at the University of New South Wales have found that Australians perceive Muslim-style headgear as a threat, even if they don't realise they hold any prejudice. The study, published in The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, involved 66 uni students playing a computer game in which different male and female figures appeared on a balcony. Some figures were wearing Muslim-style turbans or hijabs while others were bareheaded. Participants were asked to shoot at the targets carrying...

Not even a week after the Supreme Court decided that gun bans are unconstitutional, a man accused of shooting to death two burglars who were robbing his neighbor's home has been set free despite the viciousness of his act. If you'll remember the story, Joe Horn, a 61-year-old Pasadena, Tex., resident spotted two burglars breaking into his neighbor's home in Nov. 2007. He dialed 911, but despite being warned to stay in his home, he declared that he has a right to use deadly force to defend his neighbor's property and that he was going to confront the robbers. He...
